A few more things: Stanton measures their geo at 25% sag. According to the geo charts, this bike measures 65.5* with a 140mm fork at 25% sag. if my math is correct, that's the equivalent to a 63.75* hta angle at static height. That's a significant difference, and it tells the story of why it felt so planted and why the front end wanders just a tiny bit on tech uphill moves Have you ridden captain ahab before? If so, what did you think of it? Were you able to clean it all? Who else was crazy enough to try it on a hardtail? Ever wonder why the camera is so shaky, even with hypersmooth enabled? BECAUSE IT'S A HARDTAIL ON A HARD TRAIL. :) Things get BUMPY on a hardtail..

If you really start using frame calculators, ATC values and spend a ton of time with the geo on some of their bikes they seem to not be accurate, told them that, they did some corrections after, but I don't know...

@@Jthe5th it's interesting, I'm finding that with almost every frame out there. It's inaccurate across the board and it's tough to compare two bikes.

So the HA is on par with the Kona Honzo ESD? How would you compare both bikes? Love your work!

@@thescandiflick If it's 140mm travel, then 35mm would be sagged at 25%, so 551mm - 35mm = 516mm. So the 516mm makes sense and would imply the 2018 and 2022 Pike's are the same length. I would expect to get very different numbers with the unsagged/551mm length

The seat angle is quite slack as well, especially if those are sagged figures, which won't help with climbing.

Great riding on such technical trails. Fair play! Very good to hear your review and even better to hear how positive about it you were. Even more excited about getting my one now. Interesting to hear your comments on fork length. I was toying with 150mm, the same length as on my Orange Crush, but after hearing your comments I might go with 140mm instead I think.

This review pretty much reflects my thoughts on my new Stanton Switchback. I was comfortable on it right out of the gate, 140mm felt spot on, it feels light to ride yet solid, it’s quiet and super playful. I also put the TRP Slate 4’s on it and love everything about them except for the long lever.

I had my first ride on my Switch9er today. I am blown away by the feel of this frame. The difference between my aluminium frame and the steel frame is incredible when it comes to compliance and comfort. Can’t wait to get to ride it more and to see what it can do.

Great review! I just built up a Chromag Wideangle mullet style with a 140 lyrik. It's like riding a bmx trail bike. I'm very impressed with the ride feel and nimbleness. Instantly comfortable and hitting and bonus features right off the bat. Hopefully you can check out some Chromags soon. The recent hardtails I've owned: Kona Honzo CR DL, Pipedream Moxie, Nimble 9, DB Mason, Redline Monocog.

Awesome review! I debated a long time between this bike and the Nimble 9. I ended up choosing the Switch9er because I wanted something a little slacker and with less travel, but I really worried about giving up the playfulness and ability to steer from the handle bars, that I knew the N9 would have. This review makes me feel pretty good about my choice. Can't wait to finally get my frame.

If you're riding trails like Ahab, you definitely made the right decision. Both bikes are fantastic. This swich9er is more compliant than the N9, and it handles rowdy terrain better. The N9 is more fun on flatter intermediate trails.

When I wrote to Ragley they said they were very much aware of you but wouldn't give any details beyond that. Never ridden a Stanton but they're built 8 miles down the road from my house. So cool to see one taming the rocks over there. My perfect garage would be full of Stanton and Cotic bikes, love the steel and supporting local businesses producing brilliant bikes. I already have a Cotic FlareMAX so I'm on the way 😁... Only my wife and financial ruin can stop me!

I picked up s Cotic Soul last April, they shipped to Alaska for a suprisingly small fee. What a great bike. The frame is quite light for being steel, and I love 27.5" wheels. I was sad to hear the Soul is discontinued, 27.5 is losing popularity, but glad I was able to secure my Soul before it was lost. LOL. I also understand the barrier of wife and financial ruin...

Think I'd be tempted by that though the smaller wheel set is a bit more playful, my FlareMAX is ace and can ride though loads of stuff without getting pushed off line. Riding Captain Ahab on my AL Middle Child was really fun. I wish i was fresh when I rode it. The day after riding Whole Enchilada did me in lol (I did take your advice and rented a Ripmo AF, which was sweet!)

Thanks to your review, I went ahead an ordered a Stanton Sherpa. I’m not an aggressive rider so I opted for a more toned down bike with 120mm fork.

Only ride on Ahab I've done was on a 80MM travel Rim brake hardtail. I definitely got a lot of looks from everybody else as I went past.

I haven’t ridden a Stanton yet, but I’d like to. I like the green. I agree with you on a few things you said. 130mm is what I would choose to run as well, like I’m doing on the Chumba Sendero. The mention of the bucking of the rear end when going too fast over the chunk is a real concern of mine on trails like these or the Dells in Prescott. It becomes hard to brake and can quickly go from composed to out of control and off the line you are intending to take. I enjoy your humble comments about some of the drops you would not even take on a full suspension rig. It’s obvious you were riding Ahab hard. That chest rig was bouncing and from watching you ride areas I ride regularly without it bouncing, this ride must have been extremely bumpy. Well done Steve. Really liked this one. -Nick 😃👍

Great review. Thanks. I just built up one of these last week with all the parts from my Cotic SolarisMAX (140mm X 36mm) and Hope Fortus 30 wheels) This is definitely more playful and pins corners. It feels lighter though it's actually heavier. Back wheel feels like it smashes harder. I have a 35mm stem. No wander whatsoever for me even on the slippiest right rocky gravel climbs. And pedals through the rocks without strikes too.

Hey man, at your convenience, could you elaborate on your experience with the solarismax compared to the switch9er? I am doing my research and have narrowed it down to these two. I was set on the solaris (mainly because of the light weight, but the chainstays worry me) but have always dreamed of owning a Stanton.

@@craigward_mtb I’ve put a few thousand km into the Stanton now. The paintwork is incredible and definitely harder wearing than the Cotic. Stanton is certainly more poppy and is slower climbing, but I love both bikes. I run the SolarisMax as a gravel commuter, longer ride bike that will still handle steep singletrack. Have done multiple 100km+ rides and it’s comfortable. However, I’ve since ridden the Ti Switch9er with the guys from Stanton on their local trails and it’s beautiful i would buy that today if I had the funds.

@@reeksyofoz thanks for the info!!! I have a couple follow up questions. 1. If you had to go race at a pump track or dual slalom, which would you grab on the way out the door? 2. If you had to race down a double black, or ride an Enduro stage race which one would it be? 3. And lastly, which bike would you take on an all day ride consisting of blue and single black trails. I've stared at the geometry charts and have built an understandin, but there is no better way to understand the bikes from hearing it from someone who has rode both.

@@hardtailparty you mentioned trying a longer stem. Dropping the stem will move the bars forward use the bar rise to get you desired hight. The more spacers you have under the stem is effectively moving the bars closer to you, less spacers will do the reverse 👍

I’ve got a fox factory Talas on my hardtail that has a switch to change it from 150 to 120mm. I have to admit I always leave it in the 150mm position but after watching some of your videos I think I’ll experiment with it in the 120mm setting.

@@hardtailparty it’s an Ns djambo eccentric. I think it’s a 2016 model. My local bike shop, Bikeworks ABQ had some frames they were selling a few years ago and I built it up ( sorta, they did some work that I didn’t trust doing myself) it’s a fun bike but I admittedly don’t ride it enough since I primarily ride my full squish and have let buddies that don’t have bikes ride the Djambo. I have done some upgrades lately like finally getting a dropper for it and got a sweet deal on some Carbon Rovals that were on sale(it’s got 142 spacing in the back).

Thanks for the kind words. No, I rarely get recognized, let alone stopped on a trail. I'm still a comparitvely small channel. Most people would have no clue who I am even if I introduced myself as "hardtail party." It's always fun running into viewers though. It means so much when people stop and say hi. Here in Sedona I get stopped a bit more, since people are expecting to see me here on my local trails.

They don't have any models that excite me at the moment. Also, I currently have more bikes sent to me than I have time to review, so I'm prioritizing popular bikes. I'll review one in the future, I'm just not sure when.

Wow, you definitely put that steel hardtail through its paces. Of course you have the skills and the will. I have a Esker Hayduke which, as you know is an inexpensive 4130 Chromoly frame. I also have a Sir9 from a few years ago, it’s a Reynolds 853 mid priced frame. I’m just curious about your opinion on the real value of buying a mid priced or maybe high priced steel frame versus just getting an inexpensive steel frame?

Thanks. Yeah, this is the perfect trail to push a steel hardtail to its limit. To answer your question, it depends on the geo and ride quality. I've ridden cheap bikes that ride great, and I've ridden expensive bikes that rode awful. It's a tough combination: ride feel, geo, price, looks, features, etc. It's hard to find a bike that's got it all. That doesn't mean we're should stop trying though. :) I'm fortunate enough to have ridden a bunch of hardtails. I learn something from each one.

@@hardtailparty so true, so many other factors involved and boils down to what you are doing with the bike and does it check all the boxes. I do think that many frames are overbuilt and give a harsh ride, especially to a skilled rider that only weighs 160 or less. Perhaps branded steel might have a better feel if I it’s purposely built and has good geo.

Great review thanks! I forget if you mentioned this before, but what offset are you running on the fork? I'm kicking around the idea of building one up and I have a Fox34 with 51mm offset laying around. I think I can cobble together a killer hardtail with the stuff I have lying about.

If you liked this bike, you should check out the Bird Zero. Fairly similar geometry and they have a steel model coming out soon. I'll be bringing mine to Sedona for the month of January if you ever want to try one - though I ride a size L

Great review Steve, thanks, I was waiting for long time to see one of Stanton bikes here! Appreciate all efforts You have taken to destroy this bike on this rowdy trail section 😆. Your technical skills are a pleasure to watch and the only sign of how difficult it is, was when You had to stop talking to stay focused. Do You have in your pipeline reviews of other Stanton bikes? I will be more than happy to see someday a Slackline with 120-130mm fork on one of your epic trails.

In Moab, I'd rather have the 29ee wheels due to all the square edge hits and holes. On flowier stuff, a switchback looks like nonstop fun. I'd probably run 27.5x2.3 and 2.4. On paper, love the short rear end of the switchback.

Good question. I would rate the ride quality as exceptional. The communication issues and less than amazing welds and paint bring it down a notch, especially for the price. But the ride is fantastic. According to stanton, the frame i received was supposed to be a factory second to be sold at a discount, but it was accidentally sent to me. Hopefully this review has helped them know where the communication breakdown was so it can be improved for future orders.

I'd love to try one someday. At the moment, I still prefer my banshee paradox v3 and rsd middle child ti for my riding style, but this bike isn't far behind. It really is a great bike.

You said you'd prefer running 130mm fork and 70mm BB drop? ( I know it's measured at 25% sag but still... I think 140 is the way to go but def listen to you on these things)... Super interesting review and build video, many thanks, I've looked at Stantons for quite a while now, such a cool brand. One thing that has kept me from buying one is being 6'2" I don't feel there's quite enough length on the Large switch 9er and the XL Sherpa has that overly tall geo (21' ST), interesting problem to have but I could be wrong there. Just basing it on ride feel of other bikes I've ridden. Effective TT 660ish mm is a nice place for me to be. I think 130 Helm might be more interesting on the Sherpa

Id prefer it with 130 but I wanted to review it with the fork it was designed for. A 130 shouldn't lower the bb too much, just 5mm. I'd take a look at the reach number more than ett for sizing. As seat tubes get steeper, ett shortens. That said, i haven't seen what the reach is like on an XL.

I ride both. I almost always finish with a shot of the bike, where you can see which pedals I'm using. I also usually show the pedals in my first look videos.

That looked really fun. Everytime I watch your rides or reviews it's crazy to see that and think "yea he just rode that." 😁 we don't get that kinda stuff here in VA/MD. Also interesting point about the fork travel. I remember you pointing that out in the Honzo ESD vid; that comment led me to a 130mm over 140mm for my current hardtail build. Would you say the frame is more compliant than the Honzo (you mentioned it not being overbuilt)?

Waaaah, we've got some pretty legit stuff in VA/MD especially if you head up to the Frederick Watershed. That's a perfect place for hardtails on hard trials.

Hello, i would get a nice fork with 159 cm Steerer. you think this will fit on this bike (16)? i saw you have some spacer. i think 159 cm would fit but only with 1 small spacer?

I think you order directly from their website. Shoot em an email. All mtbs can be ridden on flat terrain or on pavement, but this bike is designed for the mountains.

What do you think about riding the bike in a mullet setup with a plush 2.6 650b rear wheel? Could that work regarding the slightly slacker angles and the BB-height? My hope is that the slacker angles combined with the agility of the smaller rear wheel could make it more versatile in the rough and quick.

In my opinion, it would be slower on this wheel. In order for a mullet to really be an advantage, the trail has to be super steep; so steep that you're on the brakes for most of the run. Otherwise, a 29er in back will be faster and smoother in the rough. I think a 130mm fork will make this bike perfect for how i like it.

I wanted to follow up on this since I ride the frame for nearly two years now. My setup is with a 130-160 dual position Pike that I barely ever ride low. Half a year ago I switched to 650b with a 2.6er tire in the rear. Best decision! Can't say that it's slower. Now I ride absolutely everything on that bike and it's really capable. Even in the real steep and chunky it's almost as fast as my 180er Enduro bike (just 5% slower). It jumps a lot better now too - stable and predictable. Absolutely loving it now :-).
