In this project video I show the construction and testing of three SAPI that were made with materials I got from local hardware stores. These plates handled the m855, m193, 7.62x39 FMJ and a shot from the 7.62x54r! Very impressive for plates that cost around 50 bucks to make! I'll make sure to test some smaller sample plates on ballistic clay soon for the BDF readings and make a follow up to this one, so check back soon!
material list for the plates:
Plate #1:
porcelain ceramic used: Capri classic tiles from Lowes hardware store. www.lowes.com/pd/Style-Select...
Fiberglass welding blanket used: Chicago electric 4ftx6ft welding blanket from harbor freight: www.harborfreight.com/4-ft-x-...
Coating I used to keep the ceramic together: Vulkem 116 www.menards.com/main/paint/ca...
polyester fiberglass resin I used: Bondo polyester resin www.menards.com/main/tools/au...
Plate #2:
Same as above, only difference was the welding blanket, and that one was this brand: www.menards.com/main/tools/we... This effected The total weight, as this blanket is heavier and required more resin.
Plate #3:
Same for the ceramics, resin, and sealant. Only difference was the welding blanket: black stallion 24 oz acrylic coated welding blanket: store.cyberweld.com/black-sta...
NOTE: you'll find this stuff on large rolls at welding supplies stores, but honestly, I would stick to uncoated stuff. This stuff underperformed vs the first two plates.
And there you have it! Make sure to coat the ceramics evenly with the Vulkem 116, I think I went a little light on plate two for weight reduction, which is why the ceramics busted more.
Thanks to everyone for sharing my videos and helping me reach 10,000 subscribers. I enjoy making these projects, and the support keeps me motivated to try harder and work longer on these things. we've come along way, With so much more to do, so stay tuned! I was an armor designer for BAE system for years. We made so many plates from dinner plates and tiles. They absolutely work. Add titanium layers as backing or just order 416 stainless steel in 2mm. You get great results. Wrapping it in nylon worth gorilla glue will help spall. Or a thin sheet of aluminum on top.

You can cover the front with thin layer of fiberglass to avoid ceramic falling apart. That way part of the ceramic crush would remain in the armor and contribute to breaking up follow up shots. In production body armor tests, you can actually see that while ceramic is crushed in the pocket, it continues to break apart bullets even when shots land in the same spot.

Can't remember if you mentioned it in this video, but it would be great to see some curved or multi-curved designs. I understand these would probably be of a lower protection rating than the plates shows in this video, but they would fit our plate carrier much easier. Fantastic work so far. Quite unbelievable that such simple materials can be manipulated into working pieces of armour.

This is the most cost effective armor I ever saw. If you used a layer of 40 layers of kevlar you can make it stronger for like the same price. Also if you also made a catching layer of anything that'll slow bullet, it would definitely become a level 4-level 4+. Guard dog has layers like that, the kevlar layer and a few layers to slow bullet. Body armor I realized is a really good business hopefully you get a license and start a business.

Try a thin layer of aluminum sheeting shaped over and around the edges of the front of your plate. Chemsol also makes some FANTASTIC surface coatings that will almost definitely hold together better than the caulking youre using. Navy G is super expensive, but really goes a long way. They have a long line of surface treatments that do great things, but Navy G is the best.

Have you tested different resin types on strength? Like vinyl esters or epoxy resins instead of the polyester resin. You could also try vacuum bagging during construction.
@Techthisoutmeow
@Techthisoutmeow Жыл бұрын
I have a bit. Epoxy is always going to be the strongest honestly. One of my favorite is: theepoxyexperts.com/shop/adhesives/structural-strength/max-bond/max-bond-low-viscosity-ab/max-bond-low-viscosity-32-oz-epoxy-resin-fiberglassing-marine-aero-auto-boat-building-high-impact/ I used this for my ballistic mask and hat build, if you've seen those. It would be fun to do a head to head comparison of resins some day. Vacuum bagging is amazing, as well as resin transfer. I was keeping this build simple, and only things found in hardware stores. but I plan on using more advanced methods and materials in the future! Thanks for the suggestion, showing different methods and materials is what this channel is all about!

Concerning polyester resin application to your woven cloth " fire blanket" 1. you can thin the resin with " Styrene" for quicker absorption and quicker work time 15-20 by volume . You can also add less activator to your resin " as long as you stir it well " this will give you another five minutes work time and less waste. The cure time will be a few hours longer but it will not effect the overall hardness .

What I would like to add is a 4mm-5mm geopolymer near the top layers. Then use the usual stuff you use. I think that would substitute for ceramic plates. It is heavier I think but much harder. Problem is do we have some chemistry professors who would help us mix stuff safely?... Maybe you could add fine diatomic sand in the resin? Might increase hardness and help increase friction for the bullet.
@ShootingUtah
@ShootingUtah Жыл бұрын
The very first thing I noticed is the clumping or grouping of the fiberglass fibers. If you somehow unweaved the fiberglass fibers and could get them to be more finely spread out in the resin I think it would make a massive difference. Think pykrete but with fiberglass and resin. Hopefully this makes sense.

FYI: if you put a layer of fiberglass on front it going to delaminate with the first shot unless you can mechanically fasten it to the back side, using a thread weave or staples. You have to drill small holes in the tiles to connect the front fiberglass to the back. Or sew tile segements between two layers of fiberglass using kevlar or some very strong thread. Maybe mono-filament (fishing line - not as strong but cheap).

Have you observed any difference between the large single-piece ceramic armor vs the smaller pieced-together ceramic armor on crack propagation? That is, do bullet impacts create cracks that “jump” from one tile to another? Maybe the pieced-together armor acts similar to rip stop fabric.

I'm curious if u used the welding blanket for the back 3/4, then put a steal plate on, then put the last 1/4 of welding blanket and resin to stop the bullet spraying your face if that would be better than ceramic. It would definitely be heavier but steal doesn't shatter like ceramic so u could take more rounds b4 having a pass through. Great work tho, 👏 👍
