Honestly, I think you should keep it. The big giveaway was that you enjoyed the way it played, and that it sounded nice acoustically. A pickup swap can change the sound completely, even though I personally thought these pickups sound great for the money. The tuning issue can be fixed TO AN EXTENT depending on how shit the originals really are. Looks good, it's unique, plays well, and like you said, the setup is perfect. In my opinion that's reason enough to invest. Workhorse. Also, Jericho just released the "Ignition" series. Pick any body style, pickups (SD, bareknuckles, etc) with a 25.75" or 27" scale length. It only has a bridge pickup, but they start at $485. Same build quality as the rest of my jericho's so it's a real steal. Worth a look.

For those who wonder, I've got a pair of 707x installed on my 2017 fanfret-7 and now it sounds waaay better than stock one. Also with nut cut properly even the stock tuners (2017 has no locking tuners unlike 2018) can provide some decent stability.

After seeing your review, i think i want this to be my next guitar. I was worried about the quality and acoustics of this guitar though and i am glad to hear it is made well for it's price. And i can definitely tell it's those pickups that make it sound bad, they aren't terrible but they aren't good either, they sound like they just boosted the mids to make it sound like they had better output. So, for $300 and maybe another $200 for replacement pickups, this seems like the best multiscale to get until you want to spend over $1500. Edit: immediately after seeing this i found they have a new and improved version for 2018. It comes with locking tuners, a beefier monorail bridge that has an outer housing with saddles inside, but same string through design. And new pickups as well, and they sound slightly better, at least from what i could hear in the review. And they have even kept the price the same, and build quality is still just as good. All in all i see Harley Benton making some waves in the multiscale and extended range scene.

This is something you could buy if you wanted to try playing a multiscale, esp if you can find it used. After a few months you could sell it on, and but a better instrument if multiscale works for you. I think many people did this with 7- and 8-strings too. For the price this Harley Benton doesn't sound too bad, although the Ibanez sounded livelier, more dynamics. It's probably the high end, which allows you to hear the transients. As for low-end Jacksons, I heard bad things about them, esp about the pickups.

Thank you for the review. Just a few things, I don't agree with you when you say "at least Jackson knows what they're doing", I think you're going at it the wrong way. Most of those well known brands have their guitars made in the same place as the HB ones, and most with the same specs or very similar, don't think because you're getting a 300€ Jackson or Ibanez that its better than this one, those 100€ more don't mean more quality, or better hardware, you're basically paying retailers, etc. The reason they have such low prices is that they don't have any middle man between production or selling of their stuff nor retailers involved, hence the low prices. I agree that their pickups are not the best, but depending on what you're looking for, even if you bought a 500€ Ibanez, Jackson or Epiphone, you would most likely swap them out for Bare Knuckle pickups or something else Misha Mansoor is promoting at the moment. The Carvin\Kiesel pickups are well known for their high quality so of course they are going to sound better than these cheap ones, but that's the point isn't it? For people who cant afford 900€ or 1000€ guitars to have access to something well built for half the price or more of those brand\signature guitars, and then when we save up to get new pickups we're left with a pretty decent guitar for the price. Just my two cents. Keep up the good work.

Soulhenge I honestly believe that might not have been your intention that's why I said I disagreed with you on that comment you made and on the comparison with a high end guitar. All in all you as well as other reviewers just prove the HB guitars are a good alternative since you can make them sound good in a mix. And most of the people out there don't even notice the difference after. Like you said good work horses and awesome alternatives for people that are on a budget.
@MilianMalivukMusic
@MilianMalivukMusic 6 жыл бұрын
The comparison to my Carvin was awarely chosen though, so people can get an idea what the difference is like, taking both instruments out of the box. I'm not saying the Carvin's tone is 1300€ better than the Harley Benton. I'm well aware that at some pricepoint, the sound will not get noticebly better. If I had a guitar in the mid-range like 600-700€, it would probably be a similar result. A custom is also a lot about looks and feel ;) You're right though. In the end, I think I may was too harsh with the Harley Benton.

Soulhenge Soulhenge it's OK a lot of people do that but in your case I don't think you're coming from a bad place or with wrong intentions like most that's why I felt the need to comment and give you my opinion. actually a friend of mine does have a dinky 7. it sounds fine but he had to change the pickups (stock ones were mediocre - not disgusting) and the tuners suck so hard. it is well put together and has a good action and playability, but it's not finished very carefully. i THINK it might well be compared in overall quality with this HB, at least judging by this review

They're only saying that because Ragnaroks are the new "thing." Let the hype die down before you even consider buying a set. Novelty-factor just isn't what it used to be. I can think of a few p/ups that would work well in that guitar that would cost nowhere near as much as a set of BKPs. For starters, SD Invaders are pretty great if "middy" tone is your thing. Invaders are what Karl Sanders of Nile uses in all of his guitars. I've heard them described as "Nile tone in a box." If that's not your thing, there are plenty of other SD, Dimarzio, EMG or Fishman products that would probably be more cost-effective than a set of Ragnaroks or Juggernauts, which are essentially custom pickups and are priced to reflect that fact.
@tribadr4702
@tribadr4702 4 жыл бұрын
One thing to note is that this guitar is a fan-fret guitar and there very few pickup options available for fan-fret guitars. I read in an online forum that Bare Knuckle pickups do make custom pickups with upto 10 degree slant but how would you know what is the right slant for this guitar. Also one thing to note is that the two pickups on this guitar seem to have different slants unlike say Kiesel where the slanted pickups are parallel to each other so their slant must be identical.

I'm thinking of buying one like this, but of the new models, just for the fanfret and the look (I hope they have improved somewhat) I'm more concerned about the tuners than the pickups. Maybe someone sees this and it helps: I‘ve recently bought one, not the new 2020 version, but one of the last 2018?19? Versions. And I must say, it‘s a really nice guitar for under 300€. Setup was garbage, but that was to be expected. After oiling the fretboard, polishing the frets and a good setup this guitar is really nice. The pickups are actually decent, I like them more than Ibanez quantum7s. The neck is on the chunkier side. Tuners are good. Bridge is alright, but restringing is a bit of a hassle. Regarding upgrades: the pickups in mine are definitely 8 string active mounts. I measured them. So no 7 string pickups for this guitar. But you can put an emg808 or fishman 8 string set in there I suppose. Personally I don’t see a need at the moment. Went as low as Drop E, sounds ok.

Would be interesting if you can upgrade it without having to spend alot of money on it as I am interested in buying one for live shows. I mean I have long fingers so I can play basically anything without huge problems. It's just a thing of being used to, I can just play as good on my RGA8 which has 27" scale. I think multiscale improves playability a bit, but it's not a complete new universe, at least for me.

@Broccoli_Highkicks
@Broccoli_Highkicks 6 жыл бұрын
Comparing a relatively cheap Harley Benton to a 4 or 5 times as expensive Carvin is unfair and nonsensical. Harley Bentons are for people who can't afford a Carvin or simply don't want to spend that much on a hobby. It's like test driving a Dacia and complaining it doesn't go as fast as a Ferrari. If a low cost Harley Benton sounded as good as a Carvin, there'd be crowds of guitar players waving torches and pitchforks outside the Carvin factory demanding their money back. Tuning stability is a valid criticism, though. Even for non-professional players, a guitar that can't hold its tuning is an annoyance. There's no excuse for that.
@MilianMalivukMusic
@MilianMalivukMusic 6 жыл бұрын
I gave my disclaimer on that, of course it's unfair ;) I would have used something like a 600€ Ibanez to compare it to IF I had such a guitar - the Carvin is my only 7-string though. I see no sense in spending 300€ for a guitar that is not staying in tune and not inspiring to play, even if you're broke. It's just wasting your money. Better spend twice the amount and get something you're really happy with and that actually has a proper company name on it. I get your argument, but you shouldn't see this as a comparison with the result being "oh look this 1800€ Carvin is better than this shitty 290€ Harley Benton!". It was just to give some reference. Torches and pitchforks in front of the factory? Sounds like a true story happening at Gibson right now.

@ericwilliams7374
@ericwilliams7374 4 жыл бұрын
For that price though, you would be able to afford some better tuners, and maybe some sort of newer nut!!!??? Plus with the angle the strings go to the tuners, inst there a "roller nut" on the market?? I think I have seen something like that some where?? If not, hey there is an idea. Also you could probably do a pick up swap ( after saving money from buying this guitar over a guitar that might cost 4 or 5 times more) and put better pick ups in from the money you saved...????????? So those negatives about the guitar, can easily be over looked.... By me anyways....

Soulhenge oh another thing! The 2018 model has slanted pickups (at least in the photos), how do you know this ones are not the same? I am so confused hahaha

Waiting for a new pickups test... keep in mind you'll be able to use them in another guitar if that guitar doesn't help.

My ideal multiscale would be 28" to 26.5" on a 7 string. My 28" baritone can intonate to Drop F. No ploblem.

@MilianMalivukMusic 6 жыл бұрын
Because it's not worth it. The neck is just too uncomfortable. I've spent this money on more useful things such as plugins and stuff. Aaaaaand I've ordered another Kiesel. That's reasonable right? :D

Doesn't ordering a Kiesel cost a lot extra with all the import costs/taxes etc you have to pay?

Remove the tone control and adjust the pickups’ height to match the sound of the carvin.

The pups are good just kinda meant for a drive petal or a real gainy patch. With all the OD pedals for under 100, you can make this sound beastly. Or, get some 7 string Dimarzio Deactivators or some knockoff EMG or Duncan stuff. Or, well....there's lots of pup brand out there. Finally, I'd trust these guys over Jackson. Saying something like "I haven't played it but Jackson knows what they're doing" doesn't exactly set my mind at ease. Enjoyed the review overall though and the style of giving us some basic tone ideas of how this thing sounds. I'll probably still get one and swap in some hotter pups. Cheers!

I kinda like the pickups from this test for rhythms. It kinda had a Raspy high gain sound like from the first periphery album. A little tooooo raspy for me but eh idk

Yeah I mean at some point they are not as bad as I stated, like when you really dig in the strings for some chuggs, but then again, it lacks punch.

I wouldn't spend any money again for this, but multiscale for that price? Good luck finding an alternative thats better and doesn't cost over 1000€. Thanks for the review. I better save up for a Kiesel. :)

Maybe try to find a used EMG set. Believe me, that shit with some love will be better than a cheap Jackson. Edit: Man, you werent lucky to have bought the 2017 version, maybe the 2018 version would suit you a lot more, since the crucial bugs were fixed. =(

Don't use steel wool.The dust will kill the picups.Use dry green scrubber pads.Cover the pickups with mask or duct tape.That will keep your pickups clean.

You can call the "moving around" in the tuners as PLAY or SLOP. ie There is too much play in the tuner gears.

Well in that case: not really. I've been told the 2018 have improved neck profiles and standard passive pickups tho, so maybe it's worth another try.

Soulhenge think I'll pass one the Harley, will save for something lol Kiesels are awesome quality so i have faith in the quality, don't like taking risk when it comes to quality of the neck. Just wish Kiesel come up with the combination of multiscale and Tremolo

@Soulhenge - Dude buy a Kemper! Then make packs to sell. I would 100% pick them up. You always dial in tones that appeal to me!
@MilianMalivukMusic
@MilianMalivukMusic 6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't even mind giving them away for free just like I do with my POD patches. Kemper is too expensive I think, I wouldn't make use of the profiling feature... I'm keeping an eye on the Helix for a while now, but I'm just too happy with my current "hybrid" sound with the HD500 and the Two Notes impulses.

That's the reason i follow this guy because of his minimalistic gear but monster tone.... kemper and axe fx are just the kool aid of the djent wave we have right now but in reality it's just an overpriced POS that gets dumb people like you persuaded to impulse buy
