Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles with a few years and miles on them are an insanely good deal for the money. Imagine getting a full on Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle for less than $10K... maybe even around $5K? It's 100% possible and these bikes are CLEAN, but you gotta be willing to ride an older Harley-Davidson that's got some miles on it. These bikes didn't get to 30, 40 or 50 thousand miles by accident, they had to be well taken care of which is awesome for you as the new owner. Every used motorcycle purchase is a risk but a clean well serviced touring Harley-Davidson is a lot of gravy for little $$$$

Does a 20+ year old Harley-Davidson with 50K miles scare you away even with a low price?
@yonniestone
@yonniestone 4 ай бұрын
Not at all, if it has some service records and you have a good look over it or have a mechanic do it, remember a higher mileage bike will be ridden often and all the gaskets and seals stay lubricated compared to an old low mileage one that leaks or needs a rebuild to run.

I agree with what you're saying about the older bikes. I currently ride a 2009 road glide that had less than 8000 miles on it when I bought it for $10,000 2 yrs ago You can really find some screaming deals if you're patient.

No, My 14 years old E-glide 96 CU Twin cam has already these hydraulic cam chain tensioners, and these were checked three weeks ago. Everything is still fine, so I'am good to go for the next ten years. Is is a Standard, so no radio on board, but it has cruise control, ABS and a nice Garmin Zumo 660 GPS mounted in the fairing. What else do you need? I would advice my friends to buy these older E-glides, because they are cheap and still fitted with those passing lights, rear crash bars and other nice expensive goodies.

Not at all...if it's got miles on her, it tells me she's been loved and ridden and maintained, most of the time...and those old 1340's are capable of so much more! ❤

I do believe that an older bike is the way to go. Even if it’s your first Harley bike, you probably know someone that can help you look at used bikes. They will need some things or maintenance but the money you save from new is a big help. It’s the way to go in my opinion.

My neighbor picked up a 2002 road king classic a last year. 21k miles on it. not a blemish on it. got for 4700. He put 14k miles on it in 9 months and has not had a single issue. Also has a 2019 road king and says he actually prefers the 2002.

"don't have a lot of the new tech on them", is actually a BIG plus. "not gonna win any drag races", is not what a Harley Davidson is made for.

I've got an 02 Ultra Classic with about 27,000 miles. Last year of the factory Timken bearing, 88 with upgraded hydraulic cam tensioners, S&S cams and lots of chrome. I sometimes think, yeah, a 103 would be nice, but then I go out and polish her and fall in love all over again!

I just paid 7500 for an 07 road king classic with 60,000 miles. 96” 6 speed and a ton of extras. My #1 reason for doing so was the classic look, the chromed out everything, and the fact that if anything does go wrong, I’m $1200- $1400 away from a motor that I can put in and get years of enjoyment out of. You never find a Harley in a junk yard, probably never will

52 yrs of riding 50 bikes owned and ridden. Half of them used machines bought outright for cash. Half of them up and running half needed some help to get up and running. As you said any used bike should get a thorough going over either by yourself or a good qualified wrench .. 50 bikes and only one motor failure that put me out along the road in 78 coming back from Daytona. Not a bad record. Right now there are some great bargains out there given the economy we have. People need funds. Cash speaks volumes now. Its a buyers market. I usually buy from the private sector but have occasionally scored well at both factory and afternarket dealers.. If you dont know exactly what to look for when assessing a used machine take someone with you who can. Either way you can get a decent reliable machine by being patient and shopping wisely.

While the Twin Cam 88 had the Cam chain tensioner issue, the TC 96 had compensator, automatic primary chain tensioner and transmission whine issues. The TC 103 seems to only have the automatic primary chain tensioner issue. Also the TC 88 had hot forged crank through 2002, cold forged crank 2003-2004. 2005 and later Twin Cams have cast cranks. 👌

The type of owner can tell you more about the bike than the mileage. Have seen absolute clappers with less than 5k on the speedo and beautiful mile munchers with over 60k. Pre 03' twinkie with camplate, headwork and a 95 kit will run better and longer than anything currently produced by Harley.

I only have limited time/opportunity to ride, and put 1K miles on it before freezeup. Over the winter I had a new cam chain tensioner, new throttle and idle lines, and some lights/wiring work. Ready to go come spring. Didn't know about the air suspension, will look at that. Best part, it's already paid for.

One additional caveat to the video, the 2009 up Touring has the upgraded frame (eliminating the death defying "harley wobble") and the true dual exhaust which eliminated that pesky rear cylinder cross over which always seemed to break. From '09 to '13 full dressers had the upgraded radio without the troublesome (breakage wise w/ no warranty left $) infotainment system. I'll keep rocking my '16 FLHR Road King HO TC103 till it ceases to function. Great videos Brother! Watch them every week and check out the old ones too for valuable information. Stay safe, keep on riding, and God Bless!

Traded them out after a 3k mile ride and gave the bike a whole new feel. Now it's air, pipes, remap, cam and suspension always. And holy cow, my '14 is 10 years old now. 0 thought of updating to the new ones. Only thing better is the screen. And that's not why I ride anyway. Speaking my langauge right here. In 2022 I bought a 2011 Ultra Limited with 30k on it for less than $9k. It needed tires and later I doscovered rocker box gaskets, so I just upgraded the entire cam chest with lifters, rods, everything! Then I dropped it practicing and the heated grip broke, which lead to my changing the handlebars with new heated grips, and I got a light strip for the front fairing and changed the windscreen. I upgraded the clutch and added steel brake lines, bought a used heated seat and had it reupholstered, and added a back rest I bought off FB marketplace. I thonk that's everything so far. Its up to 36k and I did all the work after riding it as I bought it for 3k. The way I see it I have an insane bike and I've got about 13k into it maybe.

Couldn’t agree more. You want comfortable touring? Frame, fairing, luggage, and an engine that can hum along the highway smoothly. Everything else is just bells and whistles. Harley touring bikes of any age can do that job as well as the new ones. My 18 year old Ultra Classic has given me so many years and miles of riding with nothing but wear & tear maintenance. It still does the job today as well as when it was brand new.

Yes I’m comfortable with my 2004 ride. Had 16000 on it when I bought it now it has 35000. Small upgrades and attentive care keep these old tractors running down the road!! Love mine and I do NOT want the complexity of the new bikes with their EU/DOT compliance requirements. Keep riding!👍

I recently bought a 08 Fatboy 27,000 miles $4,000 . Plugs are perfect, minimal blow by no oil in intake filter and i love it. I've rebuilt engines and transmissions ( Chevy and vw) so if anything breaks i think i could fix it.

I got my 2017 Ultra Limited for 17,000 in 2019 just when the plandemic started with 6,000 miles on it, Real good deal and I put the cam chest upgrade in it and thundermax ecm now its a great bike. I should have saved money and got a older dresser for far less but this is my last newer Harley purchase ever again. They are just too dang expensive in the new market I do not think they will last much longer.

Buying a good clean used Harley is the way to go. I’ve bought several new ones and felt like I was in a trap of high payments, maintenance and the upgrades to exhaust and fuel systems. I wished many times I would have bought used ones instead of new. There are so many nice bikes available and if you pay cash you can avoid all that interest on the bank loans. The tricky part sometimes if finding bikes that people have done what that they call up grades that are hideous. If you consider buying a used bike you may have to spend extra money to get rid of custom uglies. Maybe you can negotiate that in the price or the seller may have the original parts.

That FatBoy you can do a lot with unless you just want a tourer. Those M8's are still up there in price especially the ones I would recommend being 2020 or newer unless you're willing to upgrade the oil pump to the newer style on a 2017 to 2019.

PS: Dont be afraid of an evo bike either. They are great engines easy to work on and the aftermarket has just about anything you will need. If you get a good price on a magnetti marelli injected one no sweat. For a modest price they can be converted to carbureted.

Not sure I would go 20 years old, but I'm finding the 10 year old Ultra Limiteds and Ultra Classics are some of the best deals out there. Cycle trader has 10 listed right now for under $10,000 that are 2014 or newer with under 50,000 miles. They come fully loaded and you can strip it down if you want to. Just my opinion, but I think that's the best touring deal out there.

I’m driving a truck that’s a quarter century old so I surely don’t mind driving something that the “new” has warn off from. Like you said, mileage doesn’t matter that much if the bike has been taken care of and received proper maintenance. As far as spending $30k on a new Harley I’m not interested as they’re not building anything that I much care much for. Not only that but $30k is more than I’ve ever paid for a car or pickup and I’d feel like I got fleeced if it only had 2 wheels and tires!

@@GixxerFoo, the ‘06 Dyna Wide Glide that I bought in December 2021 only had 11,463 miles on it and I paid $7,450 for it delivered 200 miles to my home. That’s about $9,000 less than the bike listed for and took about 78 cents a mile off the $16,620 MSRP it came from the factory with. I’m very happy with what I’ve got and frankly would be kind of miffed if I had $30k stuck in it. I can go hog wild and follow all of GixerFoo’s advice for more cubes and cams and still not be in this Dyna for more than $10k! It was just dumb luck that I got this year of Dyna where the cam chain tensioners had been dealt with by the factory along with the improvements of a 6 speed transmission and fuel injection. The only thing that I was looking for when I started looking was something like a friend’s 84 Wide Glide Evo or another friend’s 89 Softail Custom TC when I saw this bike at a Chicago dealer’s website.

I got lucky and found a 2016 Dyna Switchback with the High Output 103 Twin Cam, 18.5k miles and a Stage I on it for $8500. I know, it's not a proper "touring" model, but it's a bit lighter, has the touring features (bags, windscreen, etc.) and does the job just fine for me and my wife. I also like being able to strip it down if I'm just out cruising. Sitting at 22.5k miles now and not a single issue so far.
