The National Arts Club talks with Joan Walsh, producer of the documentary "The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts The Tonight Show." The film looks at February 1968 when famed singer, actor, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte sat in the host’s chair of Johnny Carson’s iconic Tonight Show, the first time an African-American hosted a late night television show for an entire week of interviews with Black artists, newsmakers, and other Civil Rights activists.

I'm old so I remember Jack Paar and he was a conversationalist and had intelligent guests and entertainers. Johnny Carson turned the show into pretty much just entertainment and plugging products or the guests. Mr. Belafonte restored the Tonight Show back to it's origins of Paar and Steve Allen. Mr. Belafonte always showed that you can mix entertainment with learning.

1968, was too young to watch this show. And grandmother probably would have said, "No, you are just to young." 11-30-2021

He always explained his voice as his vocal cords being stretched like rubber bands. He was trained as an actor - not a singer. He never exercised his vocal cords appropriately, so when he talked his voice was raspy like that but when he sang his vocal cords were stretched out.
