CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) uses a devastating spell during a fight with Draco (Tom Felton).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Adolescent wizard-in-training Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts for another year of schooling and learns more about the dark past of the boy who grew up to become Lord Voldemort in this, the sixth installment of the film series that originated from the writings of author J.K. Rowling. There was a time when Hogwarts was thought of as a safe haven, but thanks to Voldemort's tightening grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds, that simply isn't the case anymore. Suspecting that the castle may even harbor an outright threat, Harry finds his investigation into the matter sidelined by Dumbledore's attempts to prepare him for the monumental battle looming ever closer on the horizon. In order to discover the key to Voldemort's defenses, Dumbledore enlists the aid of resourceful yet unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, who may have a clue as to their enemy's Achilles' heel. Meanwhile, teenage hormones cause the students at Hogwarts to lose focus on their true mission. As Harry and Dean Thomas clash for the affections of the lovely Ginny, Romilda Vane attempts to woo Ron away from Lavender Brown with some particularly tasty chocolates. Even Hermione isn't immune from the love bug, though she tries her hardest to suppress her growing jealousy and keep her emotions bottled up. But there is one student who remains completely aloof from the romance blossoming all around, and he intends to leave a dark impression on his classmates. With tragedy looming ever closer, it begins to appear as if peace will prove elusive in Hogwarts for some time to come.

This scene makes Harry seem like a bad guy, in the book it was Draco who started the fight and tried to use Crucio. And Harry would never run away after injuring someone like that, in the book he immediately tried to help Draco.
@catguy4996

And there's also the fact that Harry had no idea what Sectumsempra would do. He wouldn't ever use it if he knew the effects. But Malfoy on the other hand knew perfectly well Crucio was dark magic, and tried to use it anyway. Malfoy is the bad guy, not Harry.

@@MinzSeoul 😑 ok... first off, it's not something that you need to lean to hard into. Secondly, watch other movies where there are gunfights, and you'll see some uncanny similarities from a visual cinematography perspective. Glass shattering from the impacts of the bullet;(or in this case spells.)Harry literally shot a spell at Draco that leaves him bleeding profusely on the ground. Yeah, he got healed almost immediately, but nevertheless he was still bleeding all over the damn floor in this scene. I'm comparing this to something out of a John Wick or Jason Bourne movie. (hell.. I'm only using those movies as an example since I couldn't think of another one off the top of my head.) And Draco and Harry are both under 18 years old in this movie, so they are still technically "kids" so I don't see the reason to go insulting me thinking I'm some deranged psycho for making that comparison...

This film goes to show a very important aspect of human psychology. A bully is not necessarily a psychopath. Draco Malfoy had been a bully in school up to this point. However, when faced with the challenge of having to murder Dumbledore in cold blood, he chickens out, because it is beyond his conscience(this is also proven in the last book Deathly Hallows). Young Tom Riddle, on the other hand, is quite the charmer in school and loved by almost all of his teachers. However, he shows his true face when he talks about Horcruxes and the possibility of killing seven people, all the while smiling. That's a psychopath, charming on the outside, but a terrifying monster lurking inside.

Tom Riddle is a narcissist in his school days, lacking empathy and compassion, thus becoming the killer he became. psychopaths can't control their anger/emotions whereas Riddle clearly can, these people are massively dangerous because they can blend in to all social circles. They've started changing the definition and meanings of a sociopath as well, but Riddle would go under the old version of that definition, he displays all those old characteristics of a sociopath.

In the book, Harry saw exactly what the spell did instead of seeing the aftermath. The blood SPRAYED from Draco's face and his chest "Like he had been slashed with an invisible sword.". His face was also described upon further inspection as "Shining scarlet." It's really unfortunate how much they downplayed how brutal Sectumsempra actually is, but.. movie ratings, alas.

_"Sectumsempra"_ is some pretty dark magic. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was the *fourth unforgivable curse-* albeit relatively underground and obscure. However, there is a major flaw in this reasoning: *The unforgivable curses require utmost intent to kill, control or torture.* They also require the sorcerer's full awareness & understanding of the inevitable consequences. When Harry cast _"Crucio"_ on Bellatrix Lestrange in the Order of the Phoenix, the curse failed to work because he lacked the cold, calculated, *pre-meditated* and psychopathic intent required to follow through with the torture. It was purely impulsive and spontaneous- a knee-jerk reaction. Conversely, Harry hurled _"Sectumsempra"_ at Malfoy completely oblivious to the effects it would have... *And yet it still worked.* This suggests that this dark spell is not unforgivable.

@@No-Name0087 I thought that too! Its almost like Harry is thinking to himself like "What kind of person am I turning into?" I like to appreciate characters for what they truly are as much as I can. To me, Draco isn't a good guy, but he is just a kid. He is a bully, definitely, but not a killer, and it is sad to see a kid put through that kind of emotional turmoil in the later part of the series. Interesting how Malfoy talks so badly of Hogwarts at the beginning of the film but you can clearly see he is terrified and upset when Bellatrix destroys the Great Hall, and lights Hagrid's hut on fire. Sure, he isn't a good person, but I have to feel bad for him sometimes.

A.I.G Draco always loved his father& Lucius also always loved his son. That was made pretty clear in the books. Draco didnt challenge himself to become a deatheater to make his father proud, he was forced to become one, because Lucius messed up getting the prophecy in the minestry. Neither Lucius nor his wife were fine with what Draco was forced to do in the HBP. Lucius couldnt do anything, since he was in Askaban& Narzissa clearly didnt agree with the task, that was forced on Draco. That’s why she asked Snape for help. It was Lord Voldemort‘s fault. As much as I like Draco& feel sorry for him here, but let‘s not forget, that he was a bully& a big reason for his change was, that he& his parents were threatened by Voldemort. I doubt Draco would have ever changed, if Lucius didnt make any mistakes& stayed Voldemort‘s second in command. Draco only changed, because Voldemort threatened his family. The same goes for his mother& father. Draco also was never abused by his parents. He gets spoiled by both in the books& movies. Draco isn’t the poor abused little boy. That was Harry.

The book version of this scene is far far better than the movie. Trust me, I've read it. And it didn't show Harry so eager to fight in the first place. In the book, he just stood at the door and watched Draco crying and communicating with Myrtle (yes, she was there too). Harry was basically stunned to see Draco crying. It was when Draco spotted Harry's reflection on the mirror that he knew Harry was there. And the fight started. It's really not at all like Draco being in the middle of a mental breakdown and Harry being like, I know what you did. This is showing Harry so rude, oh dear!

What people tend to forget about HP characters is the situation these characters are in. This is a war. Nothing is fair in war, nothing is as it should be. What makes this scene memorable is what it symbolises. In HP it's very easy to distinguish who's good and who's evil, but in the real world... That's not possible. Because good or evil, the people who go to the front line and shoot the bullets are all grey characters. Like Draco, like Harry. They're caught in war, they're fighting in it, right side or wrong side. But _they_ didn't have much of a choice. After the war, there are no winners or losers. Everyone loses. People lose people dear to them, people lose themselves, their health, their sanity. The second wizarding war was a _war._ It's important to remember that this scene points exactly towards that.

Snape, technically would have died due to snake venom, had his wounds been healed. There's irony in the fact that a master postion brewery like Snape would die at the hands of Nagini, a poisonous snake, however in saying that nothing acctauly suggests that Snape, was 100% killed.

Why is Harry supposed to care about Draco's mental breakdown after he's tried to kill him
@angelgirl8533

I think this spell actually managed to smother Harry's hatred for Draco. Harry is a good person and he knew he didn't want this to happen the moment he saw the effect. I still prefer the book's scene, although I was impressed by their acting skills. They cut out the heartbreaking conversation between Myrtle and Draco.

Another thing that's annoying about how they adapted this scene into the film, was they made it seem like Harry was a villain and got away with it. But it definitely wasn't the case. In the book, Harry immediately regretted using that spell on Draco and rushed over to his aid. Snape burst in, took Draco to the hospital wing. He came back to the bathroom and Harry was punished with like 2 months worth of detentions. I believe Harry was so ashamed of himself, he actually accepted that he deserved his punishment... for once...
@omniscientgoat
@omniscientgoat 3 жыл бұрын
You know, at first, Harry's reaction is akin to someone who instantly regrets what he has done: “No -” gasped Harry. Slipping and staggering, Harry got to his feet and plunged toward Malfoy, whose face was now shining scarlet, his white hands scrabbling at his blood-soaked chest. “No - I didn’t -” Harry did not know what he was saying; he fell to his knees beside Malfoy, who was shaking uncontrollably in a pool of his own blood. However, that remorse is quickly swallowed up by his fear of losing the Half-Blood Prince’s Potions book, even though it was what got himinto the sticky situation in the first place. He felt stunned; it was as though a beloved pet had turned suddenly savage . . . And what would happen when Snape saw it? Would he tell Slughorn - Harry’s stomach churned - how Harry had been achieving such good results in Potions all year? Would he confiscate or destroy the book that had taught Harry so much . . . the book that had become a kind of guide and friend? Harry could not let it happen . . . . He could not . . . Then after he successful hides the book, Harry’s next concerns include the Quidditch match he is going to miss because of his detentions with Snape, whether or not he will be able to get to the book again, and his new relationship with Ginny. One concern is noticeably missing. How is Harry not in the slightest bit concerned that he almost killed a peer, regardless of what his relationship was like with that peer? It could be argued that Harry does feel bad for almost killing Draco if one looks at the conversation he has with Ron after he fights with Hermione again over the Potions book: “You don’t think I’m mad, wanting that book back, do you?” “’Course not,” said Ron robustly. “He was a genius, the Prince. Anyway . . . without the bezoar tip . . .” He drew a finger significantly across his own throat. “I wouldn’t be here to discuss it, would I? I mean, I’m not saying that spell you used on Malfoy was great -” “Nor am I,” said Harry quickly. “But he healed all right, didn’t he? Back on his feet in no time.” “Yeah,” said Harry; this was perfectly true, although his conscience squirmed slightly all the same. “Thanks to Snape . . .” But a slightly squirming conscience is as far as Harry will go. The conversation turns abruptly to his detentions with Snape, and next thing you know, Harry is whining about how his detentions get in the way with time he could be spending with Ginny. This is a huge problem. The nightmares that Harry often experiences when he is a witness to violence, torture, and near death are noticeably absent; the regret that should be expected from our hero for nearly committing involuntary manslaughter is barely mentioned. Instead, he is more concerned with staying in possession of the book that got him there in the first place and how inconvenient his well-earned detentions are for his love life. He never once wonders if Draco will be okay; he takes it for granted that his actions will have little to no negative repercussions. For a hero who sacrifices his life for the good of the wizarding world and gives Voldemort a chance to show remorse before he finishes him off, Harry shows a troubling lack of regret and guilt for so rash and dangerous an action. I would like to think that somebody regarded as a hero would feel more than a slightly squirming conscience over nearly taking someone else’s life.

The problem is that yes, Draco was going to use an Unforgivable and that's AWFUL. It's terrible, and in part highlights his desperation. But Harry used an unknown spell marked 'For Enemies'. He had no idea what it would do, if it would cause serious damage, if it could kill someone. It was untested, unknown. But he used it anyway, instead of casting something like Stupefy. And Harry himself KNOWS it was a mistake. You don't see it in the movie but he feels guilty for almost killing Draco in the book. He used untested and unknown magic specifically designed to hurt someone you consider an enemy. That's what the issue is here.

I get that they changed it from the book, but I enjoy that they made Draco more sympathetic and Harry more morally grey. It added more to their characters. Harry lost some of his innocence and good nature from trauma and so he became more bitter. Loss can do that and sometimes you find yourself becoming as hateful as the ones you are fighting against. It makes his choice to fight against Voldemort more admirable. Draco lost his naive admiration for the reality of who his father was and what he truly stood for. He now spends his days in fear of retaliation from Voldemort.
