Now, all parts on youtube are in the correct framerate :)
However, you can still download the video (includes Part 1 to 4) as a splitted zip archive. To unpack just use 7zip, winrar,...
This offers better quality as the version on youtube, because youtube reencodes the video after upload, so there is a quality loss.

I worked as an extra in this movie. I was stationed at NAS Key West with RVAH-6 where it was filmed and they needed someone to tow an aircraft in the background of the opening scene. (Martin Sheen is talking to the helicopter crewman). I'm towing a RA-5C Vigilante in the background. We had just got off a Med cruise on the Nimitz. I knew some of the Sailors and Marines from the ship. It was cool to see them on the big screen. All you see of me is a blurry guy on tractor towing a Vigilante.

read the wiki page, the Tomcat pulled out 80 ft above the water for real, almost bought he farm, and the buzz was like 30 feet from the Texan, he lost his headset and watch, and almost the plane !!, when you see them twisting after , they are not in control.. wake ripped the controls from their hands..looked great though, some brown under ware after that.. Amazing to see what a 14 would do to a WW2 vintage plane..goddam turkey shoot.. and they didn't fuck it in the editing , all looked symetrical and nice and smooth.. it was about the planes not the pilots, wish modern editors would watch this before doing dogfight scenes..no cgi, no cuisinart , 30 second rants by the pilot, sanitary cockpit, enjoyable to watch..

Oddly enough they should actually be folding out when going into combat, but that's Hollywood realism for ya
@Kromaatikse
@Kromaatikse 5 жыл бұрын
@@Nightdare I understand the US military leans on Hollywood to *avoid* depicting actual military tactics accurately. There are genuine counter-intelligence reasons for that, though some of the things they obscure seem trivial and common-sense. In any case, the F-14's wings fold in for supersonic flight, needed mostly to rapidly close range with a distant target or to disengage and retreat. They fold out for anything likely to require a high-lift manoeuvre, including landing. The Zero was not a fast fighter even by contemporary standards (it was easily outpaced by the Mosquito *bomber* introduced around the same time - though to be fair, that's exactly what the Mosquito was designed to do), but was known for an exceptionally tight turning circle and high turn rate (possibly only the Spitfire could match it). The F-14 would definitely want to have its wings out to tangle with it, even if it employed the "boom and zoom" tactics developed specifically to counter the Zero during WW2. As has been traditional for many years, the Zeroes themselves were actually played by T-6 trainer aircraft, painted appropriately. The resemblance is close enough for movie purposes, and there are no Zeroes left in flying condition - due mostly to the extremely thorough job the Allies did of destroying the IJA and IJN air forces towards the end of the war. In fact, it seems unlikely that a direct Zero replica would be approved to fly these days; they were very flimsy.
@botcheek482

@Nightdare
@Nightdare 5 жыл бұрын
@@botcheek482 Read up on the F-14's variable sweep wings You have the part about angle depending on speed right, but a Tomcat would never go to fully back swept wings when needing to maneuver (dogfight), or approaching stall (going too slow) If I go by the timeline as depicted, the F14's were already close enough to engage, which would not require a long distance "sprint" to reach their targets, i.e. they had no need for full delta wing configuration to intercept When a Tomcat sweeps it's wings back, it looks cool But when it's time for business, it's not about looking cool

That never happened......In one scene where an F-14 "thumps" a Zero by flying under and streaking upward in front of the slower aircraft, the resultant "jet blast" of turbulent air was so intense that the control columns of both of the Zeros in the scene were violently wrenched out of the pilots' hands and caused both aircraft to momentarily tumble out of control. The lead pilot's headset, along with his watch were ripped off and out of the open canopy of his Zero, resulting in a few anxious moments as the F-14 pilots were unable to establish contact................ During the engagement when a Zero fires on an F-14, in order to get on the "six" of the low and slow Zero, the jet fighter did a low pull up that ended just 100 feet (30 m) above the ocean in a screaming recovery.

I have to laugh maniacally everytime the Vulcan opens up on the first Zero. That's about 150-200 rounds of 20mm; that would have pulverized that Zero or sawed it in half. And that AIM-9 Sidewinder probably cost more than that second Zero.

Reminds me of an airshow I went to as a kid. They had an F14 doing a flyby along side a late-war P51 Mustang. The Mustang was giving it everything he could to keep up with the Tomcat, the throttle was *wide* open! The Tomcat had his gear down, flaps down, and nose pitched right up, just to prevent himself from stalling at the speed the Mustang was flying. Absolutely crazy!
@Elthenar

Just read a review on IMB about the making of this movie. The cool maneuver where the F-14 pilot dives for the deck at 4:18 was actually the pilot recovering from a stall. The person who wrote the post had spoken to an F-14 pilot about the maneuver, and he actually knew the pilot who flew in the movie. The pilot stalled trying to stay behind the Zero and had to dive to the deck to regain airspeed, barely pulling up in time!

Yeah, very slow speed (below 200 knots) and very high angle of attack while changing throttle was a recipe for stall in those early TF-030 engines on the F-14A. Those zeros were always below 200 knots and F-14 was designed to fight at much higher speeds (over 350 knots).

The "Tornado" can sweep his wings too, but it never looks as agile as it does on the F-14.
@AudieHolland
@AudieHolland 4 жыл бұрын
The Tornado is no dogfighter. It is an interceptor. And as good as the Tomcat looks in this movie, it's not a dogfighter, at least not originally. The swept wings design simply enabled it to fly superfast super efficiently when they are swept back. And the other configuration is to preserve fuel, cruising around on watch for enemy planes threatening to attack the carrier. That way they can fly slower, preserve fuel and remain on post longer without having to refuel. And you can't safely take-off or land if you only had the supersonic wing configuration.
@AudieHolland
@AudieHolland 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, as much as I love this scene and the movie, knowing a bit about swept-wings planes. It makes no sense. When they are playing with the Zeros, the F-14s have their wings swept out because they need the agility and fly rather slow. Sweeping back the wings is only done to achieve maximum speed, supersonic speed to intercept an enemy threat in time. And either wing configuration does not effect their ability of firing their missiles because: 1) that would be stupid: can't fire the missiles when your wings are not swept back! 2) I know from fact that the some of the missiles are directly attached to the plane's body so it doesn't matter and any missile on the wings is on a pylon that rotates automatically in response to the wing sweeping (it would be really bad for aerodynamics if they didn't)
@planegaper
@planegaper 4 жыл бұрын
@@AudieHolland tomcat didn't carry missiles on the out wing panels, only the F111 did and had problems with the mechanism , aim 9's are slung under the engines, on a pilon, pheonix, and aim 120, in the belly recess .. Tomcat can dog fight, it's not the most agile , but the wing design is excellent (A6 uses the same wing) and with the autosweep it did make an effective , agile dogfighter.. Though it was heavy as it was navalized , big gear, heavy wing box, tailhook etc, so it certainly more effective bvor, but they ate mig 23's for breakfast in the Gulf of Sidda .. the first gen 's with the tf33's had surging problems, but the later versions F110, 120, upped the power, had a better bypass ratio, and far more reliable , also much more dry thrust, plus composites were used much more lightening the air frame in later versions as well.. Don't kid yourself, I'd be wary of tangling with an F14, no matter how good a plane I'm flying, plus they train the living fuck out of Naval Aviators as well, so yer not tangling with some novice.. Strait on with an F16, even altitude, sure, the 16 can turn tighter, but the 14's a lot faster, better rate of climb at high alt, much faster dive, accelerates faster in a strait line, more powerful radar, more electronic countermeasures chaff and flare, if the pilot can put these to good use and not get into a turning war with a 16, even odds.. Mind you, an F14 kitted out is like 60 million, and guzzles fuel in a combat situation like an idiot, a 16 costs like 20 mil , can sustain more g's for longer, tighter radius, better pilot ergonomics, it's lighter and more sensitive to the touch (stick and fore arm pressure rather than moving the stick), fly by wire, smaller target, better lift to drag ratio, bubble canopy, helmet mounted sight.. tough call, comes down to tactics in the real world..

One of my all-time favorite movies. No CGI, just all film, greatness! I'm no aviator but I have to imagine those were very dangerous shots to film for the Mitsubishi pilots. I don't know if some of those moves were exaggerated but when they first passed them it looked like just the thrust almost knocked them out of the sky. My parents took me to see this movie like ten times when I was a kid. A shame Hollywood doesn't try for more original stories like this one.

Just a minor point of order - there were no Mitsubishi Zeroes in flyable condition during the 70s. I understand that's changed a little bit now. I think one or two have been successful restoration projects since then. The "standard" substitute plane used to portray the Zero in films and TV (Such as in Robert Conrad's Black Sheep show) was the AT6 Texan - which had a similar enough profile it could reasonably pass. If you squint. Otherwise - total agreement - and yes - as comments elsewhere on this video have stated, those Texans DID get knocked around something fierce when the Tomcats blew through on that first pass! To the point where one guy lost his helmet and both of them got the control sticks yanked HARD out of their hands! And let's give some kudos to the camera crew - I don't know what THEY were flying in, but that camera work was ON POINT! Steady as a rock and always center frame on the action, no matter how crazy the fighter crews and the "Zero" stunt pilots got with their manuevers!

Which makes no sense because the wings are automatically controlled based on airspeed and don't fully sweep back until past 400 knots which is way too fast against the zero. They can be manually swept back but then you lose a lot of lift and at slow speeds would be a nightmare to try and fly. Either way there was no need to sweep considering most of the bfm was at very low speeds for the tomcat.

I saw this movie when then a grad student at Michigan State. The film was in initial release at the beautiful Michigan Theater on South Washington Avenue, Lansing. At the afternoon showing, I was nearly the sole occupant of that enormous old movie palace. I was part of the ground crew that helped secure the VF84 (Jolly Rogers) planes that were part of the filming, after they landed. They were stationed at NAS Oceana, VA Beach, VA. Though the Zeros did sacrifice armor for weight (which made them fast and maneuverable) I would say that ANY WW2 era fighter from any nation from that time would be confetti when hit by an M61 20mm burst. Not just Zeros but ANY fighter. Since all of the prop planes are so much slower, you can score a massive barrage of hits against them and with 20mm HE rounds? The plane is mince meat.
