Porsche built 1580 examples of the Porsche 911 2.7RS back in 1972-1973 but only 200 of those were the lightweight versions and this is one of them. In this video I delve into the details to see why it's so highly regarded and how Porsche made it such a lightweight.

My mother is from Germany. When I was 12 she took me to meet all of our relatives. One day her aunt in Ludwigsburg took us on a bus tour to Strasbourg France. I had never been on a large tour bus. All of a sudden a gulf blue 911 flew by us, pulled over and a tall blonde woman climbed out of the passenger seat. She was our tour guide and her boyfriend was an engineer at Porsche. This has been, hands down my favorite 911. I also began a thing about tall blondes

This really made me laugh. I am an expat and live in the Alsace about 1/2hr south of Strasbourg. I moved here with my wife from Munich. She is originally from there. I owned a guards red 911when we met. I am 6'. She is just under 6'1". And very blond. (Just the hair, tho. She's not dropped-on-her-head-too-often-as-a-child blond 😛) Still own that red 911.

One of 17 UK Right Hand Drive (M471) Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweights - Manufactured by Porsche in Stuttgart, West Germany in March 1973 and finished in Light Yellow with factory option: (220) Limited-slip differential. Supplied new in 1973 by AFN, Isleworth to Anthony Bamford of J.C.Bamford Excavators Ltd and first registered in the UK as JCB 123. In 1974, AFN then supplied the car to its second owner- Dessie McCartney of Ireland, who re-registered it as GIA 7200. Purchased for the sole purpose of beating the mighty Ford Motor Company works two-litre BDA Escorts in their heyday, McCartney began to carve out a career in rally driving with GIA 7200. The 1975 Galway International Rally was Dessie’s only outright international win in a Porsche but his multiple, second-place finishes are legendary. If there was to be a ‘Mr Porsche’ in Irish rallying, that title would, without doubt, belong to Dessie McCartney, who’s rally career was the envy of many. GIA 7200 Rally History: 1974 Donegal Rally - 3rd Texaco Rally Manx Rally - 2nd 1975 Galway Rally - 1st Circuit of Ireland - 2nd Donegal Rally - 2nd Lombard RAC - 13th By the end of 1975 the dominant Porsches were beginning to struggle and feel the Ford reaction and it was becoming a simple numbers game in terms of BHP. The trusty 2.7 Carrera RS with 210bhp was showing sign of a power struggle and so it was eventually sold and replaced by a 270bhp 3.0 Carrera RS. In 1976 GIA 7200 was sold to Richard Jackson and re-registered in the UK as SPY 44. Richard competed in national rally events and entered the 1976 and 1977 Mintex Rally. In 1979, the car was sold to Alan Baker, who kept it for ten years, and then sold in 1989 to Richard Allen. In 1993, Richard Jackson was then able to re-purchase SPY 44 and this time he kept it for the next twenty years, until eventually selling it to William Loughran in 2013. William Loughran then commissioned Tech 9 Motorsport Ltd to restore the car, carrying out a meticulous two-year restoration. The restoration gave absolute regard to preservation, with hundreds of hours spent on dressing out rally dents and preserving the factory bodyshell and floor-pan. The car also retains its matching-numbers, type 911/83 engine, number: 6630943, which Tech 9 stripped and rebuilt. They also report that it retains date-matching cylinder heads and cam housings, intake system and fuel injection pump, etc., items which very often become replaced in a competition car.

Great research. I have scans of slides taken in the 70s of an orange 911 driven by (I think) Dessie, with the reg GIA 6, on various events including a Scottish Rally and possibly an RAC and/or Mintex. Do you have any info about this one, or is it a totally different car? I believe he had a brother who also rallied, is this correct?

Back in 1974 when I was 19 years old I was on a touring holiday in Austria in the Tirol region with my girlfriend and I happened to pass a yellow 2.7 RS Porsche same as the featured car parked in a layby, later a mile further on down the road from a campsite I could hear the RS blasting round the local roads and the sound of that flat 6 racing engine was so loud and glorious I've never forgotten it. Later in life I built a business restoring historic race and rally cars and prepared a Ford Escort RS 1600 for a Portugese client who used it to compete against (amongst other cars) a couple of Spanish Porsche RS 2.7 cars in a historic racing series in Portugal, our Escort weighed in at 895 Kg and these RS Porsche's were around 910Kg, I developed our 2 litre Ford BDA engine to the point where we could beat those Porsches which got us a whole lot of protests but we were proved legal, one of the protesting Porsche owners came up to me after my client beat him and said 'my engine was built, tuned and dyno tested by Porsche in Germany and it gave 345 hp and no piece of shit Ford BDA can ever get near that kind of power so the only way your car beat my car is by cheating' and he went on and protested our engine, (found legal), I took it as a compliment at the time, years later I met his team chief mechanic at a race at Estoril and he admitted to me that the car in question wasn't 2.7L but 3 litre all along! The reason why the Escort BDA was so fast was because I built what was in effect a big bore 4 cylinder version of the famous Ford DFR F1 race engine which was fitted with Lucas mechanical injection and limited to 11K rpm, on my own dyno it made well over 300 hp at 10.5K revs along with fantastic torque and great throttle response, happy days!.. @@johnchurch4705 Yes, I went over to Terry's place in Essex once or twice to buy BDA parts off the man, we had some long and interesting conversations about BDA engines and others. He was restoring the mechanical parts of some rare classic cars at the time where the original engines and gearboxes were completely missing and he was creating new items from old photos and drawings, he was designing the casting moulds and having new crankcases and head castings made and so on, I remember him showing me some very nice pistons he had made for one of the projects he had on the go. Terry built all the BD's for Ford back in the halcyon days of Fords success in rallying back in the 70' and 80s, he asked me what the highest maximum revs at peak horsepower I was getting and I told him that it was around 10.6K and over 300 hp from a 2 litre unit which he was quite shocked as he said that the best he had seen from his own engines was below 8K and around 240 hp peak but that figure was probably more suited to off road rallying anyway although tarmac rallying might have been a different matter, happy days..

What a BLAST! Harry, you obviously don't have to be concerned about deer jumping out in front of you in the farm land that you're driving through. Makes for a much faster (and safer!) drive, no doubt. Unlike the farm country in Michigan (USA)! Please keep bringing us these "vintage" cars from my youth! I will never forget driving out west in Wyoming (USA) in 1975, in my 1972 Opel 1900, with my buddy Ron. We were both 20 years old, and I was driving that old 2-door black vinyl topped coupe flat out at about 90 mph, when I saw this dark green speck in my rearview mirror, getting bigger and bigger (and noisier and noisier). A "ducktail" 911 blasted past us at wide open throttle on a perfectly smooth, straight but undulating 2-lane state road. The guy must have been doing over 130 when he passed by us. What a thrill that was! Also, right after he passed by a pronghorn antelope ran across the road in front of us only 40 yards away!

Notice that depending on the driver side location, the opposing passenger side did not have a side view mirror. So the only side on this model where a side view mirror was located was on the driver's side. What a car and brand!!!!

Having owned two 911s back in the early '80s (a Carrera 3.0 and an SC Sport) and driven several of today's models, I have to say that the 911s of the '70s and '80s were WAY more fun and satisfying to drive . . . they were PURE motorcars in that you felt totally part of the car . . . today's technological "advances" and all the extra weight/bulk remove that relationship.

Off the overnight ferry from Le Havre to Southampton early one Sunday morning and less that an hout later I was in the outskirts of Birmingham, seldome under 120mph and not above 140 or so......it was 1975! I'm not talking about this RS, but of the older 911, short wheel base is more nimble than the longer wheelbase ones even though they do look similar - just from my experience driving early 911s.

What a magnificent car. I once heard the sound of the motor being described as akin to the sound of a 44 gallon drum of Nitrous being thrown down a metal staircase. That description stuck with me for over two decades. I remember looking at being offered a lightweight twenty five years ago for AUD$150k and turning it down because I thought it was just too expensive. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Biggest regret of my life. Thank you Harry for highlighting this incredible machine

Given the rarity and market price of those cars, to see one driven skillfully and at speed on regular roads is a very great pleasure. Thank you so much, Harry, for giving all of us the sights and sounds and feeling of the 2.7RS. After seeing this video, it's easy to understand why the owners of these early cars were so passionate and devoted to the Porsche marque.

Having owned 911’s from 912’s to a 911 RS replica and having restored a few genuine RS models, it’s great to see you actually drove it like you stole it. Love my 911’s. Rear engine air cooled, the greatest cars ever created. Love ya work Harry. You know the 2-7 RS was based on the lighter E series chassis. The next model 2.7 Carter’s was a heavier G series body that was semi galvanised.

There’s a world’s difference in terms of design and safety requirements, to say nothing of emissions requirements of a modern day car. Porsche certainly could make the cars a little smaller, but they’d never come back to something like this.
