The 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport the best driving classic 911 in the real world? It has lots going for it, lightweight, tweaked engine and suspension and 231bhp from its 3.2litre air-cooled flat six. Many thanks to www.thehairpincompany.co.uk/f... for the loan of this lovely 57,000 mile example. It was going up for sale for £150,000 but sold before it even hit the website!

Harry, my dad and I just watched this - he heard engine note and asked me to play this from the start! Talk about dewy eyed! He had a Carrera sport (coupe with the big wing, and sport buckets 1988 model, just early g50 box. You highlighted so many of the things he loved about the car, how you could place it on the road, the engine note, the quirky switches, etc. The only car he ever hankered after, had it for 20 years from 1994 to 2014, sale due to moving to a house without a garage. Thanks for making him relive so many happy memories - he just loved how much fun you were having!

I remember Road & Track featuring this car back in 1987 and 1988. They seemed to be pretty impressed with it. It had everything you needed and nothing you didn't. Modern cars have become so needlessly complicated and overly engineered that a car like this today would be a huge blessing.

Market dictates that sadly. Hopefully it will come full circle and we will start getting more driver oriented cars. Mazda said they were developing an naturally aspirated inline 6 and keeping manual gearboxes as options. BMW too, and both have released cars recently that are lighter than their previous iterations, so all is not lost!

Harry, my dear Man! Your video has been online for about 10 mins. People are raving about it, you and this amazing creation! I´ve had a horrible day, even a bird shat on me. I saw the notification of your video. Pressed play. 2 mins later, I was cheering, goosebumps over this purist of an 911. For me, this is a perfect car. The purity and honesty of the car, crude and who cares. And that ENGINE!! This is a perfect "get happy after a shite day" car. Thank you Harry for the video, for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and your bad ass driving!

Owned one and ran the Porsche Club "Club Sport register" for many years. Used to track / monitor all but 3 of the 53 UK cars and many of the ROW types. I loved mine, had 10 years with it and having driven all sorts of super and hyper cars, only want for one car now. My car was featured in so many magazines and I was always proud to display. Agricultural, noisy and rough - but the driving was excellent. Soooo much feel from the steering. Mine was without underseal and had it hand mapped for 98 octane fuel. Pulled like a bloody train. Sure..not like a GT3RS or Tbo, but the feel was outstanding

Right? I was going to make a comment about modern cars and how their track focused models with all the deleted features (like... door handles, looking at you Porche) actually cost you MORE. In fairness those models usually have more carbon fibre for weight savings, but still!

My old friend Jim Palmer (rip) had a club sport. I will never forget those laps at donington with me as a passenger and the many laps at Croft, cadwell where we would chase each other around on track days. The CS was a faithful companion for Jim and they went on many European adventures together visiting spa and Nurburgring among others. Great car, great bloke. Because of Jim, the CS has a special place on my heart❤️

What a great video! My first 911 was an 87 3.2 Carrera, and it’s wonderful now to hear that engine howl again. I also had an RS America which is similar to the Club Sport: stripped for weight reduction, and with the manual steering rack borrowed from the 930. That was the best steering I’ve experienced. Thanks for the fun blast from the past! Oh, and Derek Bell drove my ‘87 around Willow Springs. That was an eye opener!

Well spotted, indeed. Agree, I love the earlier 911s. Brings back memories of my Dad having an early 1970s 2.0 911t, in an almost Kawasaki-esque green, back in the 80s. Fabulous car. We drove through the Alps, Dad driving, mum in the front passenger seat, me in one back seat, my brother in the other, and my baby brother wedged in a baby crib over the central hump and our legs. I kid you not! And my dad drove it like he stole it. Those were the days!

Echo that. Harry's unusual in being not the slightest “up himself”, despite being evidently wealthy and owning a literal barn full of really lovely machines. In a recent year in review episode, he stepped through the work done, experiences and costs of the years ownership. I’m nothing like as wealthy, and even I thought “You know, considering what he got for his money, it’s not that big an outgoing”. I’m not a buyer of even moderately expensive cars, £50K not £150K, but if you’re in between that & buy unwisely, you could shed that much in depreciation in a handful of years. I doubt Harry’s “fleet” does anything but appreciate. I’d not be faintly surprised if even restoring 1-2 cars per year, mostly farmed out to marque specialists, aren’t “free” from a balance sheet perspective. Some of those cars will tip the scales at close to a million pounds. What a great way to diversify wealth. In a different life, eh? I often reflect that I couldn’t really ask for much more from my life than Im fortunate to have. But the two exceptions would be a much bigger secure space and a couple of nice, old cars and 1-2 more motorcycles. I find time an even bigger hurdle. That makes vicarious enjoyment of Harry’s garage that bit more treasured.

Such a beautiful car and the engine sounds glorious. I wanted a 911 all my adult life but only recently managed to buy probably the cheapest UK 911 I could find. It may only be a 996 but it's a manual, non sunroof 3.6 so still hints at the air cooled cars it replaced. I love how it sounds and drives. I just need to add some lightness.

Another great car review. Thanks Harry. I love this period of 911, when lightweight meant lightweight. Although i do quite like the most recent model, the water cooled era cars, to me, just don't have that same magic of the air cooled ones. Plus, living in London, new 911's are everywhere, and not like, when i was younger, growing up in rural Oxfordshire, when seeing a 911, or any Porsche for that matter, was a memorable sight. Just one thing though. Although i understand about putting a car on a diet to lose as much unnecessary weight as possible, only having the one sunvisor seems a little ott. Having a passenger visor without a vanity mirror, yes, but how much difference is losing a couple of sun visor ounces of going to make to performance

Great review Harry, all the pluses and minuses of owning a 911 3.2. I owned a 3.2 Cab from 2005 to 2011. The interior was odd - switchgear, pedals, but the view over the five dials looking at the raised guards - beautiful.G50 with a short shifter great and the noise from start-up to redline, hairs on the neck!! No loss with air-con, I had it here in Australia, didn't really work - condenser at the front, pump in the rear, just too much loss and only added weight.Since I sold, prices doubled, but worth every cent.

I had a 1964 and a 1974 VW Beetle and I was in a shopping centre car park one day (Corrimal, Australia) and an old bloke approached me to talk about my white 74 and happened to mention casually that he had a 1966 911E (white as well). So eventually I got his number and gave him (and his 911) a social visit and surprisingly he offered me to drive it after he'd warmed it up. After driving old Beetles for years what struck me right away without a doubt was the thought that the 911 felt like a VW Beetle where everything was familiar yet more iron fisted in the sound and push it gave on throttle. Basically the pedals were like a VW but took more effort to push. Getting back in my VW the VW now felt like a toy version of the 911. I've also driven a 1978 and again the Beetle feel beefed up was there. There's really nothing like those rear engined cars.

Considering the weight savings, that one change alone would really center the weight on this car more than a deleted sun visor...plus all your buds would know this is a serious drivers car. Man, this thing has all the right 911 sounds, amplified.

Magic...pure magic. Nothing like an air-cooled 911 in the hands of skilled driver with a proper manual transmission.

Well, well, well - a 911 that I somehow had missed all together. Great video, as usual.

I remember having the privilege of driving one at the time on country roads with one of my friend who is a car journalist. Soooo nice , light and nimble and i remember the sound , chainy-like.... Cheers 🇨🇦

This really was the greatest era for cars. E30 M3's, RS Sierras, UR quattros etc. And these.

I had that same Pioneer head unit in my old E30, trying (as I'm sure the owner of that did) to keep it looking somewhat retro but yet have a good stereo.

Money saving tip: Take the space saver out, another 15 kgs gone. Porsche didn't think to charge for that in 1989. Today it would be a 10k option.

Don’t know why, just never really got the 911 ‘thing’ but as I get older (48 now) I seem to be becoming fond of them, especially the older air cooled ones. Harry really sold this one to me though, his enthusiasm for it was infectious! My first lottery garage will always be full of BMW’s but I may now build a Porsche one next to it, 🤔

I remember in the late 90's when I had a 3.2 Carrera and the general consensus was that these were not really worth the extra £5k or so over a standard car. How times have changed that viewpoint....

I am working for this bloke Harry who has one of the most beautiful Bentley’s I have seen it’s absolutely stunning. What a design. It’s a 2010 Super Sport with 20k miles a full Bentley service history. It’s in mint condition. I asked him if he would sell it and his reply was that he was thinking about it. I immediately thought of you because I know you appreciate the Bentley brand. I Watch all of your videos and I can see this in your garage it’s been cherished. This bloke has some connections with Bentley. He is a lovely bloke who lives in Wheatley Oxford. If my project house build was sold I would consider it but brexit has me on pause. I should have been a farmer lol.👍
