My grandma wore a dress every day. She sold cut flowers and eggs for her mad money which she spent primarily on fabric so she could make her own clothes. Besides her daily chores in the flower and vegetable gardens, she tended the chickens, baked bread, butchered a chicken and cooked three meals on a wood burning stove... oh and kept a nice clean house. While she did all of that grandpa farmed 40 acres by himself and tended to the pigs and dairy cow. He worked dawn to dusk 6 days a week. After the evening meal they would sit on the front porch where grandpa would smoke a cigar and sip bourbon. Both lived into there 90s and were sturdy, rugged individuals. A few days ago the internet went down for 20 minutes and I just about lost my mind...

Love, love, love your harvest videos. You have no idea how much joy you bring to so many viewers’ lives. I am sort of in a medical “lockdown” due to a bum knee and unable to walk and tend to my garden right now. Watching all you flower and vegetable farmers on a loop. Your farm looks spectacular, especially in the fog. Reminds me of the English “bluffs” in so many novels.

I take care of the Gardens for a lovely elder woman (a sweet friend of me Mums). This year in a space kind of shared between her and her neighbour there were several unidentified seedlings I left to see if they were "a something" or a weed to be determined later. When later came and this area was filled with flowers, I pulled the (now large) weeds...except one. I wasn't sure of. The neighbour happened to step outside to go for a walk. I asked him "Did you plant this? Or is it a weed?"He said "No I didn't plant it, but I think it's a Sunflower. The girth on this stalk was amazing. The sweet woman loves Sunflowers, so I told her about it, and I left it. As I drove around looking at all of the thin stalked Sunflowers in plenty of yards, I began to think to myself "Oh crap, how embarrassing- it has to be a "WeedZilla" and now the entire neighbourhood gets to enjoy it! Yay me." A. couple weeks later she calls me and asks if I'd come and do some work. Of course- I say. She says "you know that plant that you were not sure of?" I said yes scrunching my eyes closed... She says it is a Sunflower and it's beautiful! (stay with me it will be worth it) I was relieved. When I arrived I noticed it had a regular size Sunflower head. HUH? I thought. With a stalk that thick I kind of expected more (insert your own joke here). Later I took a closer look- It has 4 heads below the top one getting ready to open. Then 4 more below that, then 4 more below that and yes- 4 more below that! Like a Christmas Tree Sunflower! I have never seen anything like it! I have to get photos! I want seeds! WOW So amazing! I have to look it up and see if it's been done before! Take THAT Sunflower Steve!

Absolutely beautiful flowers, as well as a nice variety. From a florist perspective, I personally like to have more of the greenery left on the stalks, as well as blooms that are in various stages of maturity. With time management being crucial in business, leaving more greenery on stalks is beneficial not only to the grower, but the buyer as well. I’m not sure who your marketing your flowers towards. If your looking towards providing flowers to florist. Single stem product is very limiting for floral design. Best regards and best wishes.

Your flowers are so gorgeous! I especially loved the zinnias and amaranth. I wanted to have a cutting flower garden this year, but I had a lot of failures, for several reasons. I spent so much on seeds and didn’t plant all of them, I think I might try again next year. Do you go by the planting dates on the package for your zone, or do your own planting dates? That was one thing I did wrong, I guess, planted things too early. I learned quite a bit, so that’s good. I planted a 93’ row of zinnias across my yard by the road. They just started blooming and they are so beautiful, I go out every day just to look at them and take pictures. Flowers are worth all the work, I have learned. They are lots harder than growing veggies. Thanks for the tips, you are a wonderful person, and so fun to watch! I’m glad the word is getting out about your business, congratulations!

Loved this harvest video! Everything looks so beautiful. Have you ever tried growing calla lilies? I am in zone 4b like you and they are the easiest tender bulbs to grow. I leave mine in black plastic pots and sink them into the ground for summer(they bloom better when crowded), then pull them in the winter and keep them in a cool basement/cool heated shed. Maybe a fun crop to try for the future. They multiply over time too. 🙂

Trust me, we are in the same position with all of the rain down here in New Orleans! I feel like it has literally rained all summer long! It’s nice because it’s so dang hot, but all of my sun loving flowers and plants don’t like it. They are barely getting an hour of sun a day. Plus a lot of these thunderstorms come through and just plow away at all of my delicate flowers😔 But on a good note, I just bought my first Rudbeckia plant tonight. Though you don't look like Sarah Key girl with wicker basket, it is still joy to watch!! What a sweet problem to have after all the trouble you had to raise those flowers: too much demand:))) Stay well !!!!

This a great video. Hits all the reality of flower farming. You really gotta have all your ducks in in a row before harvest time hits because that WILL take all your time. And for the weather everyone is dealing with, be it rain or extreme heat ,that harvest window really gets affected. Have been pinching my phlox and stems getting better. Very envious of the asters , mine got disease before I could even transplant so dumped them. And lastly, already getting seeds in flats for over winter transplants. Crazy to think I am planning next spring. Still have not gotten bulb order in. Thank you, thank you

My skies have been looking like that here in Alberta, but it's all smoke from the fires in BC.

We are getting the smoke from the fires in Canada and we are in Central New York area to the point of a air quality alert today...kinda of an eerie feeling.
