It seems like DLSS 3 frame generation is a kind of "win more" type of deal. If you're already running the game at the level you want it to, it can just increase the framerate and smoothness, but if the game isnt running at where you want it, it cant really fix your issues without making significant compromises elsewhere. Thank yiu for the very well made and easy to understand video! I understood on a basic level that DLSS used AI to make fake frames to increase framerates, but i didnt know at all what that meant in actual game implementation. Now i know where amd how to use it :D

The one problem I have with DLSS 3.0 is that Nvidia uses a software lock to allow frame generation to only work on Ada Lovelace cards. Modders have bypassed the artificial barrier and enabled it on Turing & Ampere cards. It works fine but needs driver optimization from Nvidia to perform as well as it does on 4000 series. So Nvidia is, yet again, trying every trick up their sleeve to get people to buy the newest and shiniest toy by way of artificial software segmentation and FOMO. Nvidia can't stand the thought of people getting some futureproofing for their 2080 Tis and 3090s. They need to sell those ridiculously overpriced 4080s - no matter who they have to step on.

Been using it every game I can and haven't seen any issues in standard game play. The only time I've seen weird artifacts was playing Hogwarts using super-resolution w/ Frame Generation, and no DLSS. Once the frame rate got below 60 FPS, you would start to see some pops, but as long as the framerate is higher via DLSS, it's unnoticeable. The nice thing about the technologies working together is that you're never anywhere near 60 fps (except in Hogsmead, that place could use a heavy dose of optimization). Tim's comments about how you probably wouldn't even notice these things is very true, because I surely haven't noticed. Unless you habitually stare at UI elements instead of what's going on in the game, or just love Spiderman's legs (I'm not here to judge) you'll probably never notice it. I remember when DLSS 2 was new, there were a lot of issues in specific games that used older versions of the tech. @@alargecorgi2199 I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I think they should definitely have updated the dll files to the latest versions but on the other hand, most users aren't tech savvy enough to know about doing that so they're showing what most people will see on their own rigs. I personally think they could just test both the stock versions and the latest versions but I know that would make the testing take much longer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It's kinda like how every cell phone camera comparison uses the camera in auto mode shooting jpeg's when shooting RAW files in manual would really show you the hardware's full capabilities. Why do some people use DLSS Swapper? I'm not being critical or contentious. I'm genuinely curious. Why not just do the ol' "drag and drop" method? Whenever I update the DLSS in a game, I just download the dll file and drop it into the game directory folder, which overwrites the old DLSS file. Why do some people use DLSS Swapper? What advantages does that have?
@AlbertStewart

@@DeadPixel1105 Convenience really. Instead of having to find the files online and manually swap them, you just select the game and version you want and it does it for you. Even if the game you want isn't listed, it's still a much faster way to download all the dll's you want to try.

DLSS Swapper is essential is you're going to use frame gen. Easy enough to swap out for the improved DLL's. That being said, this should be something Nvidia takes care of on the driver side. Hardware Unboxed continues to fail to inform the viewers that VSync + GSync + Frame Generation support has been added to the drivers in November 2022, and you want them to test latency? They're likely misconfiguring their DLSS3 machines to this day and even in this video they claim at 18:25 that "VSync doesn't work" which is a lie. Since mid-November 2022 Miles Morales Game Ready Drivers update, G-Sync + Nvidia Control Panel's VSync + Frame Generation will produce an automatic framerate lock thanks to Reflex recognizing the interaction. The important factor here is to disable ALL FRAMERATE LIMITERS whether in-game, Rivatuner or otherwise to ensure that Reflex can limit the framerate uncontested for the lowest possible latency with Frame Generation.

Article was called "New Game Ready Driver Released For GeForce RTX 4080, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide & More". Find that one and CTRL+F "VSYNC". The only thing they didn't mention is disabling other frame limiters, but I can confirm that Rivatuner screws this up.

testing latency is pointless when it was already shown to be relatively minor. What people don't understand is that DLSS3 make the native latency of a said framerate more noticeable because their is now more frames for the eyes to notice. If you play at 30fps native, you are not gonna "feel" the native latency because what you first gonna "feel/see" is the low frame rate of 30fps. If you add DLSS3, you now "see" 60 fps but still play at the same native 30 fps latency and now you will "feel/see" 60fps while also playing at the same 30 fps native latency. By default, 30 fps native latency has more latency than 60 fps native latency. DLSS3 = 30 fps native latency with 60 fps "visual" so for example, If 30 fps native "latency" is "unplayable" to you, then the game would still be "unplayable" because you are only getting a "visual" boost with DLSS3. And if you don't care about the visual boost, then DLSS3 is pointless to you. Unless you can bypass the "law of physic?", the native framerate is what will mostly dictate the latency.
@Your_Paramour
@Your_Paramour Жыл бұрын
The latency increase should always be roughly 1 frame + the frame generation processing cost. The processing cost is (I'm guessing) probably 1-4 ms, while 1 frame held at 60 fps is 16.67 ms.

18:24 - this is incorrect. V-sync has been working with frame generation since driver 526.98 from November 16, 2022. They key thing to do is to use V-sync forced through NVCP, NOT the in-game implementation. If you use V-sync via the drivers and the game supports reflex, it will also automatically cap the framerate slightly below the maximum refresh rate to evade the massive input lag from V-sync when the refresh rate is maxed out (i.e. 120 FPS on a 120 Hz display). But a framerate cap in the driver is still recommended for games which don't support Reflex. So, the correct settings would be to configure a global profile with: G-sync ON + V-sync ON + framerate cap slightly below max refresh rate, also don't forget to force 16xAF as even AAA games are often terrible in their AF implementation and image quality can suffer significantly when AF is not forced on the driver level.

I'm turning DLSS3 frame gen always on, from 30fps to 60fps. It was great so far, yeah there are some glitches with UI elements but with motion fluidity it provides, it's easy to ignore it. I can set all RT settings to the max, while 4070Ti runs cool and quiet. Input lag is not a issue either. Great tech which will only improve over time.

UI elements being garbled seem kind of unsolvable with the way DLSS works to my understanding without a complete overhaul to how DLSS works or the game engine (and I'm not sure how to do that practically). I don't really think we can fault the gamedevs for those artifacts except in providing a DLSS option in the first place which they probably shouldn't with this type of content. The problem is that those UI elements often don't write to the G-Buffer and are rendered even when they're partially occluded so there's no information there like the depth of the text being drawn for supersampling to interpolate properly. There's a similar issue for objects behind transparent objects. G-Buffers are always single-layer, so to speak. The depth buffer only stores the depth of the frontmost geometry being rendered. even for state-of-the-art engines like UE 5 that support transparency. And multi-layer G-Buffers are too costly to even conceive typically (most production engines use 384+ bits per pixel). But without a multi-layer G-Buffer and also multi-layer frame buffer, a super sampler can't interpolate things across time and space correctly for occluded objects that are still rendered behind or partially behind others, as in the case of UI/HUD elements and things behind transparent surfaces. I think the only solution for games that want to lean heavily on DLSS is to avoid showing things like text and limit transparency as much as possible, favoring more HUD-less designs and far fewer/smaller transparent/translucent surfaces. There's no way I can see uniformly to really correct this problem short of storing multi-layered, multi-depth G-Buffers. DLSS always seemed a bit to me like a dead end. Dead ends and workarounds to existing problems can help for a while and I'm not saying it's obsolete by any stretch, but spatiotemporal SS can't solve these types of issues, so I think for a while we can put in the workarounds and design games with content that works well with DLSS, but it's a type of hardware feature that we need to outgrow as we find software techniques or hardware improvements that make it no longer necessary. It's a band-aid feature to treat symptoms, so to speak, not the root problem which is that we lack the software techniques and hardware to render fast enough at full screen resolution for high-res displays; the future definitely shouldn't require DLSS. As an aside, I've been trying to look at the DLSS SDK for solutions to these types of problems and maybe it's possible to render things like text as a post-process if DLSS can provide an intermediate/interpolated G-Buffer or projection/view matrix (ideally interpolated G-Buffer since we need the temporally interpolated depth information). I am admittedly a novice to DLSS API but I can't seem to find a way to do that still. Even if it could do that, this still provides a huge problem for 3D objects behind other transparent/translucent 3D objects. And there's still a need to completely change some pipelines to even do this properly. DLSS is far from a solution that "just works".

Is this the best way to get more performance? I wonder if foveated rendering would be possible with PC monitors. It seems to work a treat on the PSVR 2.0. Granted the FOV is a lot bigger with that so your peripheral area on a monitor is going to be a lot smaller but it would surely be far better to have lower quality rendering in areas out of your focus. Of course it would also require eye tracking hardware and software which I guess is a bigger stumbling block.

Videos aren't fully representative because of the nature of Frame Generation which most reviewers never talk about when doing video reviews for it: a video is using temporal encoding. That means data persists over multiple frames. The problem here is that Frame Generation FUNDAMENTALLY does not have any data persistence. The generated frame disappears as soon as it is displayed. This is almost impossible to convey in a video because at full speed playback, we're experiencing data bleed due to encoding that doesn't exist when viewing Frame Generation in real life.

Yeah it's funny, from a purely mechanical level, ui elements should be the easiest things to interpolate, static 2d images that only need to move via simple translation. My guess is though, since it's an AI technique, you don't have 100% control on the patterns that the AI finds. Which is why AI image generation can occasionally come up with strange and unpredictable results. A hybrid approach would make the most sense then, but that could be rather challenging getting the AI to ignore the UI while applying more simple techniques to interpolate it and then correctly recombining the two, all while not increasing latency.

No not really , it doesn't require super high frame rates ( although some limitations are less obvious with it ) it's mostly for cpu limited scenarios where dlss 2 cannot help . For example , the witcher 3 with RT on , it has horrible cpu limits when enabled and is very demanding , dlss3 is a life saver here and enables a 60 fps experience that may not be possible without it and the input lag isn't an issue in a game like it , cyberpunk 2077 is another game where dlss3 works well , it has fixed many of the issues and allows for 60 fps with rt maxed out , same for a plague tale requiem . Another game that doesn't have dlss3 but would benefit from it is the callisto protocol because it's demanding and again has weird cpu limitations. So while i don't have a 40 series card to test it , from what i've seen i think dlss 3 is great and can help alleviate cpu issues and increase perfomance , although it requires some more time to be improved because it still has some issues

DLSS3 is a game changer in Cyberpunk, less so in games where it adds a lot of latency

not a game changer for me in Cyberpunk. I have a 4070 Ti and I prefer to play with DLSS 2, the latency is much better even if the framerate is lower (60 - 70 FPS on Ultra details).

@@ruxandy do you have G-Sync/G-Sync Compatible display? Are you sure you setup your system properly? You need to turn off all frame limiters in DLSS3 games. Disable especially the in-game limiters and third party limiters (Rivatuner, etc.). Keep VSync turned off in-game! Turn VSync ON in Nvidia Control Panel instead and Reflex will cap your framerate for you, resulting in minimal input latency increase. Reflex would fight against other frame limiters if you didn't disable them.

@@TheDravic I have a Freesync 1440p display and not using any frame limiters. Also, I'm playing this game with vsync off (and have tested DLSS3 in the same conditions). With vsync "on" it's worse. All in all, I don't like the latency that DLSS3 introduces in any game (and, mind you, I'm not a picky guy when it comes to latency, but DLSS3 is still too much even for me). 🙂

@@ruxandy Freesync is not a thing with Nvidia cards, instead it will be called GSync Compatible in Nvidia Control Panel. So if you are using GSync Compatible display and don't use frame limiters you are doing it VERY wrong anyway. I can't help you too much in YT comments as this would require linking to BlurBusters Gsync guide to explain why you SHOULD force VSync globally through Nvidia Control Panel and why you SHOULD use frame limiters everywhere. You can google search it instead. The thing about that guide is Frame Generation didn't exist then so it doesn't mention what I am saying: disable frame limiters in any Frame Generation games specifically. Then let Reflex cap framerate for you. VSync should be turned on in NVCP as always.

@@TheDravic dear friend, I have been gaming for 34 years, trust me when I tell you that I do know what I'm doing. ;-) I do use frame limiters, just not with Cyberpunk, because the latency is very good without any frame limiting. Also, DLSS3 is known for the heavy latency penalty (which is even mentioned by Tim in this exact video), and there is currently no known workaround for it. Between 70 FPS with DLSS2 and 100 FPS with DLSS3, I choose the former.

They should introduce this to 2k and 3k cards. As it stands you don't really _need_ dlss3 if you have a high end cpu and a 4080 plus on , say 1440p, but maybe you would want it on 4k. Older cards would benefit much more.

The problem is those optical flow hardware inside those 20 and 30 series. Nvidia improve the optical flow hardware in 40 series specifically with frame generation in mind. And even that we still see weird artifacting.

Other people in the comments have noted that the new release muted _every_ light source. Can't say personally, I haven't played the game.

I have played 15 hours of Hogwarts legacy using dlss 3. Never noticed the UI flickering issue until you pointed it out in this video. Even at 09:04 when you explicitly point it out, I really can't see any flickering whatsoever. That's how irrelevant this issue is for me. As for fps, I'm getting 100-120 fps at 1440p ultra rt with my 4070 ti, 5600x and 32 gb ram. I'm very happy with the tech to say the least.

Nvidia should release official software to update DLSS in games, maybe through GeForce Experience.
