For those looking to achieve DLAA level of quality with Ray Reconstruction, try using DLDSR (Nvidia Control Panel - NVCP) so you fake a higher resolution display than yours, then, in-game, choose a DLSS mode that is equal or close as possible to your native resolution (to put into perspective: if your display is 1440p, choose DLDSR 2.25X, which is 4K, and choose DLSS Quality, which will render the game at 1440p). Here are some of the most common resolutions and their respective render resolution using each mode of DLSS: 3840x2160p (4K/UHD): Quality: 2560x1440p Balance: 2227x1253p Performance: 1920x1080p Ultra Perf: 1280x720p 2560x1440p (2.5K/QHD): Quality: 1707x960p Balance: 1485x835p Performance: 1280x720p Ultra Perf: 853x480p 1920x1080p (2K/FHD): Quality: 1280x720p Balance: 1114x626p Performance: 960x540p Ultra Perf: 640x360p

How sharp are reflections supposed to be? It kind of depends on the texture of the reflecting surfaces. Since this generally isn't well defined, it can be hard to say which reflections are more accurate, and trying to say what looks better will always be somewhat subjective. At 12:15, the floor, if it were real, would maybe have a mirror finish, or maybe not. The images are different, but I can't really say one looks better or more right. I think the biggest improvement that is quantifiable and undeniable is in any reduction of temporal delay in the denoising; that was needed, as it is an aspect of RT that can be worse than non-RT, reducing the overall benefit of RT.
@ravenoftheredsky
@ravenoftheredsky 8 ай бұрын
Maybe the accuracy of the ray is a better way to anticipate the improvement. Devs can artistically interpret what to do with the enhanced integrity of lighting from there, and diffuse the reflection to give the complexity or subtlety that best supports world immersion
@oginer
@oginer 8 ай бұрын
The one on the left is not right. When you have a reflective surface that's not a perfect mirror, the blurriness of the reflection increases with the distance of the reflected objects (and because of how RT intrinsically works, RT simulates this correctly). If you look at that image, the reflection of the red billboard is all equally blurry. So the blurriness here is not because the surface has a more diffuse reflection (edit: if it was a diffuse reflection, the bottom of the billboard would have a more mirror-like reflection, as it's closer to the floor, and progressively getting more blurry and even less visible).
@RavTokomi
@RavTokomi 8 ай бұрын
This is something I have always had in mind. For example a reflective walkway would be dirty where people walked more often, water isn't always perfect still or clear. But taking all that into account would mostly fall on the developers and artists to take into account when creating the world and effects. I think it will improve and evolve and RT becomes the default for new game development.
@Davinmk
@Davinmk 8 ай бұрын
the left the one on the left is clearly unrealistic, objectively
@InnuendoXP
@InnuendoXP 8 ай бұрын
It's less how sharp or blurry the reflection is, it's more how accurately any such light distortion represents the texture of the surface the light is reflecting from. A smudgy look doesn't automatically become accurate just because the surface is rough.

HWUB mainly just focuses on evaluating the "performance" of different technology, with benchmarks, tests etc. whereas Anandtech dedicates quite a large chunk of its coverage to actually discussing the design and underlying principles of those technologies. @alexatkin 8 ай бұрын
Its completely on the GPU, though I do wonder if it might reduce CPU usage as denoising and upscaling is handled in a single job whereas before surely each denoiser would need to be setup by the CPU? Either way its going to be hard to tell on CPU given CP 2.0 is supposedly more multi-threaded than older versions.

Nice video Hardware Unboxed. Everyone's always talking about not being able to have super high FPS with RT or RR. For a single-player game you only really need to achieve 60 frames per second to get a nice experience. Plus, if people used dlss balance mode that usually still gives a very nice picture quality and you get even more fps. I have an RTX 4090 so I am not talking from poor man's ignorance. I have an RTX 2070 and 2080 t.i. also so I know how these things look and run.

Tim, I appreciate your very thorough analysis. Reflection quality seems an issue limited to when a user has a comparison image or remembers that specific image with a different DLSS version. In other words, a reflection may look fine if one doesn’t know what that reflection might look like otherwise. For instance, the billboard with “foreign body” reflected on the marble is not an issue if I do not know what the real world reflectivity of the marble should be in that scenario as marble finishes are not identical, especially after wear being a city sidewalk.

Imo its a matter of art style. Thats generally a funny thing with RT, it makes lighting often look different, maybe more complex, but that doesnt actually mean "better" in many situations. It depends on individual circumstances. For me, I directly applied the HDRmod to 2077 (originally it doesn't support HDR; I used HDRmod to simulate HDR on an SDR display). Then, I set it to 1080p, all options at the highest except for the lowest level of volumetric clouds and fog. I used DLSS on 'Ultra Performance' and enabled ray tracing. After that, I used a mod to change the number of rays and reflections to 3 (originally they were all set to 2). At this point, turning on and off DLSS 3.5 makes a noticeable difference; there are more details.(rtx3060laptop)

My main issue with a lot of these new reflection techniques, while they might look nice in a bubble, it doesn't look realistic. Devs seem to make every material look really glossy, just so they can use these new techniques, or they make shadows way too sharp. When I walk outside however, pretty much nothing actually looks like that. Shadows often are blurry and a lot of metarials just don't reflect that much light. Something I would love to see as an alternative to RT is Screen Space Reflections that can extend beyond the screen space. Say you're gaming at 3840x2160p, then instead of having 2160p/1080p reflections that get cut off by the edge of the camera, have the SSR calculations based off a secondary wider FOV/aspect ratio like 2560x1920p/1920x1440 that can sample off screen content with specific bias toward things above the top of frame (where SSR breakdown is the most obvious) It would obviously be more performance intensive than standard SSR, but nowhere near the level of RT and universally compatible to boot. Then as the angle gets more acute blend the transition from SSR to cubemap to prevent the very obvious "wipe" effect as the camera moves I long for the day when all machines can easily run full ray traced everything without breaking a sweat as it's always accurate and lightens the load on developers too.. no baking, fake hidden light sources, cube map trickery etc. But I still feel that day is a long way off, unless someone can implement that reprojection system shown by 2kliksphilip and LTT - maybe then I could go back to low fps

You can play RT fine enough to get the point and there are also enough videos out there. There is just not that much of a benefit of RT unless you look for it - but sure tell yourself that you have super high immersion because of some silly reflection and lighting which nobody really cares about when *actually* gaming. This is why we get more and more games with mediocre game mechanics, generic writing and lazy/bland design (cyberpunk is the best example ...). People are too busy to repeat GPU marketing claims instead of actually playing.

The hope about devs being more liberal with RT effects usage might be a bit misplaced i think. What i gathered from DF interview with Nvidia about RR is that as it effectively replaces regular DLSS and denoiser it also, unlike modern DLSS solution, requires a deeper game integration on a per game basis. This is essentially a bit of a bad news because it ofc means that how often we will see RR in games will entirely depend on dev's will to integrate it and Nvidia's effort to promote it. I suspect there will be less or no success stories like recent DLSS community mods for games like Starfield or SW Survivor.

@@pmmm712011 DLSS 3.5 is not game specific in the way DLSS 1.0 (a model trained on that game) was. But it does need to be implemented at a very specific point in the rendering pipeline so that denoising and upscaling can be done at the same time, so it presumably needs its own renderer implemented in the game. As such, this is not something that likely can be fixed as in a game not designed for it, denoising is not happening at the point where upscaling is, and 3.5 is designed to do both things at the same time. This also likely reduces latency and VRAM, as you're just running a single model. This is even more important if you consider frame generation is already yet another AI model, you can't just keep adding models indefinitely as each one will use up VRAM and add latency.

How does RR help owners of older nvidia gpus, if you need a totally overpriced high end gpu to achieve acceptable fps? This sounds like alluring old customers into trying out the tech, overhyping them once again and convince them to just upgrade their high end gpu once again shortly after. I bet dlss 3.5 is not the only a.i. technique, that can be enabled on older nvidia gpus but frame gen as well, which according to nvidia was only possible on rtx 40+ series gpus.

I've got no stuttering and I haven't noticed any frame drops regardless of scenario. I'm using an RTX 4070 Ti coupled with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800x and I'd probably sit around 5-10 FPS without all of this tech if I tried to run it at a native 4K resolution. It's still rough around the edges, but Ray Reconstruction fixed most of the glaring issues that kept me from using Path Tracing during actual gameplay. And for those having issues with Frame Generation like I initially did: I was able to fix the input latency and screen tearing issues using the following Nvidia Control Panel settings for the game: Max Frame Rate: 57 (60hz screen minus 3), Low Latency Mode: Ultra and Vertical Sync: On.

It'd appear the way the games try to mitigate the issue is just avoiding light diffusion (and refraction) by having incredibly flat and glossy surfaces, so it'd take fewer rays (and bounces) to approximate the reflections. Maybe it's just me but I feel like there needs to be a LOT more work put into materials and defining their reflection properties if they want this stuff to actually be realistic. As is it just seems like everything is dialed to create a reflection that looks like a mirror or wet surface or something. Things like the angles, material properties, environmental conditions, etc are simply not taken into account. Look at a pool on a windy day, vs a cloudy day, vs a sunny but still day and reflections will look completely different (apply that to puddles of water, oceans, a fountain, etc). Same goes for dust, dirty, etc on surface, windows, marble floors, or whatever else. None of that seems to exist today which just makes it all look completely unnatural to me. Sure, it looks really "high res" but just a AI generated high resolution fake image. There are literally examples in this video where you are in a dark area and a floor looks like it's a mirror from lights FAR away which simply would never look like that in real life, not even close.

The problem is that rough reflections are so much harder to get right with raytracing as you will need far more rays per pixels. That’s why I’m current games most surfaces have a high roughness cutoff. Callisto protocol is one of few games I know of that has very low roughness cutoff for rt reflections and it looks incredible
@Jossages
@Jossages 8 ай бұрын
Angles, material properties, and sometimes environmental conditions (it depends) ARE taken into account. Not all reflections are mirror (e.g. 8.29 in vid, or the dry asphalt etc). Also keep in mind they aren't going to modify assets for the different rendering paths, assets are likely authored mainly for the raster or RT modes first - if they lower roughness values to get a certain look with the SSR, it will look too reflective with proper reflections. In addition to what the other guy commented.

Besides technical limitatoins, and there being a lot of work left, I think a big problem is that to get the perfect effect, you have to make the game with raytracing in mind. Current games have most people play without raytracing, so thats where they put in most the effort. If you can skip the legacy lighting, im sure we'd get way more meaningful RT implementations. But I dont see that coming for a while. Funny thing is, Nvidias 'advantage' in RT is actually the problem, because it means AMD/Intel users demand that the game works without. And frankly, most Nvidia users as well. Because frankly, even Nvidia GPUs are pretty garbage at RayTracing. Its very basic effects and the framerate still gets crippled, the only solution is bandaids like very powerful GPUs and performance optimizers like DLSS. Being better than AMD isnt a big acchievement if youre still this bad.

We have at *least* 3 more generations of cards before ray tracing actually becomes relevant if this is the performance right now.

The psycho graphic mode is just reflections by SSR that are very demanding (for the little graphic improvement it offers). So no, the "psycho" graphic setting is not ray tracing. In fact, this graphic setting consumes more than the ray tracing ultra itself (No path tracing, only ray tracing ultra) PS: In summary, even if you activate ray reconstruction with the psycho graphic setting, there is no improvement in the reflections generated by SSR (obviously there is an improvement in the reflections generated by path tracing)

Haven't watched the video yet but they've said in interviews that it can in theory be used for non-path-traced RT effects, just that they don't really recommend it because it's an AI model (pretty much a matrix multiplication) so it comes with the same cost as when used for full path tracing (about 2ms on a 4090 IIRC), and this tech makes full path tracing much more viable since you don't need as many samples to get good results, so they recommend just doing that instead since it significantly simplifies the rendering process and results in better image quality.

3D generalist here. A sharper reflection is not always indicative of a more "physically accurate" or "higher resolution" reflection. Reflective materials have roughness, which in general has the effect of making the reflections appear blurrier. This simulates surfaces that are microscopically rough, scattering the reflected light in a way more similar to diffuse reflections. These rough reflections require more samples to resolve well (without noise), and therefore will in this context lean more heavily on denoisers for clean up. So in the context of this example, this could explain why the newer version is in some cases producing ghosting where previously it did not. It may be attempting to reconstruct a wider range of roughness values (which is good in theory in terms of accuracy) than the old version, but makes more frequent use of denoisers as a result, creating new artefacts. Worth noting as well - the materials and their textures throughout the game were likely created, checked and signed off using what are now deprecated versions of the in-game render pipeline. They may not necessarily be artistically optimized with the current rendering pipeline, through no fault of the artists. This is cutting edge tech with a lot of moving parts! The 12:15 example looks to me like the floor is made of a completely different material. The diffuse marbling detail looks gone altogether, across the entire surface. This could well be a bug - perhaps the textures for this material are being read in the wrong color space...

I don't get this "always bitching" attitude of people like you. Yeah, developers could have just provide us with inferior raster rendering, so people like you would be happy that you can at least get 200 FPS at native! They literally have came up with rendering technique from the future and find a way, how to make it playable thanks to smart AI solutions even tho current-gen HW alone is not sufficient for it - but hey, someone will start bitching that it's bad because we need "fake frames" to have it playable.
