Its interesting to me that we talk about the Leica Look and the way it tends to capture the moment with an old fashioned yet always contemporary 35mm view, yet many of the most inspirational and historic pictures taken, several of which you have shown here, have been taken with a Hasselblad. There is something magical about the square format, the effort and time it takes to create an image and the way Hasselblad V series technology and Zeiss glass luminously capture a scene. Great that Hasselblad have reimagined this process for digital and brought the experience Back to the Present. Thank you Hugh for yet another review that inspires the viewer to think differently. Now where is the $6,399 I need?

The correct way of holding and triggering a Hasselblad 500CM is with your left index finger - not your right! This is perhaps the most common mistake people do with the Hassie, a Rolleiflex you do trigger with the right index finger but not a Hasselblad. Hold the camera in your left palm. The index finger on the shutter release. You right hand controls shutter speed, focus and winding. I haven’t used the new digital camera but imagine the selector button could comfortably be reached with your left middle finger.

@@3BMEP Glad to be of help! You really do get used to operating the release with your left hand. And once you do, it is far more effective than having to juggle the camera between different grips in order to wind the camera. To anyone reading this I would recommend practicing without film. You will soon notice how fluid and well handling a Hasselblad is when operated with "the left hand grip". When shooting portraits you can wind the camera quickly if you have the fold out crank. And the EV lock button, which locks together the aperture and shutter speed, is only comfortably operated with your right hand. The ergonomics of the Hasselblad are really laid out in such a way to accommodate the left hand grip. So training to feel comfortable with it is sure to transform your shooting experience. Thank you for a great show!

@@tor2919 ...and with the ring finger of your left hand you push the mirror up to lock it before the shot. I never understood why one would use mirror lock up when handheld. Do you happen to know?
@tor2919
@tor2919 2 жыл бұрын
I typically only use mirror lock up when on tripod and using a cable release, but sometimes I use it handheld when doing portrait. You can ‘trick’ the subject you’re taking the photo when the mirror pre fires, sometimes the person then relaxes with a more natural smile, which is when I would then trigger the actual shutter in the lens :)

What a great way of reminding us what a state of mind photography is... As somebody who's been doing it since I hoarded all those S&H Green Stamps to get that Kodak in the 60s I very much enjoyed listening to you remind us that in all the flashing bells and whistles of the latest gear..... Heritage plays a part.. if for nothing else, reminding us of the images that we've seen in the past that makes us want to go out and do our own.

I just love how a Hasselblad looks and feels, how it makes me inspired to make photos. It’s not about numbers or specs. It’s a tool, and the photographer is making the image, not the camera. The modular 907 is just a thing of beauty together with the V system.

Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Star Trek had excited the imagination, Lost in Space the same. We always got the shows well behind the US and for me America was the promised land. My father listened to Alastair Cooke on the radio and everything seemed to come together. I remember it vividly. The best of America. For me it has always been great. Yea it has its issues but there is so much promise and opportunity. Something you all need to hold on to. As day turns to night daylight always comes around. I hope it is now the darkest period before dawn for you all.

It is an interesting idea, the relationship between history and inspiration. As I get older I find my memory of a personal event is linked strongly with photographs of the event, it is if I only remember the photographs and not the events themselves. In a larger context we as a society remember events only through the images and movies of the event, especially as those who would actually remember are lost to the ravages of time. I am not sure how this explains my absolute love affair with my 500 c/m. Who’s ergonomics, functioning, image quality and “giant” negative seem completely matched to my interests and photographic purpose and style. But somehow it does. Great video. Charlie

Just re-visiting this excellent video, Hugh. I noticed you holding the 500CM, and also how you found the 907x shift button/shutter button placement a bit awkward. I agree completely. I too hold my 500CM that way (supported in left hand with right hand on shutter button). But I recently noticed in the Hasselblad manual they recommend holding the camera in the left hand and triggering the shutter with the left hand index finger, keeping the right hand free for winding on. Applying the same logic to the 907x makes that shift button/shutter button combination placement much more sensible. I still prefer to hold my 500CM with right hand index finger on the shutter though, as I suspect many do.

Bravo, Hasselblad for the masterstroke of producing a new medium format camera in the form of a Superwide with compatibility with the AF lenses AND the rest of the V-system, all in one. I love this, with the internal battery and only a fraction of the Mk 1 price too. The crop factor on the V-System produces the usual workarounds and changes the effective focal length of the lenses of course and there is the monumental headache of that great big exposed sensor every time you take the back off. A new dark slide facility is surely essential. But this is a superb addition to the Hasselblad range.

We share the same taste in 'most favorite picture of all time. A while back I did a bit of digging - Arnold used a large format camera - but whilst I can find no information on the camera he used - the original contact sheet from which the crop is taken is almost a 'square' taken in landscape orientation - so it is a very big relevance when we are talking Hass, legacy and the new 907x. Firstly, back in the old days we had a choice (120 film) we could shoot square and we could shoot un-square (???)! but f Victor Hasselblad designed the original square format for aerial photography after famously being given a 'captured Leica' and upon being asked if he could copy said "No, but I can make it better!" and the 6x6 with a leaf shutter was born. The simple fact is the camera you choose, and in particular MPX' count does not count for much in the real world, it really doesn't - whats important is that you achieve the 'picture' you wanted - or the true (not the contrived and often overused) definition of fine art (lower case on purpose). So many people lose the (ahem) focus. A camera is a tool. Just that. I now have the 907x - it is quirky, different and thats what makes it special - because you feel special when you are using it. You will take care over your compositions - you will take the time to appreciate not just it, but what it represents. The fact that it is packed full of interesting things like focus stack and wifi won't appeal to everyone but what appeals to me is how as a photographer it makes me feel. And how it makes me feel is this. I know the camera, without hardly any effort at all is the least important part of the photographic process - which is what the HAsselblads of old were all about - set and forget and concentrate on your subject. - Nice review and thoughts on this as always and as expected If anyone is interested I can offer some advice on lots of little quirks including the 'finder' and the 'grip'. Have a super day everyone. Stay focused!!

Same sensor, so it boils down to personal preference.insofar as the sensor in both is also laid out the same way (wider than taller) as long as your landscape work is mostly horizontal, the differences between the two will be largely insignificant - EXCEPT that the X1DII has an EVF in addition to its rear screen, so I’d have to give it the edge.

I feel like Hasselblad took one from Fuji’s philosophy on this one 👌🏼
@SamLucas26

Not in form but in philosophy. The concept of creating a very analogue experience while having the freedom of shooting digital. That’s something Fuji has focused on quite a bit and I’m pumped that somebody like Hasselblad with such a rich heritage has created something on a similar philosophy of marrying old and new

Sorry, been using hasselblad for 20 years professionally back in film age... it was all about square format when you do not rotate the camera... this back is not square... and operation for vertical format r just crazy... may be for video camera... just can’t avoid shoot vertical or cropping horizontal to vertical...

Thoughtful analysis of those very interesting Hasselblad options. I was on the fence for a while but in the end opted for the GFX-50R's ergonomics and (yes) price point. But those Hassy shutter lenses have their appeal! What I most appreciated though, is that bit about the upcoming presidential election. Just re-watched Back to the Future with the whole family a week ago. That exact scene you included made mit sit up and pay attention: very appropriate to include it here. We are living in an upside down world.

Well....this would be great IF it were a full frame medium format sensor. But it's just the same exact sensor that is already present in the x1D, the PhaseOne 150, 250, 350,... the Pentax 645Z and the GFX 50R and 50S. So it's a pretty considerable crop, especially for the 500C/M or any other V-System camera. The 80mm 2.8 gets cropped to what a 100mm lens would look like and a 60mm would be the only lens to deliver a "standard" focal length. And there's only the 60mm 3.5 around... not a particularly fantastic lens and not that wide spread. Also: with the V-System the usable image in the viewfinder gets very very very very small and - it's not even square. Hasselblad needs to come up with a big, square sensor otherwise the whole V-System just isn't 'worth' it in 2020. It would make more sense to shoot on film and then do high-res drum scans of the best images.

I like your videos, but your montage of photographers detracted because several of the images were not taken with a Hasselblad. Penn and Avedon were more wedded to their Rollei’s, and Arbus settled on a Mamiya for her most famous work, including an image you showed. Otherwise, keep up the good work.
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 3 жыл бұрын
Certainly not my intent - and where I knew the particular image was not done with a Hasselblad, I noted it. Not always easy to discern - that Arbus photo in particular was identified on the web page from which I took it as specifically shot with Hasselblad, but I’m perfectly willing to believe it was done so in error. Thanks for pointing it out.

Your new business name should now be "Three Blind Men (Who Can't Breathe Properly Through A Mask), And An Elephant". NASA says they can't go back to the moon because someone lost the details written down on paper and they won't be able to duplicate what they used to know because of that... but they are off to Mars though... NASA stands for: Never A Straight Answer. Raise your hand if you believe anything NASA and their kind tell you! The short bus will take you home after the test.
