We haul out for some thruster repairs and as always we try to give you some in depth detail about how we do this. The thruster is a Max Power thruster CT165. After this we do what we do best; get sailing again.

It sounds like you have to run your thruster often in certain conditions to keep them moving freely. Another valuable lesson. Interesting way to give a neighbor a gift, lol.

perhaps that might help, though I am not certain that is what caused the issue. All learning though not a cheap way to learn!

I have 2x the CT225. Bow is broken and it makes a sound as a jet (airplane). So with your explaination I understand the way how it is build. I guess on my side (from the sound I hear) the gearbox is broken. But I open the engine part now with confidence. (have to haul out if the gearbox really is broken and it's not the hard-rubber one between engine and gearbox)

Something to keep an eye on. Sailing Zatara posted a video about their Honda motor at the end of Sept. I think. Apparently Honda is having problems with the oil pan bolts stretching, allowing seawater into the motor

Loving the videos James Looking at putting a deposit down soon for a neel 51, so natrually have been watching alot of neel clips. You should get down to south east Queensland Australia when the time is right!

DAMN!!! That's one beautiful vessel...mind you, you have a beautiful crew mate soooo beauty attracts beauty. By the way, if you check out 'Sailing into Freedom', Peter (aka Plukky) did a carb repair of taking his whole carb apart to check and clean it. Very informational video, like what you just did...only much smaller. lol

You're an inspiration! Would you recommend as part of a regular checklist to work the bow thruster every so often just to discourage the growth? Just a second or two in each direction daily?

Hi Klemeq, Yes not a bad idea and its quite easy with a dive kit to take the propellers off and clean the tunnel. So yep, all should be added to Maintainance schedule. One reason why it's not good to leave a boat sitting in a marina not working....

So i get from the video that it is a good idea to clean the tunnel at least once a year, Or to place a mesh at the entrance of the tunnel. I wonder if the the OEM can install a duo system for redundancy, if that exists. How was the handling of the Trimaran without this device? I know in a 60 foot yatch is very defficult to maniever, u need two people at least.

Clean once a month with a spatchula. No mesh needed.

James, In lieu of a proper and regular cleaning do you think it would be worth cycling the bow thruster once in a while to prevent growth? It's probably tough to say without knowing exactly what the problem was.

It's hard to say what it was. But every other neel 51 I met with the same thruster has failed. Think it probably should have been a recall on those particular batch of thrusters.

It's it hard to find a yard with a travel lift wide enough? Are you using hard or soft bottom paint?

I hear the thrusters on the 51 are designed to be extremely difficult to maintain as you have shown. Question, can one do without thrusters on the 51? Is there an alternative to manufacturer Installed thrusters? Maybe after market thrusters that can be externally mounted? Ones that can be easily installed and maintained without having to pull the vessel?

Have not heard that myself, though I do not think it is any more awkward than your standard thruster to maintain. I am wondering why anyone would make it deliberately difficult to maintain something? For comedy perhaps?

@@paulhellewell8762 Not so sure Paul, As almost never do the boats return to the shipyard. In any event, I hope this video helps people to consider if they really need a thruster on a smaller boat. The Neel 51, it makes sense.
