Dear guys, love your vids, about the repair, never use chopped mat with epoxy, they don’t bond together very well, water will get there very quick and patch can come off as the bonding is weak. Chopped mat bonds only with polyester or vinylester resin. Only use type E fiberglass for that type of repair with epoxy. Also if you notice water in your composite, you must dry the laminate before repair, an easy way is to use a small vacuum pump and with a suction cup fitting put it over the hole you just drilled. Let it run for a couple of days, the water will evaporate fast under vacuum. If pump is not available let it dry on the sun as much as you can open. Here is how I suggest you to do it: 1 - taper down your walls for about an inch or so where is possible 2 - buy a methacrylate glue (always keep it in stock in your boat Methacrylate glue bonds very good metal to composite even on dirty surface) The glue usually comes with a nozzle that premix as it comes out, try to push the glue around the rudder shaft. With a spatula coated for about 1/8 of an inch, and put back the core you just removed in the same place. 3-once dry (10 min about) start to laminate layer by layer with type E and epoxy, each patch has to be size of the missing layer and as you fill the hole the patch became bigger and bigger until you are flash with the rudder surface. You should always keep type E fiberglass, Methacrylate glue, and epoxy in your boat. Get a small vacuum pump if you want to do a structural repair it comes very handy. You have made so many helpful and informative videos for the Oceanis 40 that complete the most challenging jobs that most folks rely on good boatyard riggers and mechanics to address. Let's see now, you did the engine shaft cutlass bearing, mounts and alignment, installed the Hydrovane, solar, wind genset, and now the rudder repair and bearing sleeve. Pretty amazing.. I'm sure you have saved a lot of dough by performing the work yourself while ensuring that it is done right (Sam, you obviously know what your are doing as well as any mechanic I've seen..) You are such an inspiration for all of us who own a Beneteau Oceanis from 40' to 50' of our vintage (2007-2012). You've even inspired me to drop 20 pounds so that I can more easily get access to my rudder post without getting stuck! For those of us who own the 40' in particular, it really makes us love the boat even more and not be too afraid of major ocean sailing. We completed the trip to the Bahamas, next is Annapolis, then the BVI's. Thanks a bunch! :-)

I think that all of the planning, thought & pre-effort is what made the time on the hard work so well. So glad that the Swedish gentleman was so willing to assist in the rudder stock rebuild- what a lifesaver! But, a ton of hard work, sweat equity & now a rock solid rudder assembly should allow for a smoother passage across the Pacific! I really can't believe how smoothly the poop chute through hull went. Just Saying! No one, and I mean no one gets away from a completely crappy poop through hull. Replacing the hose 2 years ago made a HUGE difference! Hahahaha

We live 6 hrs away from where she is at, and I work 6 day/week, we got to sleep two nights on her and then hauled her out for a bottom job. It should get splashed tomorrow if all goes well. Hey guys great to see that you made it to Fiji. I was a little concerned they may have closed the blue lane due to the worsening covid situation. Unfortunately I suspect you won't be able to enter NZ but I guess you will be able to return to Aussie. On the subject of rudders you may be aware of a Beneteau that lost it's rudder mid pacific due to a short on a wire running back to electronics near the wheel. The current was running down the rudder shaft and in to the sea resulting in electrolysis of the shaft that was so bad the rudder snapped off. Something to look out for. Good luck for the future.

Hi, we went out also in Cariacou some years ago. Living on the boat was not so easy since there were no showers or toilets on the warf, even getting some water was difficult… but one for us important question: why did you change this tru hull ? Our boat is now eleven years (same as yours bit 43) and we never changed it since it is synthetic and we did not sea the need to change this one. On the contrary we changed all other tru hulls

Pretty informative one (non sailor here). May I ask where does the water (if any) in the “bilge” would come from (mast? Thru-holes?) and how often do you guys pump it out? Safe winds (or whatever I should have wished to you :-)

Hi guys. My GF and i just purchased a 2007 Benteau Oceanis 43. Im looking for the part number for the rudder bearings. I understand the benetil 43 and 40 have the same rudder, but I cannot find anywhere on their parts website a part number or diagram depicting the (bronze top and bottom) bearings. Do you have the part number for the bearing that you installed in this video? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Ian

What procedures do you follow for polishing the folding prop, looks amazing00. ? Do you use an angle grinder with nylon polishing pad to remove the barnacles first? Thanks in advance.....I've got a folding prop on a new (used) boat I'm buying in UK, so that's a job I've got very soon. 🙂

I hate to worry you guys, but that rudder is already fully water logged and is going to be big problems in the near future. Even if you completely open one full side and let it dry for months, it still won’t dry out. That means that the holes you also drilled on the bottom are going to do basically nothing….
