I think they wanted Laurie to get infected by Michael's evil to intentionally end her story in a tragic way so that even when Michael dies he still wins.

Don’t know why these re-quel trilogies can’t seem to stick the landing (Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Halloween, etc). You’d think they’d have a solid ending in mind before resurrecting a classic franchise

The original ending fits with the franchise up to that point: Halloween 4 (Laurie died off screen), Halloween Resurrection (Laurie dies), and Halloween 2 from 2009 (Laurie becomes the Shape and then dies). I'm glad for the ending we got. For me, you either need the hero to win in the end, or, if you're going to go bleak, then give me some humor, social commentary, etc. to go along with the bleakness.

I understand and appreciate what they were going for with Corey, but there was not enough movie to do enough justice to his story, Laurie, Allison, Lindsay, and Frank. They owed it to us to continue the characters we have been following for two movies, and instead they were relegated to the sidelines. Here is my fan-fic attempt to fix this: Opening - Keep the Corey opening as it is. This was an incredible shock in the theater and a great movie going experience. You need to find a way to back-fill the narrative of the previous characters, so details on that below. Laurie - Instead of using Laurie's book as the framing device, she is in group therapy (mandatory due to her being arrested after leading the vengeance mob that resulted in burning down Michael's old home). All the chapters of her book are instead sessions where she is talking about the work she has been doing to move on. They can use that to tell the flashbacks from the book about how she went off the deep end, hit rock bottom. She was very resistant for years, but finally started doing well and is now trying to work through her grief and make good with Ali. Ali - She was part of the group therapy at one point, but stopped going because she couldn't handle it. She's trying to piece her life back together in her own way, and trying to stay connected with Laurie. But she is also resentful of how Laurie is able to move on from the death of her parents. Lindsay - Was also part of the group therapy in the beginning, but found her happiness and serving as Laurie's main beacon of hope that you can move on. Corey - Was made to join the group therapy as part of his probation, and while he made some progress, the town's reaction to him never let him move on. Once his probation completed, he did his best to become a recluse and not get in anyone's way. With this setup, Laurie has a reason to reconnect with Corey when she bumps into him at the gas station. A lot of the rest of the story can proceed as it was in the movie. But we get a lot more context for the whole cast and their actions make more sense. This also gives the chance for the trilogy to show a mental health professional who hasn't gone batshit psycho crazy, which you'd think would be important for a trilogy whose main themes are around trauma and moving on.

Being a super fan I learned a lot from this. I had no idea so much was written and not in the movie. At midnight last night on Halloween I started watching Halloween Kills again. I think if it was edited better it could be the best Halloween movie. It's all over the place at the beginning and it makes more sense if it has different writers for each scene. I feel like maybe this could be the problem with all of them. The scenes don't fit together well in the sequence they are in. Thanks for the info

Drawing the parallels between Corey and the general conditions in the country was insight I think I needed more of in the movie itself. Corey's journey was like a reversal of the expected trope wherein the member of society unfairly ostracized redeems himself in the eyes of the community, and the movie probably could have benefited from making it more explicit that it was in fact that ostracizing and treatment which ultimately opened the door for Corey to be infected by the Shape. I liked this movie overall, it was more good than bad, bolstered in no small part by it's stellar soundtrack, but it's sitting at the bottom of the 2018 trilogy for me. Anyway, this was an excellent review and hearing the portions the book fills in definitely helped. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

I love Halloween Ends, when i came out of the theater i felt confused on it and when i rewatched it on peacock i liked it and when i rewatched it when the steelbook was released i loved it. As much as this trilogy is a mess i really enjoyed them all even though Halloween Ends doesn't really connect smoothly from Kills like how 2018 goes into Kills i do like the trilogy even if i think taking the end of Ends and adding it to Halloween Kills would've been a more smooth ending and would make the trilogy Halloween 1978, Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills. I do wonder how it would've gone if Ends was the same night of 2018/Kills.

Happy Halloween Kylie! This was a better trilogy than the actual new trilogy haha. The ending to this book was pretty wild. I like the audacity of it but I still woud've liked to see the Silver Shamrock mask ending more. The movie ending works fine but Laurie keeping the mask in her home for that ending feels like a holdover from this original ending. I always thought that was weird. I appreciate the work in this trilogy of videos. I recommend reading the Halloween '78 novelisation by Richard Curtis (I think) if you can find it cheap. The beginning is very different from the movie. It predates definitive supernatural things way before any of the movies. It's a trip. Great costume, and Free Palestine! Until everyone is free no one is.

I’ve only seen Halloween Ends once but I do want to do a rewatch for analytical purposes. I wish that Ends would have started at the end of Halloween night even ifs not exactly like the book. We needed more context into how Laurie got to where she was and Alison. That scene with the little girl could have been so dope in the movie. Some stuff seemed a bit much because I like the Halloween films more grounded in reality. I like the sense that something about Michael may be supernatural but I don’t think that it needs to go super deep. Michaels ambiguity is what draws me to him. I guess I like the strong silent type 😂

Yeah, after learning about what a horrible person Corey’s mom was in the book, she absolutely deserved what she got. It’s even better in the book because, if memory serves, Michael himself kills her. Anyway, I think that if they included more information on Corey’s backstory, he could have been a much more well-written and believable character. He could have been a great homage to Norman Bates. But alas, his story was just sloppily written in the movie. Also, I would have loved it if there was a group of kids were essentially worshippers of Myers. That would have been a neat way to make him seem more like a Bogeyman, to the point where there are in universe rumors on how to summon him. That alone would be an awesome homage to Candyman.

There is a certain curiosity when it comes to the novelization and the film, because clearly the backstories are “canon” in that Logan notes he wrote them out when they were doing the scripts (The Making of Book notes anyways) and the novelization just makes stuff that happens in the film make sense both as explanations but also why the film is shot and scenes are portrayed the way they are (ex when Michael kills Corey in the film it’s framing and editing reflects EXACTLY how the novel explains what is happening) so it’s like: what all was filmed or scripted before rewrites/during shooting/improv’d? I know we have a few deleted scenes on home media, and there’s more unreleased but HOW much more besides the different endings? Is there more Laurie footage? Etc. I find that fascinating but according to Malek at H45: Universal dictates what scenes and footage is released on home media so…up to them on what we will see. Tbh I’m rambling here lmao but I really love this crossing over and dissection of the novel, the final film and what BTS info we could gather. It makes for a fascinating study, and makes Halloween Ends the most interesting Halloween film since H6 and that production lore!

Although I gave the film a 6.5 out of 10 the novel on the other hand gets a 9 out of 10. The novel for Halloween: Kills has the better ending for me giving the Kills novel a 9.5 out of 10. The Halloween (1978) novel gets a 10 out of 10. Halloween (2018) novel gets a 8.5 out of 10. You have done such a good job on covering these novels. You should check out the Halloween (1978) novel it’s definitely a fun read.

I knew Ends would be the most interesting of the Book vs Movie reviews. Did they ever test screen Ends with people that have seen the first two. I know some movies get pre screened and they go through a rewrite. Its nice this comes out early Halloween so we can feast on it this day. In the book does it imply that Micheal is also a cannibal? I disagree a lil I kinda like that bleak ending. I can see your reading of how this story has a lot of class and political undertones. But I still like my michael as just evil. Plain and simple there is and isn't and he's obsessed with the isn't. That's how black and white his world is. He understands he can kill and just wants to do it since he was a child. I like this idea he awakes evil or injects it into someone. And for Lauri to finally stop this cycle from going on she has to kill him. And she knows she's a killer and after that night knowing it's not just Michael and Corey. No body is safe. So she locks herself in her home. If her neice wants to leave ok

But I gotta say, this book does make the movie make so much more sense but would’ve had enough material for a fourth movie with all the lore. Wow. You believe Haunted Hippie made me like Ends even more. They should've kept all of it. Even if it was like a Marvel movie almost to 3hrs it would've been better than what they did. And worth it. I thought I understood Ends but the novel showed me I understood very little 🤣🤣🤣 this novel actually explained Michael and his why. If you link the original sam hain story, Michael's great grandfather and his grandfather (both had the same issue) and Michael as a child story before he kills his sister (from the original movie novelization) to this is Michael full 360. You'd totally understand. That same feeding off fear and etc is the samething Enda (the one started the curse) fed off. The town tore up Michael just like they did Enda in the story. But then the druids made it a curse that it would happen over and over. The evil. (in the original movie novelization)

Awesome costume! I respect the novelization writers for trying to salvage this mess but the main problem is they were not the primary writers crafting this story and I suspect the only writing they did on the main script was improving dialog, because the main writers did not come up with all this additional material in the first place does it really fix anything! This trilogy is a total mess and if the only way they can improve that is with tie in novels written by other people than they failed!

David Gordon Green is full of shit! *ahem* Sorry! 🤣🤣🤣 if they had shot Ends straight from the novel with the exception of the ending (I preferred the movie ending to the book), this would have been a much better received movie. Everything was better explained. I would've gladly sat through a two and a half hour Halloween movie if you take the time to introduce and give depth to the new character you just threw at us and some better history to the time jump. Nelson was needed, but not as much as the book gave. We didnt need the backstory, but some sort of worship could've been conveyed. One of the questions we had was how Michael survived that long. I wish we couldve gotten the full story from jump, but we couldn't because it wasn't there. No amount of pretending and changing of the narrative DGG tries will erase the fact that this was supposed to be a one shot and then it was successful enough to merit a sequel. Whoever allowed him to be like 'yeah lets introduce this new thing out of nowhere to CLOSE OUR TRILOGY' needs to be smacked. Its so weird because as MUCH as I love Ends and I do. You know I do. Its still the one that makes me the angriest because it has the best idea with the worst possible execution and timing. Cory was such a great character and he was wasted here. The book does make the movie better and easier to understand, but that just goes to show you that DGG wasn't great at the execution of bringing this to life the way he should've. A book shouldn't be what is needed to help your movie.
