Running on the Border Line is a film that I shot while running across The Pyrenees from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean Sea on an adventure to break the fastest known time on the Haute Route Pyrenees (HRP). The route covers around 750 km and 40,000 m of ascent with only a few small villages on the way to resupply with food.
I hope you enjoy it!

I never plan to monetise any content , but if you liked the video I would love it if you considered donating to The Martin Moran Foundation, my charity of choice. They do fantastic work helping to get young people, who wouldn't otherwise have the support, into the great outdoors and equip them to have their own adventures in the mountains.

I think you should brag a bit more or use more clickbait :D I clicked on the video with the expectation of seing another random hiking vlog and then you start of with an 80+km day 🤯 I think that if you put this in the title or on the thumbnail more people will click on this. And they wont be disappointed! I know you mention "Fastest Known Time Film" in the title but for people that don't know the website, this means nothing..

Mike, this was ace. The fatigue on your face as the challenge progressed! Many congratulations again. A stunning achievement. I've so many questions - but I'll content myself with: how the hell did you manage to do so much filming whilst setting such a fabulous FKT?!

Thanks Nicholas. I'm really happy you liked it! Sleep was pretty hard to come by from day one because of the cold nights and my zero season sleeping bag! It's a good question! Filming got harder and harder as I got towards the end - I might have shaved an hour of my time without the camera 😂

Brilliant effort especially so late in the season. I spent three seasons back in 2010 to 2012 in the central regions. July was good each year. Very few bad days. I'm impressed by the minimal weight everyone now seems to get by with. I vaguely remember my base weight of 12 kilos!

Thanks Richard! The last few summers in particular seem to have been quite mixed in The Pyrenees. I bet with the extra weight you benefited enormously in comfort though, which would have been well worth it! I didn't have a single good sleep bivying or under my tarp!

@@mikecoppock4409 Me too. More seriously, there are some parts that took a lot of time and a lot of careful steps. Going down after a few passes was the worst and most dangerous. I think I'm lucnk or wasn't unlucky. Only hurt my ankles, twisted them in the last few days when lightweight. Fell a few times on my back, no problem. I was scared every single day to fall frontward in rocks or washouts where massive injury or death was certain.

Once the film is done, will do a trailer, my "Production Company" is MeetExplorers (other KZfaq channel) and the full film will only be released after festivals (if selected) and a few paid conferences here in Belgium. Ideally the film would be released on KZfaq for free somewhere in 2024.

@@lonckelph I can imagine! Some parts took a lot of care with a 4 kg bag... Especially the descent from Molieres! Your body must have adapted to carrying the load really well over the route to have had so few injuries. I'll be sure to look out for the film, it will be an amazing story to hear!

@@mikecoppock4409 I think the best/funny part is on day 9 or so when I broke a carbon pole. Saw a branch using sharp rock (my victorinox knif has only a 4cm blade) I think no one can adapt to a 20-49kg pack in the mountains. It's about wanting to do it, being super duper careful (and not unlucky) and take breaks every 20 min when the pack hurts too much. My only talent is to WANT and being able to support that stupid shoulder pain. OF course I have no disability on the back so I can carry the weight.

Thank you for sharing this journey! What an achievement! I'm planning to walk the Hrp this summer, but man, dashing it like you did, that is truly impressive. And filming it. And plant-based. Wow ❤ Were you getting enough protein for recovery? I mean obviously you managed, I'm just wondering:)
@mikecoppock4409

Thanks @mattsalix ! Happy you found it motivating ! You'll really enjoy the HRP - such an epic route !! I was eating a lot of carbs but in the villages I'd always have some tins of beans, avocado or fresh fruit. So, no probably not 😂 but during these things it's pretty usual to be in huge calorie deficit especially when you are self supported, you just have to take the short term hit and recover well once it's over. The hardest thing recovery wise was probably the lack of sleep everyday which I think would impact more on performance than diet over 12 days.

Hi Mike...Great Vid and congrats..... a few questions if i may, Im planning a fastpack trip myself, self supported, first question how did you find it securing water en route ?... what backpack did you use....and the million dollar question.... any advice please ?

Hey ! Thanks happy you enjoyed it! Water wasn't really an issue except at the start and end, but there are usually fonts in the villages or shops to buy water. I didn't filter any water but some people do I think. I was using an ultimate direction pack- not the lightest out there but I love their durability. I also did a blog post about my run which has more info in it too. Enjoy !!!

this is amazing man, congrats, that last day of 135km is insane, I can't even imagine 😂. Do you have a list of your gear that you took with you? It would be really helpful for me to plan my trip. I'm turned vegan recently and am torn on down sleeping bags, did you use a synthetic one and which do you recommend that is not as heavy. Thanks mate.

Hey @pringerx Thanks!! The last day got pretty wild towards the end 😂. My gear is here: lighterpack.com/r/vnqfh5 . I had a sea to summit Spark 0 that I had before I was vegan, but it didn't really work!! I think the problem with synthetic is that they don't pack down so small, but I have a synthetic one now (OMM Mountain raid 100), but it feels very similar to my old one and won't be very warm. I had some really bad nights up there. I'd say if you want to prioritise sleep it would be worth taking a slightly warmer and heavier sleeping bag! Have a great trip!
