This is the 2019 KTM 300 XC-W TPI. The question I’m asking today is whether or not 123 -130 hours is enough for this long term test of the TPI system. Many are worried about oil pump failures which would cause the engine to seize up on a ride. While I’m sure that some people have had this issue, I haven’t. It’s hard to put that many hours on bikes when you only ride once per week and you split time on 7-8 bikes over the course of a year.
If I take the bike to 200 hours, will that prove anything that I haven’t already proven here?

I hear you, but my livelihood and family are riding and depending on these business assets. That is what they are to me :) Got to keep testing new things all the time. If I only did one bike at a time and put 120 hours on each, it would be hard to show very many things, so I try to strike a balance.

@@DirtBikeChannel hey Kyle. I hope I didn't come across as being critical. Far from it. I was just expressing my jealousy of the life you lead. I work on these bike week in week out in the UK. I've seen a lot of things on TPi's mostly good. We recommend a piston, oil pump and tank filter change at 80hrs . Oil pump change is really precautionary but I've seen these things do 200hrs on the same oil pump and 150hrs on a piston and all was good. What I have see recently is the water temp sensor causing running issues as the hours racked up on a couple of bikes. A fairly low cost item and when we changed it all was good. One thing I change particularly if an engine has got really hot is the head o'rings. Any leakage at the head causing loss of compression can effect the running. Again a cheap easy job to do whilst carrying out a good bike service. Tell tale sign is loss of coolant. Good maintenance makes a bike run well. Good work Kyle ;-)
@Frank88Workz
@Frank88Workz 4 жыл бұрын
If the water temps sensor fail, do you have a FI light of some kind to tell you that or you just have to test it if the bike runs weird ?

@RobboRobinson
@RobboRobinson 4 жыл бұрын
Frank88Workz bit of a weird one, you don’t get any fault codes on diagnostics . Nick who I work with tested a new one in the bike and it cured the irregular running. Similar thing happened with a crankcase pressure sensor too. That’s the rubber pipe you see coming from the base of the cylinder just above the inlet manifold. Sensor located under the 2stroke oil tank.

Thanks Kyle. Enjoying all the new content. 100 hours is a good long term test. Haters gonna hate. Most non-racing owners don't put 100hours in on a season, especially in regions with winters. If a bike has been ridden hard and no major issues arise by 100h, that's a good measure of quality. The piston on my 2018 250xc at 100hr looked very good. New piston, new pipe, clean, teardown and grease. Making progress to 200h! Keep at it Kyle!

I've been following this for a bit and I think 120hours is pretty good for your channel. With that said, I am in the market for a bike in the next month or so and I have a couple dealerships near me battling on the best price for a leftover 19 and it is to the point pricewise where I want to pull the trigger cause it's too good to pass up. But coming from a 17xcw I'm worried about some of the issues with lubrication on starting and scoring the cylinder, so I am in the camp of wanting to see the cylinder and piston at this point. Love your content and keep it coming, thanks!

I think that you have done a great job already. You have put on more hours than you planned. Test complete. I was really waiting to hear your results. Give it away. It’s definitely not as nice as some of your other giveaway bikes but still an awesome bike to get for free... I have a question about the oil pump wake up plug. Did you or any of the riders use it at all after a good crash where the bike landed upside down? That procedure to bleed potential air out of the oil line doesn’t seem very realistic in a race situation...

I vote for an extended review that would represent the typical life of a viewers bike. Kicking them down the road might be the smartest thing but it wouldn’t answer or put to rest the one of the hugest hot button issues in motorcycling ever. How reliable are these TPI bikes. If you stop now, you leave questions on the table. If you went to 200 I think that would be a milestone that would satisfy even the most ardent TPI critic.

Enough is enough, you've tested it beyond what most magazines ever will. Matter of fact, you might as well let it go now and I'd even be willing to buy it "as is". Granted, its pretty well used up so you'd have to sell it to me at a greatly reduced price 😁 but hey, you've gotten your use out of it so now it's my turn! Just wondering though, after doing the "idle screw mod" what did you set the air screw to? Got my '18 250tpi a ½ turn out after that mod... and it seems fine.

11/2021: Got 201hrs out of my 2019 te300i before doing a piston ("B") and oil pump. Cyl looked just fine, no ridge at top, no groves or anything, but orig piston was definitely sloppy in the bore and ring gap was at 0.5mm limit. Pre-rebuild compression ~135lb (stock head @2800MSL), oh yeah it was time. I will go 150hrs max in the future though based on how running performance dropped way off at ~180hrs... Had to put a CCP sensor in it at 70 hrs for it running inconsistently. By 180hrs it was starting to run oddly again mainly in midrange like the CCPS was bad again, mainly 4-stroking badly under mid-load up hills. That is what pushed me to finally do a piston. Low compression notwithstanding, I'm guessing there was so much blowby that it was causing bad info at the CCPS such that the ECU was thus commanding bad fueling-- I could have kept going more Hrs if it were carbed I suppose. So TPI is in a way making me do the right thing by not running a piston until it turns sideways in the bore! (Now 185lbs with RKTek mild compression upgrade insert for ID mountains, yet to see how it rides, but it sure is running nicely in the driveway...)

I agree to pull the top end and inspect, throw a fresh piston in, and send it down the road. Or, I am more than willing to ride it for you, then give it back with full report!! I even live close! Love the commentary. The bike looks like you have put a hard 123 hrs (probably harder than most who would have paid $10k for it). The only thing harder on it would be to throw a paddle tire on and head to the dunes. Sand riding seems to put the hardest hours on the motor.

You put it through the ringer, give it away and maybe try to get some updates to 200 hrs. I just picked up a 2020 250 xc-w, so I vote you move on to a long term test of the 2020 xcw since you always talk about how much you want one.

Give it to torture test magazine (youtuber) to run it through some more paces.

Miles Hankins I totally agree. He doesn’t have a bike right now and this would be a great collaboration between Torture Test Magazine and Dirt Bike Channel.

Oh yeah. I'd like to see the rumors put to rest about KTM being a parts buggy. Ride it hard and list the repairs man.

Try hitting the button, leave it for 10-15seconds then try to start it With the choke/ cold start off (whatever it’s called) mine will start first try even in - temperatures (Celsius) with no choke but it’s hard to start with choke on

If i spent that much on a TPI, i would just change that oil pump every hundred or 120 hours anyway. I agree with the others, take a peek at the top end and give it to a friend like me. Lol Love the channel Kyle!!!!

So I noticed you said that the 19 TPI system isn't as good as the 20 TPI system, is that the case even with the GET ECU?

I have a 2019 that has had the GET ECU for the past 60 hours. It runs perfect. Best running bike I’ve ever had. Don’t know how it could run any better.

You rode it long enough. Move on and give it away. You have beat it up enough. Thanks for the content. I found your channel after a coworker gave me two old dirt bikes, a Kawasaki kx250 1990 and 1986. (They are in great condition). I just got into dirt biking again after 10 years of school and mission. It is fun, but lots of the trails in Southern Arizona have been closed off by private land. I need to expand my trail areas. I would be interested to see the piston and rings of the bike. I would also be interested in your trail maps and how you found them. Thanks
