The 2022 F1 season is finally over. I won't lie, it hasn't been the most interesting season, so I wanted to make a video to answer the question in the title. So have the regulations that were designed to promote better racing REALLY worked?

I think the heaviness of the cars has seriously hurt racing. There's understeer into corners and oversteer out. Every new regulation change seems to take downforce away from the cars so now there's very little overtakes and battling through corners, the only overtakes now being with DRS divebombs (which are nowhere near as impressive)

And not just the heaviness, but the size of the cars too (I know it's happened because of safety) but I would hope to see the cars to get smaller

@@maze4184 I think they want the cars to be as safe as they are now until they want to implement any kind of regulations regarding the size of the cars. But still I agree with that the cars should get smaller

@@justinburley8659 let's hope an Indy/F2-sized car is in the works. Probably would have to be longer to account for the higher speeds but anything shorter than the late 2010s cars would be nice.

4:10 this is a vision for the long term. F1 themselves admitted that the gaps would be bigger but aslong as they regulations stay pretty consistent the next 3-5 years I think we can have a whole other discussion

2022 regulations was for improving overtaking, so they succeeded in but the need seriously to look at the heavy and side of the cars

A large gap between teams was expected because performance converges towards the end of a regulation cycle as teams find the best solutions to all their problems. While we didn't get any surprise winners we did get some interesting strategies that led to points with Albon's Australia strategy. We also got magnussen's surprise pole even if it was weather dependant. The worst thing about the new regulations is the weight increase but hopefully that can be partially solved for 2026, formula e have a smaller lighter car for gen 3 so it's not impossible

I don't think the fastest car blasting through the field is bad, we just need 6 fastest cars not just 1, or at least 6 "fast enough" cars.

I cant lie, I was really gassed for these rege and there are certain aspects of it that work well, but I find myself looking at races from last year and the years before and missing the pure pace and cornering ability of those old cars.

Regulations almost never work in their first couple of years (remember how 2014 & 2015 were hot mid), I expect racing to consistently improve over the years

Remembering the top teams were able to make these cars pre budget gap we will see teams slowly getting closer. By 2024 or 2025 the field spread will be much smaller

The biggest issue preventing better racing is the lack of slipstream meaning these cars need drs to catch up. Compare any opening lap from last year to this year down thde first long straight where the cars are all close and see how little the 2022 cars catch up compared to last year.

I think a main part in the qualifying being worth less is the overpoweredness of DRS this year almost 30 kph straightline advantage is rarely possible to defend against

when overtaking is easier it makes the drivers with best cars to be on top, and that makes the races boring and predictable

They looked nice and racing them is more possible than with the cars from 2014-2021. Weight is a big problem tho, the racing is a slog even though it's better.

I feel like a change to drs is needed to promote actual racing instead of drs fly by’s. Maybe reduce the gap by 50% so they can get close to driver in front but not fly by.

They've definitely worked, but they can still be improved. They should substantially reduce the weight of the cars, as that is a key problem holding them back from being able to race each other in the way we'd like.

Formula 1 needs to be like any other good multiplayer game, you need to have different strategies that are capable of winning with significant tradeoffs, and whoever executes theirs the best wins. We saw that at Bahrain with Charles and Max battling through the drs zones, but finally these regulations really tip the scales too far towards high speed aero efficiency, which diminishes the drama significantly. Pirelli can tout their overtake numbers all they want, but I think they need some improvements to rebalance the decks teams are building.

Great video. The lack of ability to hold up a faster driver behind is defineitely something that needs to be looked at. Well done picking up on it. Hungary 21 was an all-time classic because of the battle between Hamilton and Alonso. As you pointed out, a battle like that was impossible this year.

I think that’s a dumb point tbh. The new regs done what it was set to do, that is allowing cars to follow each other more closely. Taking Hungary 21 as a point to whine about is nonsense. Hungary 21 is not a feature of old regulations, it was the side effect. A much hated side effect that plagued every race but just happens to cause a “dramatic” (but still objectively a bad race) once in a blue moon.

F1 hasn't had an interesting season since Rosberg left Merc until 2021. To be fair we the Merc dominance just has shifted to RB. The "problem" with F1 is that usually 1 teams gets the regulations so right they will outright dominate the others..

Saying that “all Red Bull needed to do was to create the best race car” as if that is something easy is stupid, the problem wasn’t Red Bulls car it was Ferrari having trouble with the front tyres, leaving them with a worse race car. Because building a race car actually is, quite hard

I think the point was simply that the strength of having a good car in qualifying has just fallen off this year. It used to really mean something to put it on pole now it’s not nearly as important.

@@Dwilsonmusic145 this RB basically had a philosophy switch in 2022 from peak downforce to a good level of downforce but the car is a lot better in a straight line And because cars can follow closer peak downforce isn’t the be all and end all anymore as long as you can now stay in contact having a faster car down the straight makes more sense That RB18 was a rocketship in a straight line That was one of the issues with Mercedes last year as well they focused too much on potential peak downforce with their concept than a raceable car

When the latest cars came out I thought they looked OK for F2, but asked where the F1 car was? My opinion hasn't changed, they just look dumbed down relative to the old ones.

I don’t know why DRS gets such negative comments. As soon as someone passes with DRS, the passes driver then has DRS. Personally, I’d like to see DRS expanded to 2 seconds to allow more DRS.

Tbh, they need to reduce the gap between the worst and best teams. Like rn there is no point in an increased cost cap for willing, they still can't reach it. So something like a bonus sum for the lowest 2 finishers?

Personnally I think the cars look waaaaay better this year ! The 2017-2021 cars weren't to my liking at all, I don't think they looked aggressive at all, they looked fat, squarish and overly complicated. This year's cars look way more fluid and fast, although they are very heavy (it's a big problem... Hoepully the 2026 goal to make them a bit lighter works). About the DRS, I totally agree, it's too powerful ! And Ross Brawn agrees aswell, he recently stated that he wanted to make it less strong in some races where it just makes it simple and just a formality to overtake. So we'll see, but at Baku, Monza and Interlagos it's really too powerful, and slightly too powerful at the Red Bull Ring, at Spa, Bahrain maybe, Jeddah for sure, and maybe a few other places. I think the Albert Park and Abu Dhabi track changes have been quite good by the way. Concerning the fact that there is a big gap between the big teams and small teams, it's always the case at the beginning of a new regulation. I think it will get better quite fast, in early 2023 already I think it will be close. By the end of the season, we frequently had the top 6 in 5 tenths, and the rest between .8 and 1.6 seconds slower than the top car. It will be good. But you're right, it's a bit easy to overtake sometimes. And we end up with a very dull race order, always kind of the same. But the new regulations aren't the culprit in my opinion. First, we have the DRS of course, which makes it too easy to overtake on so many tracks ! It should have a smaller gap to be less powerful. Then, I think the cars are too reliable. Part of the drama in the past cas the many car failures. I don't want cars to break down all the time, but I think having a car that has only 1 or 2 retirements all season is too easy. And that's where we could solve several problems at once. Make the car lighter, smaller, more agile and have more drama in the racing. Make the cars shorter, less wide, put a weight limit that is hard to reach. Teams will try to lose weight, by changing things, miniaturizing, and this will be a challenge. Change the 3 engine part limit to 5 and let the teams do deal with the budget cap and do their best. It would be a huge challenge for them !!! Make some safety elements lighter, the safety is great, and some devices are redundant. Removing the MGU-H will gain weight aswell. The new 18 inches wheels have added 35kg aswell, that a huge problem, but I don't think the FIA will go back to 13", or even 15" to gain weight... We will never get back to 600kg, but 720 seems achievable. And finally, we can have lighter cars by bringing back refueling !! The FIA is very hesitant about it though they think about it regularly. Not only will this mean lighter cars during the race, it will bring back an enormous strategy component in the racing. There are no real safety issues. In the last 10 years or so of refueling, nothing bad happens. A few very small fires, a few hoses broken, nothing bad, it just makes it more dramatical. Better racing. I know many of these ideas won't happen, but I really wish they did. The modern F1s are so fucking heavy !!! 798kg without fuel is enormous ! With 105 kg of fuel at the beginning of a race, that means the cars are 900kg+, that's way too much... The 4 big problems of weight are : -Car dimensions : They are huge, which means they are heavier -Engines : The modern engines are more more than 50kg heavier than the previous V8s. It's crazy. Removing the MGU-H should gain a few kgs, but that's not enough. A solution must be found. -Security elements and wheels : The safety parts in the nose, in the sidepods, on top, etc... And the halo are very, very heavy. Surely reviewing the entire thing from scratch and having a global safe chassis built with security as its purpose would be way lighter. And the new wheels have added 35kg : Yes the 18" wheels look nice, and are closer to road tyres, but do we care? Tyre technology is so good now that race tyres don't make it into the road tyres. Going to 18" was a mistake, we didn't need this added weight ! -Fuel : As I said, fuel adds to 105kg to the car (sometimes teams put a few less kgs of fuel, but that's negligeable), and that's too much. We need to address that, and since we don't want the cars to slow down by burning less fuel, they are already extremely efficient, we NEED refueling back. The modern F1 cars are just trucks : They are heavy, not agile at all, not spectacular on track, look slow in corners. All that for what? The cars aren't even faster than the 2004 cars !! If the 2004 cars had DRS, slick tyres, and modern fuel efficiency, they would 600kg fucking rockets and would annihilate modern cars. Btw, modern cars are way too slow in the straight lines in my opinion. At most tracks, we don't reach more than 310-320 kph without a toe and DRS...

The point is that one team minced and skipped their way to another championship... And we know Alonso said that championships don't matter if you have no competition😁😁🤪.. unless it was aimed at just Lewis

this year there was competition, ferrari just bungled it so hard in the middle of the year there was no contesting the championship anymore in the 2nd half

Hell no. The regs were meant to stop one driver and car running away with it all. Yet the first year a new record for most wins in a season is set. Also the midfield just can't make up with how shit it was.

Man, people tend to forget what happens whenever new regulations are introduced. In 2009 you had Brawn running away with it until they basically didn't have the money to develop the car at the same pace as Red Bull was. 2014, 2015, and 2016 were pure Mercadea domination. This is a long term plan. Failing to acknowledge that is honestly a failure of your video.

Listen lad, make a video on will an opposite of a DRS be a good thing for the sport. By this I mean a flap that would add more drag to the driver in front if they start to build an ungodly gap a la 20-30 seconds.
