I was 5 years old and just getting used to Kindergarten, never having gone to preschool or anything similar. I started getting common symptoms of what seemed like a regular cold. Stuffy and runny nose, coughing, and usual things like that. My parents took me to the doctor 3 times, and each time, he told us that it was just me getting used to being in a social setting and that it was normal for kids to get sicknesses starting out in school. Then, I started getting headaches, but when we told the doctor, he brushed it off saying my head was just stuffy. The thing about the headaches was that they would sometimes get so bad that I would start to cry. My grandmother, who was living in our finished basement at this time said, and I quote "It is NOT normal for a child her age to be getting headaches of this magnitude!" (She was from England) And then something else started to happen. Going to school, coming home from school, and during school, I would cry for my mommy, saying I want to be with her. Again, the doctor said this was common for little kids my age getting used to school. My parents were fed up, and changed doctors offices. One day, I was running through the hallway, and my mom noticed something wrong with my left eye. She called my dad from the living room and took me to a better lit place. They looked closely and noticed it looked like it was slightly bulging out, and they rushed me to the local ER. I had some scans take, and we were told that I had a tumor in the left side of my face, and that I needed to be rushed to Children's National Hospital in DC, Virginia. There, it was determined that I had cancer. I went through a year of Radiation therapy and chemotherapy, lost all of my hair, and took about 2 years of full immune recovery, before I could go back to school safely. I also had to go for MRIs for about 3-5 years more, so they could monitor the tumor. My hair did grow back, so that was not a permanent thing at least, though the radiation therapy did mess up my teeth and stunt my growth, so I didn't grow as tall as I should have. I am now 19, 4'8 for the past 5 years, my nose doesn't work like it should because the tumor rerouted my nasal passages, and I'm blind in my left eye, because the tumor killed the part that connects it to my brain. We never pressed charges on the doctor that misdiagnosed me, because our health insurance covered costs.but what do you think? Should we still have pressed charges? (P.S. My name is Sara)

In middle school, I showed up to a class white as a sheet and in obvious pain. Teacher sent me to the nurse, who decided that the stomach cramps I was having were obviously just from my period, never mind that it ended a couple days ago and my cramps are never as bad as this. She told me to rest and called my mom to take me home. Next morning, I woke up in genuine agony. As in the worst physical pain I have ever experienced. My parents rushed me to the hospital, of course, and it turns out I had BAD appendicitis. I probably would've died if it'd gone untreated another day. As it was I needed surgery and spent a couple weeks in the hospital. Mom then proceeded to make it her life's mission to get that nurse fired. She managed it in the end, too. I miss my mom. She was a badass.

I went to the doctor with shoulder pain and they x-rayed it. Dr comes in with the x-rays saying that I had a congenital issue and that one of my bones was hollow with no marrow and therefore not supporting muscles and whatever else properly. Im like WTF?! They said they could do some surgeries to fix and to schedule another appointment to start things up. I tell my family and my mom was shocked. She comes with me to the next appointment and the Dr all of a sudden has ZERO recollection of telling me anything from the previous appointment. I’m like then why am I here?! This is a follow up for hollowbonitus! (I just made that up) and hes like “Idk everythings fine? Why are you here?” At that point I thought something was up and we got the hell outta there. Still don’t understand what actually happened there.

I was misdiagnosed with "hard fat" because you know.. I am a woman in my 30's! Yeah, it turned out I had ovarian cancer, and my tumor was 11 inches in diameter. It wasn't properly diagnosed until I was in an ER in another state with a ruptured malignant tumor. Don't worry, I'm in remission 😊

In my early-mid 30's, I was having trouble swallowing/keeping food down. Like, it never even made it to the stomach, so there was no bile taste/smell, just chewed up food and drink. Got told "stop gulping your food". So I just avoided eating anywhere public or made sure there was a bathroom in easy distance. Constantly had to explain "no, its not your cooking, I do this with all food". I dealt with this for 2-3 more years before changing providers and mentioned it to my new dr. She freaks out and orders half a dozen tests. Luckily it was NOT cancer, but it was something called achalasia. Still not fun and have had some difficulties dealing with, but having a diaganosis other than "you're a grown adult who doesn't know how to eat properly" makes it considerably easier to deal with.

I was pissing blood. A nurse at the VA told me, "It's obvious that you have a kidney stone." I told her that it was a bladder infection and that I'd had several in the past. She snapped, "What the hell do you know, yu aren't a doctor! You need to go to the VA hospital for surgery." I went. The first they did was test for the infection, which was positive. Two weeks on antibiotics, and I was fine.

@@timohara7717 I was diagnosed with Diabetes by the A. They sent me the test strips, but you had to sit through a class before you got the meter. It was given every six months. It had been canceled three times. She was yelling that I didn't keep a glucose log. I told her that I didn't have the meter. She went into another rant that everyone had to be taught to use them, because they were so complicated. There was a new, sealed meter on her desk. I picked it up and opened it. I coded it for the supplied strips and used a test s7rip with the test solution, then I tested my blood. I then informed her that I had taught my dad to use three different meters, and I had friends who designed medical equipment. When the VA switched to Abbot Labs One Touch meters, they had a new class. I ended up helping that pair of nurses teach people to use them. I'm a retired Engineer, and I had worked with thousands of 'complicated' items over my lifetime, prior to that.

I went to the doctor with what could only be described as 20 out of 10 pain. I wasn't able to walk stand or speak. I went to The local ER after the pain got so bad I began throwing up and my nose started bleeding. They told me it was gas and gave me something to induce vomiting. For an entire year I had this attack repeatedly and working under the assumption that it was gas forced myself to vomit every time it happened. One night it was so bad I was physically unable to move and a friend of mine insisted on going to a different hospital. Hospital number two acknowledge that the symptoms were not indicative of gas. Upon doing some actual energy tests we discovered that I was in the middle of a serious gallstone attack and my gallbladder was twice the size it was supposed to be and in danger of rupturing and I was immediately rushed for emergency surgery. If you have ever had a gallstone attack you know that it is legitimately one of the worst pains you can experience. I begged my friend to shoot me and that if they wouldn't I would. I actively avoid that ER now

I’ve been misdiagnosed/under diagnosed for 11 years. Suffered horrendous dizzy spells for years that suddenly got worse with Covid. Didn’t get an MRI until this past year. Originally it was diagnosed as PCOS since the spells happened around my menses and I’m a larger woman. Not even in the right body system! Thank God I finally grew a bit of a spine, wrote every test and meds we’ve tried in a notebook, and found new doctors that saw my suffering and FIXED IT. I swear, it was infuriating.

I was an extremely shy, introverted child and I started getting extremely avoidant of talking to strangers when I was about ten. I was a picky eater, hated the feeling of many fabrics on my skin, avoided eye contact, and did not understand sarcasm nor hyperbole. As a teenager, I was diagnosed with the following: Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Sensory Hypersensitivity. Turns out, these were all symptoms. When I was twenty-three, I finally got a correct diagnosis: Autism. Because I wasn't diagnosed until adulthood, school was hell. I didn't have access to an IEP (Individual Education Plan), and I was often told that I was brilliant, but lazy. I wasn't lazy, I had severe communication and socialization problems. Autism is often missed in girls and women because we are expected to be more introverted.

6:23 I have a quite similar story actually I fell while on a snowboard on a school trip and hurt my wrist. They said it was just a bruise. One of my classmates told other people I had a broken wrist. When my teachers found that out, they asked "why are you telling thateveryone? Are you a doctor?" Going to the hospital 3 days or so later, directly after being back from the school trip, they made an x-ray and my wrist was broken. What a shocker. Another thing: One of my classmates had the same exact thing, but he went like a month after the trip and had to get operated. That's really fun, isn't it?

My boyfriend in high school got a partially collapsed lung. Have no idea how it happened but he somehow made it through band class (he played trumpet) and then called his mom to pick him up. He ended up in the hospital and apparently couldn’t give him anesthetics before operating because it would slow his breathing too much. Eventually had to give him morphine because “his screams were scaring other patients”

Story 10: This _almost_ happened to me, too! Apparently, my gallbladder had been making gallstones since I was very young (possibly even when I was a baby, but my doctors can't be sure). The ER doc originally misdiagnosed it as an ectopic pregnancy (even though I've literally never had sex) and ordered an ultrasound to confirm. Well, they didn't find their Virgin Mary Baby, but they sure found a mostly-necrotic gallbladder that was ready to rupture at any time from all the stones inside of it. One blood test later, as they prep me for emergency surgery, my pancreatic enzymes were slightly off, and the doc was worried that I might have pancreatitis secondary to the gallstones. But nope, no pancreatitis! _Four_ blood tests later, and my docs don't know what caused the weird lab values. Gallbladder was removed and I made a full recovery.

I have a story. At the age of 4 I was taken to the doctors with comlpaints of chestpain and short of breath. Pediatrition took one look at me and said "He's got a stomach ache. It'll pass." 1 week later I'm barely concious and am taken back. A differen pediatrition uses the stephoscope and with wide eyes tells my mother. "Get him to the hospital NOW!" My lungs were FULL of liquid. Pneumonia. I spent a week on a mechanical breathing apratus, drifting in and out of conciousness. The moment I was stable, my mom went back to the first pediatrition and slapped him so hard he was in a daze whilst she screamed at him. He continued to be a pediatrition until retirement. My first memory is waking up, hooked up to God knows what and my identical brother hugging me, bawling his eyes out. As you might have guessed at this point, this is my mother's recalling of the tale as I have zero memories from before waking up. I will forever loathe that man's existence and I'm forever thankful to the professionals that saved my life that day.

I once got a really really bad flu. But this was bad enough that I had very visible swelling in my lypmph nodes under the armpits and a rash that was ultimately unconnected. I went to the doctor after a day of feeling terrible, and while it wasn't an official diagnosis, I apparently tripped some trigger flag thing about the possibility of bubonic plague. They locked the place down, and about an hour later someone comes in with a full biohaz suit, takes some sample from my swollen lymph node, and walks out. The tests confirmed it wasn't bubonic, but it scared me half to death. Ironically, this was about a month before Covid hit, and while I never went antivax or denialist about it, I was rather (stupidly) blase about it in the early months, I think mostly because my fright-from-disease well had been tapped out.

Yes I was having an allergic reaction to something and a doctor diagnosed me with scabies. Which I know I didn’t have because I have not gotten into any situation whatsoever where I could’ve gotten scabies. He prescribed me with a light insecticide lotion to get rid of them. I never filled it and it got better on its own. Scabies doesn’t just get better on it own. The doctor just wouldn’t listen to he telling him I didn’t have exposure to it ever. Didn’t really affect me too badly but it was annoying to never get a correct diagnosis why I was having hives and crap.

I once had a cousin who went to the ER because he was in great pain. He was told he was facking it to get drugs. He died that night from a ruptured appendix. Lawyers made a lot of money from all the lawsuits that flew around from that. His only child was born eight and a half month later. He died not knowing that his wife was pregnant with his son.

My doctor house sent me to a specialist to have a camera down my throat. They did their examination and mention I have esophageal hernia but I will have to talk to my doctor about that. Alright then, I booked a new appointment and I was so unlucky to get the new doctor hired there. He looked at the mail sent from the specialist and says that they found nothing. Confused I tell him that they mentioned esophageal hernia, and he goes: "Yeah, there is something in latin here I don't know what means. Let me look it up." And wouldn't you know it, it was the latin word for esophageal hernia. Because he didn't understand what it meant, he decided that there was nothing wrong with me. I refused to see him again and I was happy to find out that only a few months later he wasn't working there anymore. I guess I wasn't the only one he did a similar stunt like this to.

Ended in the ER after having a sudden fever, my body shaking, and my torso cramping like never before. They do an x ray and ask if i have been pooping, tbf i had od bowl movements for the past year, and when that morning was then said, i have gastritis and gave me meds. I firmly believed that i had it since eating anything other than plain food made me vomit till the last couple of months where it got so bad that i caved and told my mom i need to see a dr at the hospital because my gp didnt have the tools to properly assess the damage. Went for scans and was diagnosed with chrons, but they wanna do a biopsy just to be sure and put me on chrons meds for a few weeks until my follow-up appointment after the surgery. Woke up from surger with 3 scars instead of 2 (had an ovary cyst). i was told that my appendix was on the cuspt of popping, so they took it out and sent everything off for tests. Turns out everything my appendix touched got infected, and it was in the wrong spot, so it touched my digestive system that caused the cramps and vomiting and the same symptoms as chrons. I've never been so happy for a misdiagnosis. Also lost 8kg since i followed the chrons diet and still do so that a bonus. And getting used to my body functionaly normally after one and half years.

I can relate to the last story so much. Doubled in weight in less than a year, constant headaches, random bruises, white cells always super high even when I didn't have an infection, high blood pressure and sugars. My cheeks ballooned, and all weight I gained remained central (arms and legs remained relatively the same as usual) Originally was told its just normal, then it was because I was fat (I got fat because I'm fat?). Pushed for tests for PCOS because I was also getting agonising period cramps - wasn't that. Started seeing endocrinologist and was told I was diabetic. Unrelated psychiatrist visit ended up giving me the answer - Cushing's disease. Just one look at me and he recognised the symptoms. With how many infections I'd had during that period and with covid a few years after, god knows how much worse my health would have been had I not started treatment.

when i was 14 i experienced a severely traumatic event (though i didnt know that), which lead me going into high school with chronic panic attacks and violent sickness, always bad enough to warrant my mom picking me up multiple times over the course of weeks. my attendance record was swiss cheese as a result. i went to my doctor (who treated me since i was little) repeatedly for my sickness and extreme emotional issues, but she never once looked into it. she brushed off my concerns and after so many visits, she told me it was in my head (ha). i was absolutely miserable the rest of my time at school and into early adulthood. my mental state was shot and nobody believed me about how badly i was doing and how i needed help, and my lack of knowledge about mental health did me no favors. i knew something was wrong, but the doctor i trusted didnt even try to help and that opinion rubbed off on everyone else. i didnt get remotely proper medical care until i was 19 and desperate enough to cold call providers. after TEN YEARS of enduring this hell, an event related to the first happened, which brought back all the horror with a vengeance that destroyed my mental state into something unrecognizable. my therapist at the time diagnosed me with ptsd soon after, and had me start cpt the following week. i completed that in around eight months, and in the meantime sorted out a medication cocktail with my psychiatrist that worked well for me (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, the works). im 30 now and have been on fairly mundane maintenance treatment since, and have never been better. while the day to day struggle never really stops with a disorder as severe as ptsd, im proud of myself for fighting for so long. i imagine anyone else with ptsd can relate. i still hate that woman with every fiber of my being, bc she could have done so much to help prevent my mental health decline before it was too late. bonus: it should be noted my childhood doc also refused to test me for adhd, which runs in BOTH SIDES of my family. the same therapist from above had seen me, a grown adult, for less than two appointments (a total of around an hour and a half), figured out something was up and tested me, and promptly sent me to a psychiatrist to get medication underway. she helped me so much when i was so badly let down before and ill always be grateful to her for that.

Went into ortho with indescribable knee pain, doc wouldn’t do any tests nor did he even touch my knee. Told me to lose weight and made me go to physical therapy for 6 weeks calling it something I don’t even remember anymore, something to do with tight muscles. Half way through therapy my therapist sent me back for a second opinion because therapy was worsening symptoms, I asked for a different doctor because my experience with him was so awful (he was combative from the moment he walked in, and completely argumentative.) Despite being set up with someone else, they somehow made my appointment with HIM. He apologized for the inconvenience upon entry and I had to reschedule again, which ground my gears tbh. Throughout this endeavor I experienced a pain so sudden and severe it woke me from a dead sleep, I was screaming for my mom for pain meds. Next morning of that my knee and thigh had swollen twice over, and the ER did nothing for me, no scans or anything, just sent me home. By the time I made it to my new appointment I not only had limited mobility (willingly, for this whole time I was forcing myself to work which had been facility childcare which had no accommodations so I more or less kept my pain to myself) but also had permanent excruciating pain. This second doctor was the partner of the first doctor, and probably having had an earful about me from the first one he went in skeptical. However, I pled my case as he seemed more willing to listen and begged for some kind of test after I told him about the ER visit. He did an MRI, and the MRI only showed the kneecap being pulled to the side by a tight muscle and maybe some clean up that needed to be done. It was enough to garner a knee arthroscopy, and he insisted it would be a 1 hour surgery, in and out. It took months to get that appointment and when the time came it ended up being a 5 hour surgery and one of the worst his partner (different person working under him I think?) had seen in his time to date. A substantial chunk of cartilage had broken off of my knee (the night I woke up to searing pain) and had been tearing up my knee cap until it lodged somewhere and fused. They had to sever a muscle as well, to release my knee cap. It took 8 months of healing, 6 months of therapy, and I have permanent damage that required a knee replacement like a year or two ago but he left the practice shortly after my surgery and went west. I can only assume it was the abhorrent work environment, he was fresh young eyes going into a building full of old selfish cranky imposters for doctors. The night of my surgery after I got home he called our personal number to check on me, and during that at-home rest I realized his old crone of a partner probably paved the way for a lawsuit and he was trying to smooth things over. I wrote to the head of the clinic, I made a MASSIVE in depth google review, and never heard from anyone-and my review got deleted like a week later somehow. I sometimes wish I had reported him-he (the first doc) wasn’t even a knee doctor, he specialized shoulders and arms or something.

For several years, I experienced leg pain. I went to the doctor and was told it was because I was overweight. First of all no test were done and that was the only thing the doctor would believe it was just because I was fat. Come find out, I had to generative this disease in my lower back that was pinching my nerves and my legs causing radiculopathy. It’s so frustrating when a doctor puts blinders on and only sees what they want to see. I admit I was overweight, but not to the point that I was obese. I was the mother of four small children. The youngest was less than a year old.

I was 14 when 9/11 happened. I knew that it happened but it didn't affect me since it was on the other side of the country (I lived near Seattle) and I had not even heard of the World Trade Center prior to its destruction. What also happened in September 2001 was the start of the school year. The local schools always started in September. *A psychologist told me that the reason I (as a 14 year old boy) had developed a crush on a girl in my class in late September 2001 must be due to trauma I experienced from 9/11.* I had not even told the girl that I liked her and we were just friends. The reason that I acknowledged to myself in late September that I had developed feelings for her was that I had by then known her for a few weeks and was starting to get to know her enough that I felt that way. It most certainly was not because a couple buildings I didn't previously know existed were destroyed 3,000 miles away! I tried to explain that this was just a coincidence, but that psychologist insisted that the only possible explanation, considering the timing, was that my feelings for that classmate were caused by trauma from 9/11. She somehow talked my parents into having me take medication, which they made me take daily until I turned 18, at which point I immediately stopped taking it since I knew the whole thing was absurd. Another psychologist later told me that that other one had made a mistake and I didn't actually need to take any medication. More obvious words have not been spoken!

Gallbladder betrayed me too! For years, i had severe diarrhea at odd times (ate an apple, pizza, anything? Who knows whats going to happen!) Also on and off radiating back pain, once so severe i went to the ER (they gave me a muscle relaxation pill after i demoed that i was throwing up everything, promptly threw up the pill). The docs had me go through pt for my back. No real results after that. i just thought: i don't eat the best, and don't have the best posture that must be it. Years after the ER, i got some basic blood work done for my PP. Showed high liver levels . Ultra sound time and the tech asks before the procedure if my gallbladder had been removed yet, as it was chock full of stones. Somehow this was noted in the past and i was never told. Multiple sugeries later (removal of gallbladder, another sugery to try to remove stuck stone, last sugery in different hospital to remove stuck stone with bonus acute pancreatitis) back pain is almost completely gone, and diarrhea is way down. So kids, if you have the above symptoms, get the old gallbladder checked out. May save you years of suffering.

After that for 3 to 4 years i went to specialists and they found nothing. The specialists said that i would grow out of it. All this time i had episodes of these pains lasting from a few min to 24+hr. Now about 2 monts ago i had one of these episode starting around 2am and around 5:30am i went to the bathrooms and after that i coundnt stand up. After so tries i stood up and walked a few steps and fainted. I woke up like a minute or 2 and my mother walked out of her room and found me on the floor and asked me what happed and asked if she shoud call an ambulance. At first i said no but then i changed my mind and said to call the ambulance. The paramedics arived and did some test, gave me some medacine and took me to the hospital there doctors did some more test and i found out that my heart rate is 200+ beats per minute and my blood presure was non existant. Around 8am my heart rate and blood presure returned to normal but i was't let go and around 2:30pm a doctor came and i need to stay at the hospital for even more tests so i stayed for around 5 days in the hospital and i was let go and they recomended to see a cardiologist. So 2 weeks later i see a cardiologist and when he saw the cardiogram and said that i need to see another cardiologist. So i go to the other cardiologist and he does a cardiogram and ultrasound on my heart and found a birth defect in my heart. Now i am on a waiting list for surgure to burn the defective part away.

2017. I had a really bad throat infection and could barely keep down any food. My liver was saying nope and I desperately alternated tylenol and advil to not overdose, but keep ahead of the pain a little bit. Doctor: You are purposefully overdosing tylenol!!! Me: But I'm not... I swear... Please, I keep vomiting.... Doctor: We're running samples to the center for poison control! 12 hours later Doctor: You don't have any acetaminophen in your system. Your liver is on the verge of failing. Your blood iron level is over 1000. You're in an hepatic episode and require an antidote and rehydration immediately, we're keeping you overnight. Me, almost passing out: I told you so....

I have addisons disease (it has to do with the pituitary gland) and when I was 11 (I'm currently 13) We went to the hospital and the doctors said I had too much adrenaline, then we went back after 2 weeks and it was not enough, then we went back and it was too much AGAIN so we went to children's (they have all my medical records and fully understand what's wrong with me) and we found out that I was fine

Technically yes first diagnosing me with ADD then later diagnosing me as having ASD but what else is new on that area. I had a feeling I was on the spectrum for a while tho so that felt validating. Didn’t really affect me too much I’d say.

For years the doctor just insisted I was fat and thats why my joint pain is so bad well I am fat and it's probably not helping turns out I have an auto immune condition that has been chronically attacking my joints likely sense I was 13-14 it's actually bad enough that the head doctor at the practice wants to talk to me

I knew a guy who got an appendectomy in high school. Honestly, he was quite the dumbass. He put his face over a steaming vat of caramel corn. Ended up with a nasty burn on his nose.

Well its a good thing then that the moment i had blood in my stool i raised all the alarm bells and we did a colonoscopy. Was due anyway as many (relative to back then) foods caused stomach pains. Everything hurt and cramped. Found absolutely nothing wrong and also removed a bunch of abcesses so thats great, and for a while the worst pain i had was from moving my belly like atall, because of the colonoscopy and stuff. Turns out, the blood came from a mixture of hemmoroids and an anal tear, both of which dont heal DESPITE using creams and carefully watching my diet to make taking a shit as easy as possible. Taking a shit still hurts and the number of foods i get stomach pains and cramps from is still steadily increasing. But hey atleast i am used to being hopeless and embracing madness as some form of maintaining a feeble will to live as i look for things to look foward to so i dont do something drastic and badly thought out like trying to kill myself because almost every food i eat causes pain and cramps now. And the stuff that doesnt is the most unhealthy and recomended against it as it could possibly be. I cannot emphasize enough that i cannot live off of Gummy Worms, Burgers, Fries, Nugget Foods and Soda. My liver would kill me, though prolly only if i dont die of malnutrition, sudden onset diabetes or i dunno a stroke or clogged arteries first.

Why even bother acknowledging that weight can occasionally be influenced by factors beyond an individuals control only to turn around and immediately be like "but it's your fault anyway". Don't even present the story at that point lol.
