I've seen this Diablo Diamond cut off disc every time I walk down the tool aisle at Home Depot and decided to give it a try and compare it to a standard 4 1/2 inch abrasive grinding disc. At first glance, I would guess that this disc would cut faster, last longer and generally outperform the standard abrasive disc. But check out the video and you'll see how the comparison played out.
If you're interested in checking this disc out for yourself, here it is.

I know this is an older video, but there are some things you should know. First, you’re applying too much pressure when you’re cutting. This makes it more likely that the regular wheels will break. Ease up and let the abrasives do the work. If your grinder slows down much, you’re doing it wrong, period. Lots of guys do this. It’s still just as stupid, no matter how common. It’ll also wear down your diamond abrasives faster. Second, it’s an abrasive. They all heat up the metal a ton. Third, the regular wheels aren’t worn out until they’re stupidly small nubs. The abrasive is impregnated throughout the cutting portion of the disk. If you can still reach the metal while maintaining the right cutting angle, keep cutting. If you have to change the angle, use a new disk. Smaller disks can be used to cut small pieces of metal where maintaining the angle is easier to avoid waste. The cutting wheels that are made out of steel have one advantage. They are safer to use because they can’t shatter like a fiber disk can. If you have to cut in a bad position, like under a car, or cutting pipes in a crawl space, it can be difficult to hold the tool perfectly straight. This is where they shine. If it saves you one trip to get stitches, it pays for itself many times over.

@@liv04soccer ive tried it and its good for some things. Mild steel. If you use it on hardened steel or stainless steel the blade will wear out super fast whereas abrasive wheels don't really care what kind of Steel you're cutting though, they cut pretty much the same. but if you're cutting mild Steel they do cut maybe 15 times faster which is an absolute Game Changer if you have to rip a sheet of quarter inch plate into four inch strips or something. So definitely worth it to buy one but I wouldn't use it on everything or else you're just going to wear it out super fast and waste a lot of money

Diablo, all around, makes an amazing blade. No shilling here, I've honestly done a lot of pro-sumer grade work with them and they still amaze me. Like all fast moving blades, though, heat is your enemy so take it slow and don't force ANY grinder mounted blade if you want a long lasting implement.

You will find that it cuts much better and safer if you drag the cutting wheel and don't try to deep cross cut like you are doing. If you keep pushing it through the work someday it is going to kick back and cut your gut open like it did mine. I went to the hospital with my guts hanging out. It took about eight months recovery before I could go back to work. I was very lucky it had not been my face. First make a groove across the material and then start following the groove a little bit at a time.

A few ideas worth sharing, if youre still getting your feet under you with cutoff disks, 1. get a 4 1/2 inch grinder that is only like 4 or 5 amps (harbor freight), disks just dont explode on those very often. 2. dont cut things that arent secured in a vice or clamp, if your work moves fast while cutting, youre going to blow the disk. 3. be extra careful when you finish the cut, if the work is under tension, or heavy, it can pinch the blade. This goes for any cut, but its worth noting. 4. I have a lunch box I keep my cutoff disks in, separate from my grinding disks or diamond blades, treat them like a cd, if they get smushed in the bottom of a tool box, or steped on, or a grinder rigged up with a disk gets dropped, even lightly, THAT is when you retire the disk without question. Keep them padded and stowed safely until you cut, then take it off the grinder for storage. any old disks that have been kicking around, ditch em. That will eliminate 75% of disks exploding. Good luck continuing to learn to weld bud!

I prefer the inexpensive standard Cut-Off Wheels in most cases. The Diamond Cut-Off Wheels require a much slower cut to get good results. But time is money, and in my opinion my time is more valuable then the cost savings of longer lasting Diamond Cut-Off Wheels, and the standard Cut-Off Wheels make a much nicer and cleaner cut. Cleaning up a cut from a Diamond Cut-Off Wheel is more time, effort and money. Best wishes...

@coffey3c
@coffey3c Жыл бұрын
I often use a diamond disc on copper pipe. Copper moves heat away much faster than steel, so even with the smaller pieces, the blade stays a bit cooler. Cutting a rounded/ hollow metal profile, gives you a much better chance of hanging/shattering a regular disc, which is compounded with workpiece moving around so much. Lastly, I do wind up cutting out old work at awkward angles and spaces. I use a Dewalt xp4 blade when plumbing with a ridged deburring tool.

Good video but as was said below, go slower and it cuts cleaner. Disadvantage: much slower (and perhaps rougher cut... I seem to get cleaner cuts than you got in the video). The advantages are: longer life (by far) and you need not worry about the wheel disintegrating and becoming a "grenade". I have crashed my metal / diamond cutoff wheels many times, to the point that they bent in use... yet they remain intact! AND, you can continue to use them... the little bends seem to straighten themselves out with use. So, IMO, these are best when you have to cut something in an awkward position where you might otherwise "crash" a fiber wheel and blow yourself up...
@nateberes6217

One pass along the edge and that cut is cleaned up. So the comparison is only for cleanliness of cuts? Seems like one cut is a small sample size to make a comparison. The big selling point is durability, ergo value. When i bought my angle grinder i got a few discs, flap wheel and this item. I was a little scared about wheels breaking after seeing some safe usage vids. Its been incredible! Can't say if it would last 100X longer because i have only burned through a few discs and this is going strong. I can say that at $10 and most wheels at Lowes (where i got everything) were $3 or more, its well worth it. For those with more experience than me, definitely worth a shot.
@WeldONE
@WeldONE 3 жыл бұрын
I dont recall from the video how many cuts I included, but definitely made 5-6 total cuts while making the video. Your point about its durability is valid, I don't doubt it will last longer than an abrasive disc but it takes longer to cut and the time you spend cleaning up the edges also adds up. just food for thought.

Respectfully, you're holding the angle grinder opposite of the path of travel. Recommend to NOT use it so it can kick back at you; rather, turn it 180 and allow the draw blade to spin clockwise and 'pull' into the metal. How you're holding it can certainly cause you a safety issue. #2. (@5:49) Your other blade is a 'cutting' blade, not a 'grinding' blade. You're confusing people my good sir. Mate, you need to educate yourself on the matter before posting undocumented stuff... It's not the brand which matters.. There are a few reputable manufacturers of such wheels and all perform similarly. It's not about a bit of burr, which can be handled by someone who operates an angle grinder, it's about the benefits of using such. First off, it will hold the cutting diameter. Imagine you have to do a long cut; what are your options, to exchange a ton of wheels, or simply use one which does not "melt" under your eyes? Second MAJOR benefit is safety; these wheels don't splitter. Third benefit is monetary; just do the math; 1000 cuts on a $15 wheel compared to three0five cuts on a $1.5 wheel... Next is the wheel dust of the traditional over zero dust from the metal/diamond one. Next benefit: No smell!!! That's a big one if you work in a living space (yes it so can happen that you need to cut something off at your or a customers home). Now, you keep going over traditional because you're to lazy to clean-up a cut... Merry Christmas!

The rules of thumbs I use are: Diamond is a tougher abrasive, but it usually cuts slower than an abrasive impregnated ablative disk. An abrasive disk does cut slightly cooler, because the abrasive/medium that is spent is thrown off taking away some of the heat. Still nothing controls heat and precision like a light touch and taking a bit more time. Diamond 'cut-off' wheels usually have a thin kerf, with diamond abrasive only along the outer edge. It wears out quickly, and leaves a rougher edge as you cut by hand, because only that very edge is grinding when you make contact of the side profile. With a regular grinding disk, which is fully impregnated the whole disk abrades the working material over it's entire surface... which leads to a much smoother edge/cut. (A stationary, or mounted tool, obviously cuts much better in either case, but I've never used one in the field. I grab a framing triangle, and use it to run a straighter cut using the grinder's blade guard... but for me, this is only a little better.) Mostly I use Diamond grinder blades when shaping and cutting tile. Honestly, that is where they really shine. Hand cutting I use the abrasive blades on metal... and I go get a shield if I'm doing more than a couple of cuts. On mild thin stock, such as you are using, I did one time pull out my own carbide diablo blade ($60 80-100T?), instead of the stack of ($10) cut-off discs. I'm afraid of those things, and I've never liked cutting with with a shrinking diameter blade; or worse, having to change the blade in the middle of the cut because you are trying to get the most out of the blades, and the saw bottoms out. Did I mention that a 12-14" blade can go half way through your head before you even know you're dead? The carbide worked well for me this one day, making lots of very reproducible cuts in smallish stock, but that's but that's not enough to give a strong recommendation. Clamp your workpiece; steady light pressure; steady advance. Good luck, and be careful. Cutting metal with a high speed tool is always inherently dangerous.

you want to hold grinder firmly but your pressing down way to hard and starting a cut at the rear and pressing forward is a big no-no start a plunge at the top or north and pull back maintaining the plunge depth all the way back maintaining good speed letting the tool work ..Your gonna get hurt and your gonna burn up a grinder bowing down on it like that. It's not a lumberjack competition.Keep all your parts where God intended...

Search for *Grinder Safety: How to Properly Use an Angle Grinder* for a more comprehensive guide. That video is about 45 minutes long but it is the most comprehensive and easy follow guide on how to use a grinder safely and most of the attachments available (and how to use them). About 1.8M views so far. Think of it as an insurance policy to your health so that you don't get hurt. No disrespect to the person who took the time to film and edit this video but the way he was holding, using and cutting with the grinder is BACKWARDS and DANGEROUS to those who would watch this video prior to using a grinder of their own. If you are right-handed, the screw on handle is mounted on the left (instead of on the right like they in this video). Also, the bottom of the cutting wheel should be facing left instead of right in this video. Why? the rotation of the grinder/wheel (most I am aware of) is clock-wise when looking at the top of the grinder. When cutting, the grinder/wheel should feel like it wants to move away from you instead of toward you. The sparks should be flying toward the floor and not away like this video. If you hold it wrong like this guy and you lose grip, the grinder/wheel will move toward you or your leg and you would be going to a hospital.
