Have you ever tried kiln carving as a fused glass project? Well, if not, watch as I kiln carve a couple of coasters. I'll show you a tried and tested technique, as well as an experiment, at least for me, to actually colour the carving.

Nice, both worked out really well. Like the bubbles in the first piece and a really nice effect on the second piece with the recessed colour and the opposite colours reflecting on each other. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jeff, what a great channel. Could you please do a video on protection of your glass kiln. And where you get your supplies in Aus.
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Debra. Thank you very much. Most supplies from Blue Dog Glass, otherwise, from wherever I can at the right price. Not many suppliers of Bullseye glass here, but Blue Dog work well for me. When you say protection of the glass kiln, do you mean maintenance or something like electrical protection, or personal protection?

I loved this one!! A couple of questions: 1. How much of difference would it make if you used 3m glass on the colored one vs the 2m? 2. You mentioned you might straighten out the sides and fire polish, would you have to put the fiber paper back under the shapes during the fire polish?
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dawn. Using 3 mm for both sheets of glass would be fine. The colour may be a little deeper, that's all. It depends with the fire polish. With those pieces I probably wouldn't. It's a bit like slumping strips in the video I did on weaving. Short spans of glass require more temp and time to slump. I keep the temp as low as I can for a fire polish. But if the carved area is wide, I would put fibre paper back so it didn't slump in the middle.

Hi Jeff and Happy Holidays to you and yours! I'm revisiting this video (thank you again) and am wondering what the results would be using 2 3mm pieces 1 would be opal with frit full fused and the 2nd piece having been kiln carved and then fusing the 2 together? Would the carving maintain after fusing? Thanks! ~H
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Helene. I'm assuming the opal is on the bottom and the carved piece (transparent??) is on top with the carving down between the 2 pieces. If down, I suspect you will get bubbles where the carving is as it'll trap air. If the carving is up a full fuse will remove it completely. Even a tack fuse will change the appearance, though that may not be too bad, depending on what you're trying to achieve. Have you considered filling the carved area with frit, either opal or transparent, and fusing it to form a solid piece? Then turn it upside down and fuse it to the base. That may be worth a try in a test piece.

I tried the method used in the yellow and blue coaster with neo-lavender opal and pink opal shapes and it worked beautifully. I added a frit powder silkscreen print on top and slumped it to make a sconce afterwards. Thank you for the ideas! Have you tried carving with organic items, such as a twig and leaves under the glass?

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Whenever I have tried kiln carving the fibre paper tends to stick to the back of the glass and I cannot get it off cleanly. Have you had this issue? How do you clean off the fibre paper?
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jan. So far, no problem with using the fibre paper for kiln carving. I think it's worth trying to fire at a lower temp, probably for longer. If the surface of the glass is softening too much that may be trapping the fibres. Have a great Christmas.

When you fire polish the one with the colored glass, do you have to back the elements of you design with fiber paper, or will it still retain the empty space on the back? Thank you!

Nice technique, what is the difference between tekta and regular glass from Bullseye glass. I try to Google it, but the results don‘t make any sense to me. Have to try that kiln carving, looks interesting.

I've used coloured frit on top of the fibre paper which worked well.
@patriciaandjeffbryantandcr8260
@patriciaandjeffbryantandcr8260 2 жыл бұрын
there is a slight difference in edge color using the Tekta version vs non Tekta. Most people use tekta for the price . It is trim cut too. Some people comment that if they are stacking with deep layers of glass that there is a tint to the edge of the fused glass with Tekta and regular 1101 vs regular 1401 which is the most colorless clear.

How did the turquoise coaster end up with bubbles?
@RocketRoseArt
@RocketRoseArt 9 ай бұрын
Hi Bill. Good question. I suspect there were bubbles in the glass, or that the slight difference in processing time between the glasses allowed air in as it settled around the fibre paper pieces. I didn't pay particular attention at the time so not sure.
@bobcanada3656
@bobcanada3656 2 жыл бұрын
I'm clearly seeing that your lack of clarity in your float glass is the result of a "temperature shock" that occurs in an improper cool down regimen during the cool down period. Let me know if I've peaked your curiosity.
@RocketRoseArt

Hi Bob. That's devit on the surface of the float glass, not anything in the glass.
@bobcanada3656
@bobcanada3656 2 жыл бұрын
@@RocketRoseArt Hi Jeff. I'm not talking of the surface and neither am I referring to the roughness imparted from the kiln paper on the bottom. but rather I'm contending there the internal blur or foggy look imparted inside the glass caused from internal shock without my cool down regimen. If you could produce a clear specimen. I would stand corrected. Of course we must temporarily place the piece in a puddle of water to clear up the roughness on the bottom before taking a picture.
@RocketRoseArt

@@bobcanada3656 Hi Bob. Not sure where you see that. It sure looks clear to me. Anyway, I don't do much with float glass and don't think I'll get into it much, at least for a while. Thanks for the info. If I do another project with float I'll have to check the schedule I'm using.
