Ever asked yourself "where does milk come from?" A few months ago, I purchased an American Devon/Jersey Cross Milking cow named Reba MilkEntire, and have spent a lot of time recently training her how to behave in the milking parlor, how to stand nicely in the milking stanchion, and how to be gentle with whoever milks her. Having my own dairy cow is an important part of the permaculture principles on my organic homestead. She provides so much more than raw milk for our homesteading family and farm community through our raw dairy herdshare program, we use her milk to make cheese, to make yogurt, to make whipped cream, to make butter, and of course I put a little in my morning coffee too. Her milk also provides sustenance for our bottle baby lambs, for our pigs, and her manure provides clean, rich organic compost for the garden. I'd never milked a cow by hand, but I've been milking my goats by hand for five years, so I knew I could figure it out. Having a family milk cow is wonderful. Reba has been incredibly patient with me and we have learned all the ins and outs of the milking parlor working together. Milking a cow by hand is a lot of work, but the relationship built with the animal and the rewards of that labor are many, bringing food from farm to table is the absolute best thing about homesteading.

I used to milk my Saanen goat twice a day for eight years - and she was only kidded once. Rare for a goat but of course impossible for a cow. I am amazed you are getting enough milk to make any sort of profit so well done!

When you said an hour to milk one cow, I started scratching my head because we used to milk a herd of 30 in a little over an hour, then I realized all the time that went into all the other things we did to get ready and then clean up after. Btw, when we would hand milk the cows, a few ornery ones would kick the pale and always try to swish their tail, covered in manure, into our face. My grandpa started hobbling the rear legs and made a moveabke extension for the head lock so the cow didn't have room to move, it would basically push in from the side and pin them against the wall. He made guides to be able to place 2 boards in front of their rear hooves to keep em from getting their hooves forward of their bag making milking a lot easier. After the stall was built, we didn't need the hobbles any more.

These videos take a while to edit after filming and thankfully she’s calmed down a lot in the two months since this was shot. She no longer even needs to be clipped into the stanchion (but I do anyway). I have had to hobble some naughty goats in my day though.

This was so interesting to watch, especially since most big farms use automatic milkers! The baby calf is so cute! Just a question : since you are milking the cow does the calf get some milk and if so when? Also will there be enough milk milk left after you finish milking for the calf? 😊
@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! The calf stays with mama so he actually gets first priority, we are just taking the “leftovers.” Most cows today, after being bred for hundreds of years to increase milk production, produce too much milk for their calves, so it is actually pretty important *to* milk a cow, after it calves, you just need to pay attention to the supply/demand for the sake of the calf.

Wow this is really cool! I wonder, is having a goat easier to take care of if one wants fresh milk? A cow takes 2 hours a day to milk and then you have to take care of the milk process. How much of your day does that consume? Do you have time for your other projects?
@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 4 жыл бұрын
Howdy! So the entire process actually takes two hours, not two hours plus the other stuff. It's very time consuming, yes, but there's a whole lot of hours left in the day :) Goats are much easier in some regard, I've been keeping nigerian dwarf goats for milk for the past 5 years, but they present their own challenges as well.

McKay Sleight not everyone is a fan and that’s totally fine. Over hundreds of years of breeding to produce more milk, most dairy cows now produce far more than their calves need. Our calves stay with the moms and we take the “leftovers” which with some cows is up to 3.5 gallons a day.

@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 4 жыл бұрын
You don’t “pull” on either of them, you just squeeze them differently. The cow’s teets are much bigger and there’s a lot more milk inside them, so you really just have to release the pressure, but with the goat and her tiny teets there’s just a little more work involved. It is actually really interesting to watch a goat kid nursing vs a calf, the goat kid is very violent by comparison.

There is no dairy cow. Just as there is no dairy woman. There is an animal that produces milk only when it is expecting a baby. They are always raped and exploited to produce milk for humans, and never for their young. and when males are born they are killed. and when she is female she lives to be explored.

@@AnneofAllTrades I haven't milked a cow for over 50 years, but ours must have been crankier than yours. If they didn't have kickers you were guaranteed to either get kicked or have the bucket knocked over. I'm glad yours is nicer. 🙂

I'm no expert, but I hope you are NOT using this first milk coming from the cow. I've heard that there is something that isn't right about the initial milk that a cow gives after having a calf. I can't say exactly, perhaps it is just not allowed for commercial sale in a dairy operation. I would check this with a local expert to be sure.

Respectfully, if you’re not an expert, comments like this are not helpful. Of course I would do research and consult experts before even purchasing an animal regardless of my intention for it. The first milk you are referring to is called colostrum, a vitamin rich milk intended to give the baby calf the nutrients and antibodies it needs to recover from the stress of birth and first days earthside. As is customary, I milked out the colostrum the calf did not need, froze some should we have a calf or other animal in need of colostrum in the unlikely case of a mother that dies in childbirth, and discarded the rest until the milk had returned to normal. This usually happens by day three or four, but certainly within a week.

@@AnneofAllTrades No disrespect intended, My parents were the farm kids, but it's something I heard in passing. Sounds like you have done much more research than I have. I am impressed with the job you have done since the move. I should have known better.
