Heaven help all of us booth owning artists and the management of most Renaissance Faires that will have to spend the next 10 years explaining to the patrons that most of us are not at all like this. That most faires are not at all like this. That most craftspeople and artists are not like this. That we are just normal people with mortgages and insurance and kids trying to make a living.

@@lizh1167 exactly, we are a large family, we accept everyone into our family and we vary in levels of being slightly odd but not in a bad way. It makes meal times and get togethers way more interesting than the average family BBQ. But this makes it seem like we are all calculating, creepy and cut throat. Not my experience with the many vendors we have been fortunate enough to do many shows with over the last 40ish years. Nothing like trying to drum up viewership by giving an entire community a bad name.

As someone who has been performing on the faire/festival circuit since 2004 (and attending since the early 90s), I can already tell this is going to be a Trainwreck. Also, a good chunk of faires began, Not to "be like George". **longest exasperated sigh, in soothe** Not to mention the massive cultural-economical differences between a Renaissance Festival that is year-round constructed, versus faires who are more flexible in theme/time period/setting in their niche and are composed of tents on large lots/parks........on-site faires like Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, Scarborough Faire, Kansas City, Sterling, Bristol, Michigan; tent faires like Midsummer Fantasy Faire, Medieval Faire of Norman, Heavener Viking Runefest, Celticfest, and so forth.

Yes! Back in the 80's, I worked at both of Phyllis Patterson's Living History Center Renaissance Faires: in Black Point Forrest in Marin County and down south at the now burned Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains (Agoura Hills) just north of LA. She was the one who started Renaissance Faires, and they were amazing! She was serious about EVERYTHING being period appropriate, allowing a fully immersive experience. It was such an wonderfully eclectic group of people that worked together to make it happen! Good times, indeed!

What? Who came up with this? The Renfaires were first invented by Phyllis Patterson, history teacher, and friends in the early 60's in Southern California as a benefit, I believe, for KPFA. Then they got very popular, and eventually the Pattersons became the owners of the Southern and then Northern California Renaissance Faires, and the rest is history as others developed Faires around the country. I did the New York, Maryland, and Arizona Renfairs for 20 years, and remember with great affection my life then.
@deborahnewbury9873
@deborahnewbury9873 Ай бұрын
Close. Phyllis started out by planning and executing a summer continuing education event for the school her son attended, Laurel Canyon Elementary school. The program was very successful, and has a history teacher, she saw the potential for an event open to the public to fund more educational programs. I wasn't there for the earliest years, but did attend the workshops Phyllis gave on how the Faire started. By the time I became involved, it had been a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) educational corporation for some time, and the whole purpose of the public part of the Faire on weekends was to make possible the education portion during the week. Schools would send entire classes of kids, from elementary schools on up to middle schools, and a select few of the performers and artisans would be there to get the kids involved in hands-aspects of life in the Renaissance. Once inside, those kids saw nothing that was period-appropriate and as historically accurate as we could make it; it was as close to time travel as is possible to do.

Yes Phyllis and Ron Patterson started the first and original Renaissance Faire in the very early 60s - it was a benefit for KPFK, the Southern California Pacifica . They also taught at ISOMATA (the Idyllwild, School of Music and the Arts) in California, which was run by USC. They held their prototype faire - a Gypsy Faire there in 1962 I believe, a year or two before the first Renaissance Faire. I worked at the Faires for many years, mainly in SoCal.

Comment section is a tribute to the Gell-Mann effect: Reading a newspaper article (or documentary) on a subject you know a lot about and seeing how badly they get it wrong, then turning the page and automatically believing whatever else they are reporting on. I've worked at this faire for 12 years. Not sure if any of this is supposed to be real. Every faire is different, mainly because of the owners, and George is far from a typical owner. This is a unique faire and a unique story and very likely fictionalized in certain ways. However he may well be the most successful of all because he kept putting money back into his festival instead of taking profits and crying poverty when it comes to upgrading or paying performers. The amount of money flowing at TRF is staggering. Never met the man but there are stories and most of them are probably true. The whole concept is fascinating to me; power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It's a TRAILER designed to grab interest. I'll wait for the full episodes to determine how Ren faires in general come off. I've seen some pretty bad ones already. And people in general have no idea (and misconceptions) if they have not actually attended a real one. Great production and interesting concept to base it around the power struggles.

@@mysticpirate Sadly, it's probably both. Word is Darla was led from the grounds of TRF in handcuffs last year, Jeff was already hired and fired as GM and is now back as Entertainment director as far as I know, and I have no idea how Louie would handle things if he got the "throne". All I know is that whoever it is will need to actually set aside their ego for a bit to take a hard look at what needs to be done to move TRF forward. In some ways George is a big picture guy, in that he always had an umbrella vision for the Festival, but most of that vision involved catering to his eccentricities. TRF needs a massive amount of infrastructure work on the grounds, and also needs to have a complete financial audit so whoever becomes the new owner knows what the situation is. It's pretty much guaranteed to be a shitshow regardless.

Brilliant marketing for the 50 year anniversary season. If it didn’t have drama and “Heros and Villains” it wouldn’t be a show. Just like the mini series “Chernobyl” was overly dramatized, it’s why it got all the views.

@@Bfordandafter I don't think this is about the everyday life of a Rennie tho. This is about people in leadership positions at the biggest monstrosity of a Ren Fest in the country, and wanting to control that multi-million dollar enterprise.
