Flamboyant as he is, Shadow Kanji touched on an important issue you rarely see handled in media. Not homosexuality, rather masculinity and expectations on men. I've seen too many men who put up tough facades, decry anything remotely feminine or gay because they're afraid indulging in those interests would make them shadow kanji - some silly, weird, perverted dude who everyone laughs at. And sad part is society often treats them like that if they DO engage in interests not deemed masculine. "Oh, that's boy in sewing class? Must be gay! And that one likes to wear pink? He must be really weak and a crybaby! And dude over there cried at the movie! What a wuss!". It's a toxic as hell mindset. Like Kanji said it ultimately had nothing to do with his sexuality, more-so that society tends to treat men who fall outside the norm as gay, so the two issues end up overlapping despite in reality having nothing to do with each other. As for his sexuality, I'm personally happy it's left up in the air. It's not what matters, and as someone who's still not sure about their own sexual identity I appreciate a character who are in that same ambiguous spot. Some of us don't want to cling to a label, we'd rather just be who we are and let life take us where it leads us.
@joanjoestar32524 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's weird how everyone focuses on the aspect of him being gay, to me the most powerful line that he says is What does it mean to be a guy? What does it mean to be manly? Because really embodies almost all his points
@lily_the_bird4 жыл бұрын
the truth thanks to those same labels, there is a lot of maleness. because there are those who believe that women should be cooking and must be tightly raised and with children. And I say, whoever wants to, if you are a man and you like to sew, do it. If you want to be a police officer and you are a woman, do it. for no one says that it is "feminine" and that it is "masculine". Since it is not good to live on labels. But how society will not change. People will continue to live in hell. It is one of the reasons why, as a woman, I quit sewing.

True enough. I’m a guy that enjoys gardening and crafts yet many people have always made fun of me for that. Like, what the hell is wrong with liking flowers? It’s a part of biology! What’s wrong with liking to decorate baskets or sewing a quilt? I could really use one to choke the life out of you.
@eternalgaming97054 жыл бұрын
Basically, typical stereotypes (why did we even invent them I have no idea). Now because of these society thinks one precise thing about something and when it doesn't go as they want they go for the option that you're different and weird. So, what do they do? Accept for who you are? Nuh-uh. They think of you as a joke of nature and someone that isn't something.

Shadow kanji did show the effect of toxic masculinity. He was traumatised by the girl talking behind his back for his sewing hobby. Thus his subconscious ponder if a man will accept him. @notimetoexplain80636 жыл бұрын
Chad Saturday He's a guy with "girly" hobbies which girls reject and call him gay for and guys don't really understand. This is why he overcompensates by being rough to the point that guys are scared of him (like the dudes who commented about him at school) but in reality, he doesn't really understand what being a guy is supposed to be like. So both genders reject him. He just seeks acceptance of who he is, a guy who likes art and sewing. People often misinterpret this as a sign of homosexuality which is what Kanji mistakes as something he has but all he wants is to expose himself and be accepted (which is why the shadow's in his undergarments"

+Liam Canney I think it has nothing to do with sexuality at all, I think it's more just him being accepted by anyone, anywhere. He's a guy who's into what's considered feminine activities, but he himself doesn't like acting that way. This way, he doesn't really fit in with the girls because they called him weird and stuff like that. He fits in slightly better with guys, but because of his tough guy attitude, he doesn't really fit in anywhere. Therefore, he wants to be accepted by any person, male or female. Not necessarily in a sexual way.

As someone who's always been terrified of what others think of me, and not just in terms of sexuality, I can relate with Kanji quite a lot. We're all scared of how other's perceive our interests, some girls have more male orientated interests but are afraid of revealing them to others due to some rather... hurtful labels. The same can be said of boy's and rumors of them being gay, or wusses, so on and so forth It's about accepting yourself in the end, but as Kanji's social link shows, even after facing all those ugly doubts and insecurities it's still hard to come to terms with them. It's scary to realize that you don't know yourself as well as you thought, but sometimes it's also scary to realize that's okay. It's okay to be who you are, but you know deep down this is going change your worldview, and who you are fundamentally all over again. And that's terrifying.

His attraction to Naoto is something I'd put down to the relationship that develops over time, mostly from seeing how it's dealt with the anime: when they first meet and Naoto says that she finds him "interesting," Kanji takes that as Naoto (in disguise) is possibly attracted to him and he is relieved at having possibly found another gay man in Inaba, but after learning Naoto's a girl, it may be possible the feelings he has for her are more personal than just a basic attraction towards gender Kanji DOES accept that his sexual preference is towards men, but from the relationship he and Naoto develop in the end by comparison to his relationships with the other girls, I'm guessing that he's not "completely" bisexual, but he does care about her on a close emotional level ... Persona 4 is definitely one of the best games on both the PS2 and Vita, and I'm glad they gave it a re-release. It's thought-provoking and challenging. You WILL die (granted, sometimes to cheap shots but that comes with being a SMT series game), but it never makes you want to stop playing because the story and combat are both so engaging. It's unfortunate that the randomly-generated maps to explore in are average at best, nothing compared to the genius that was Nocturne's (SMT3) dungeons. Still, I would recommend this game to ANYONE, gamers and non-gamers, whether they enjoy JRPGS and turn-based combat or not.

I absolutely love how even after what happened here and Kanji sorts out his inner demons, excessively homosexual Shadow Kanji is pretty much a recurring joke regardless. It gets bought up more than the other characters, and I think subsequent appearances of Shadow Kanji in the spinoffs have the same over-the-top personality even when they don't have any reason to do so.
@carlyl20325 жыл бұрын
I don't think this matters, but I don't read Kanji as being gay or bisexual. Kanji's shadow is struggling with his traditionally feminine interests, like knitting and liking cute things. His meeting with Naoto makes him automatically attracted, which is why he goes haywire - it's the first time he's attracted to someone, and he thinks Naoto is a man. This makes him confused and fearful that he is, until he learns from his shadow battle it doesn't matter what he is, just that he should accept himself. That's the major takeaway of Kanji. Although I personally don't think he is gay or bisexual, what matters is being able to accept yourself for who you are regardless of how you or the world labels yourself.
@lordofthecuttingmoon4 жыл бұрын
From what I know and understand of the game, this is the most sensible explanation. A guy who has interests that don't exactly fit with the normal perception of his age and gender and his subconscious mind internalizing it, how he's worried society would see him for having even a slight deviance from the common idea of 'this is a man', and what it might really mean for him as a person. If I recall correctly, it was also just him and his mom. So him taking up sewing and knitting are natural extensions of that situation. He's helping his mom and likes doing it so there's nothing wrong. Even though society at the time might act like the "lack of a strong male influence" led to him being to be different. Then in walks a girl who pretends to be a guy and, even though he thinks she's a "fellow male", he likes her. Maybe more than likes her. Real screwball to his already tense subconscious that's judging him like he thinks society would. Though there's nothing wrong with liking cute things, regardless of gender or age. It's just that our own individual tastes would change what cute applies to. What's typecast as 'cutesy' or 'cute to women' might be a generalization but... Yeah, parental influence does have influence there. And even with a dad in the picture, Kanji might be interested anyway. He likes art and cuteness? So what? If it's not manly to have an interest in something more than fighting, best get rid of the stereotype. But it doesn't change that what does matter is that he should be willing to accept himself and the fact that yes, he likes those things, they do not detract from his "man cred", he doesn't have to explain a thing about it. And if anyone has a problem with it, too damn bad. I personally think it's really manly if you can cook, clean, and sew. Not to mention, it shows potential romantic partners that you're appealing in more ways and can support them when they need it. Though it doesn't really help that his peers, also teens who are also figuring themselves and sociocultural and gender roles out, don't really know or accept much about themselves either.

@lgnd2k34 жыл бұрын
@@anubis7457 Not necessarily? He says specifically "it aint about guys or chicks" in reference to the shadows words about girls being scary and preferring men. That's not him saying he'd date guys or girls, just him saying it's not about who it is provided they accept him (not necessarily in a sexual or romantic way)
@TheBlackknight7208 жыл бұрын
This feels so dumbed down compared to the original P4 version. In the original none of them had any weaknesses and Nice Guy would spam Heat Riser/Tarukaja on the other 2 whenever possible. Here it looks like Shadow Kanji uses status moves and his normal attack mostly (aka his least threatening moves) while Nice Guy casts only single stat buffs and actually wastes turns attacking :( In short they nerfed the boss's attacks AND made him easier to kill. This fight looks really easy now compared to the original P4 which is kinda sad because I liked the challenge :/
@TOANYBJs7 жыл бұрын
TheBlackknight720 yup. When I first started playing Persona 4, I got rekt SO BAD by Shadow Kanji. Like seriously, it's one of the most annoying boss fight ever. But seeing the P4G, it's easy af. You can literally beat it even being underleveled
@thedragon127 жыл бұрын
Right ! When I play P4G it was easy to kill'em. I recently bough p4 on ps3, and ahah it was a really difficult fight but got it after like 20 minutes lol

Shadow Kanji puts on a show of being as gay as possible, to try and be more acceptable to Kanji, because it manifested from fear of rejection. The fight isn't simply resolved by Kanji accepting that fear, he knocks some sense into his other self to make his shadow accept itself.
