This past weekend I had the opportunity to see the beauty that is AT&SF 3751, a Baldwin 4-8-4 steam locomotive, make her return to San Bernardino for their Railroad Days. The Locomotive, along with a Metrolink F59PH (used for HEP power), pulled a train of various private rail cars down the Metrolink San Gabriel Subdivision, through towns that used to see steam MANY years ago. This video shows my complete chase of the train, as it took the trip to San Bernardino on Saturday, and returned to LA on Sunday. Please enjoy my video, and check out my video of last year's event as well.
Saturday 4/21/12
1) Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (LAUPT)
2) Pace down the I-10 Freeway
3) Merced Ave, Baldwin Park
4) Campus Ave, Upland
5) San Bernardino Amtrak Station
Sunday, 4/22/12
6) San Bernardino Amtrak Station
7) Mountain Ave, Upland
8) Pace down I-10 Freeway
9) Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (LAUPT)
10) First Street Bridge, Los Angeles

To be fair there is a deisal engine there so I'm guessing the steam engine isn't doing all the work.

The diesel is for the Head End Power to supply the passenger cars in tow. The steamer is actually the one truly pulling the train. She's actually mechanically sound!

The diesel is required by rail road regulations as 1) electrical power to the power to passenger cars, 2) in the event of mechanical failure of the steam engine it can be used to move the train to a safe location. If you run these boilers at a lowered pressure, that means lowered temps. Cold running the boiler is not healthy and is very costly to reverse the damage done by doing so. Just listening to her pull out of the station you can hear her doing all the work.

Its a real treat to see this old girl still running. Everyone enjoys it, i mean come on, even the helicopter was following it! There's just something romantic about steam engines. Its like they're alive. Long live steam!

Even as a little kid, I've often wondered what it would be like to see a rail line travel down the middle of a high way system, even more so to see a steam locomotive do it. Imagine my surprise to find out that's exactly what good old 3751 has been up to!

24 Jan 2107. Robert Shaw you've nailed it. For the younger generation who never had the experience of s steam locomotive troop train or watched a steam locomotive pull Ringling Brothers and and Barnum's Bailey's circus train pull into the yard at 0500 in the morning to commence unloading. I was lucky my parents would let me at about age 9 take the MKT from Tulsa to Bartlesville, OK , by myself. Wow! What a treat!! I had several memorable steam locomotive cab train rides in S. Korea in 1946 and maybe I will write about them someday. Thanks, Roberte! john

When steamers first move out, water is cleared out by blowing it directly out of the exhaust ports. After they are clear & sufficiently hot, the steam is rerouted into the smokebox. During this time, the draft is increased by use of the blower, hence the smooth flow of smoke out of the stack.

Consider some of the greatest sound humans can hear. A 747 winding up the engines and taking off. A Saturn 5 rocket leaving the pad and a steam locomotive racing starting up. What is it about the Chu-Chu-Chu of those things that make people so profoundly affected. Power. The sight of such a huge thing even moving.. But the sound - that incredible sound of steam blasting up the stack. Almost better than sex.

Air brakes and onboard electrical power are dervived from a smaller engine attached to the side of the locomotive, responsible for the high pitched whine often heard in videos of these engines. The steam you see is from the petcocks. When the engine has stood still for a while, the cylinders cool off and condense some of the incoming steam. If water from this is allowed to build up, it could cause the engine to throw a rod or knock a head off. Having the petcocks open lets it drain out.
