Elgato's latest capture card is here - the Elgato HD60 X. This is a new evolution in the "HD60" line of capture cards (bringing End of Life to HD60 S and HD60 Pro) that captures a lot of formats and allows for VRR, Variable Refresh Rate, Adaptive Sync, FreeSync passthrough. But what about GSync? Let's talk about this.

HDFURY UPDATE: It turns out that, at least currently, the VRROOM can NOT scale VRR in the device, despite being advertised as such. Disabling VRR seems to get a stable 4K120 - 1080p120 signal for me, but I haven't tested thoroughly. The "Key Features" marketing suggests very much that it can and this was a BIG motivator behind me getting the device, so this is very disappointing - but they might be able to get it working in a future firmware update.

To be fair, they've had language on the product page saying that VRR downscaling was a TBD feature since at least December of last year according to Way Back Machine. I was going to purchase earlier this year until I saw that.

wow, 2 frames of lag is pretty damn impressive for a USB device- nice work Elgato! That's on par with my measurements for the Datapath E1s when set to unbuffered mode. Thanks EposVox for consistently great coverage of new streaming tech!

I've been using for two days this HD60 X with a GBS-Control (DIY retro scaler). This thing is AMAZING, it is even compatible with the out of spec signal of my modded Super Nintendo running at 59,550hz. Awesome!! My only complaint is the crackling sound while capturing, ONLY while capturing, the final recording is perfect. Let's see if a can fix it... Best channel about this kind of devices, thank you so much.

This card is pretty impressive with VRR, high refresh rate passtrough and low latency preview all in in an external formfactor over standard usb 3. For me however the biggest worry is wether it can passtrough multichannel audio or not. This is kind of a dealbreaker of u play shooters with a surround headset like me and is a problem i currently have with my hd60s. If it does support this feature than this card is basicly a cheaper Avermedia live gamer bolt but if not, than the bolt is still superior albeit at a much higher pricepoint.

Great review as always on this. Looks like an all around great USB capture option though. I hope Aver media comes out with a proper 2.1 VRR solution this year.

I "fixed" the issue of no VRR and max 144Hz instead of 240Hz for me (on the gaming monitor) while capturing. I connected the gaming PC to a second 1440p monitor, but this is 60Hz, and I put OBS there with a fullscreen preview of the game capture, then capture that monitor with the capture card on the streaming PC (I use the Elgato 4K60 Pro Mk. 2). In some games even in fullscreen mode, the mouse goes to the second monitor, but Dual Monitor Tool fixed it it seems (I just hold the right Ctrl to let me move my mouse cursor to the second monitor when I need that). Doing it this way is not as clean a setup as I wanted, but it works for what I play. I haven't noticed a performance hit doing this, and VRR works as if I was using a single PC for streaming and recording.

I just returned my Razer Ripsaw HD (with a day to spare before the return window was up, no less) just so I can order the HD60 X! I just hope it plays nicely with LG OLED TVs.

Can you make a video talking about why capture cards don't just.. work perfectly? Something explaining why we can't just have VRR, whatever framerates we want at whatever resolution, and why it is taking so long to see seemingly minor improvements every few years? To me and I assume others it is frustrating getting all these limitations and weird workarounds just to send a video signal. Again I don't have much knowledge in this arena that is why I would love a video explaining why things are so slow and limited.

Largely because the bandwidths involved are too fast to generically capture and encode at a signal rate close enough to the raw signal to not get degradation. So specialised hardware needs to be created to capture and encode, and making custom chips / FPGA is an expensive and complicated market, for a relatively niche product.

You can use FreeSync with an Nvidia GPU and VRR capture with the HD60 X, but it requires a laptop with an Nvidia GPU and AMD CPU with integrated Radeon graphics. On most laptops, the iGPU passes through the dGPU output and it is what interfaces directly with the monitor. One of my laptops has an RTX 3050 and AMD iGPU. It works just fine with my Dell FreeSync monitor since the iGPU handles the VRR handshake, not the Nvidia GPU. Even using Nvidia's own G-Sync demos, like the pendulum, the VRR works flawless. My older laptop, with Intel CPU and 1660 Ti GPU, won't do VRR on anything. I captured some VRR gameplay last night and it seemed to work fine. Elgato's capture utility reported the source framerate changing correctly and the captured video looked tear-free as well. It's a very specific solution to the problem, probably too niche for most, but I've been using it to great effect for the past year.

I just got a VRROOM delivered a couple days ago, really hoping it'll allow me to use my displays to their almost full potential (still waiting on HDR for cloned displays in Windows) while still capturing 4K60 in my steaming PC.

I have Windows 11 and a GTX 1660 Super and I have the same issue where every time I set the resolution to 1440p then the refresh rate to 120 hz it drops to 1080p. Have you found a fix for that yet? I'm debating on returning it.

Thank you for your grateful review. Could you please tell me about "31 ms latency"? This means 2 frame lag , but I got 3 frame lag on my OBS & HD60 X. So I hope that your PC environment and OBS settings when you got 31ms.

i have elgado hd60s+ and had a lot or problems with bandwidth, only way i have have it working on my macbook is using tb3 cable straight usbc-usbc that end it black screens and errors

I’ve a question and idk where to ask for help, I have the best settings for streaming and recording and I can only get 720p from it, also the colors look a little bit washed out and I’ve done everything to fix it, it’s better quality if I record the display straight from obs, I need help because it was not plug and play!

Just bought this yesterday! and having a problem with HD60x showing as black screen for Mac M1 Pro in OBS using PS5, tried to disable HDCP off and turned on the screen record in privacy & security. Not sure whats the issue.

Thanks for the detail review on this. I just ordered mine today to replace the HD 60S+ on my stream pc. Looking forward to using it. I actually use a 4k 60pro in the game pc so I can output my consoles to it and use OBS on my game PC when playing consoles. Complicated setup, but I love how it works.

Hey epos, could you tone down on the bloom a little bit? Your content quality is insane to be pushed down with that neon/bloom/glow effect. I can't watch the recent videos because this effect makes things just so hard to focus on and I feel like I have astigmatism. It's really not good in terms of accessibility I know it's a theme of the channel, outrun, synthwave neon stuff but I think it's not being very effective in this case. And you already have a lot of very good effects to pass the feeling of old school stuff. Where this isn't that much needed and doesn't add a lot. Thanks man, thank you for taking your time to make these contents, I know it's hard work.

Unfortunately, I have a lot of problem with hd 60 x, I tried a lot of things but I have sluttering/minifreezes in preview with OBS, SLOBS, 4k Capture utility, I contacted the support but at the moment no solution. I used my pc computer and a laptop to test nintendo switch but nothing, all setup is ok. (I tried too with laptop at 1080p/1140p 60FPS without luck) Where the least happens to me is in virtual dub 2, but after 5-8mins starts freezes making uncomfortable to play games sadly. My only purpose is play in preview, no record or streamming.

Awesome video!! I ordered the HD60X the moment it was announced (I have cutting edge tech FOMO, haha!). I'm a huge retro gamer and I'm excited that it's super compatible with retro gaming and can work with both the OSSC's and RetroTink's super duper resolutions! I'm stoked to see how it performs when paired up with the RetroTink 5X-Pro as well!!

Update:This capture card doesnt come ready to use off the box. I experienced audio crackling on 2 hd60x cards, image issues and stuttering. Also my image froze and I had to keep messing with the cables in order for it to work. I suggest you skip it and wait until someone else puts out a better product

If I set my Xbox Series X to 1440p and 120Hz with this capture card set to 1440p 60hz for recording on a M1 MacBook Pro. Should I use a USB-C to USB-A dongle or get a USB-C to USB-C cable and connect it directly? Any other tips for this setup to work good?

All of elgato capture cards give me micro stutters or screen tear. Is this the card to fix all that? I tried all the troubleshooting from elgato and nothing. Currently using avermedia GC573 that works better than elgato but I want something better. I just want to record smooth gameplay 1080 60fp for ps5 for xbox series x

if this card can do 4k120 passthrough with vrr and 1080p capture -- its perfect for linux users. VRR is enabled out of the box in KDE wayland (pretty sure it is for gnome too) Now you have me curious about this one. Considering I have a 4k 144hz monitor and several amd cards to try I may give this capture device a try

Nvidia added some time ago 'fast vsync". It solved the tearing completely, while I run full fps on the stream pc. 👍

Still has some additional input delay. But yes, it's a good alternative if your hardware can run it.

@@CrisURace Everyone is different. Depends on your set-up, there are many factors that come into account. Practically speaking however it's ~17-25% additional input lag compared to no-sync. Imagine it like a max pre-rendered frames 2 in a sense.

Are you able to do audio extraction/pass through from console to pc with low or non-existent delay? I’ve been waiting for hdmi 2.1 audio extractors so I can get the full suite of features with my Series X, but It’d be amazing if I could do that and also have the recording functionality that the hd60x offers as well.

I mainly want to use it to stream retro games from my MiSTer and some of the computers and consoles has weird resolutions and frame rates. Would this be the best capture card now other than the Datapath E1s (is this even possibly better?)

Okay so I have a ps5 playing 120 frames and the new hd 60x I’m using an older lab top Ge Force GTX 1050 TI with i5 processor is there specific setting I need to run for it to work right now my stream is all choppy and laggy.

31ms is very playable as a way to play console through PC. Used to play my PS4pro though a ~60ms capture card and apart from the most action intensive games it was already fast enough. 30m s will be good for all but competitive shooters, fighting games and rhythm games.

What's the best way to capture a PC, whilst also passing through and allowing Gsync, 144hz and 1440p resolution? I'm assuming a 4k capture card like the internal Elgato one, and duplicating my main display onto it?

If you want to use GSync, obs projector preview is your main usable option. Cloning with gsync is a bad time

two pc stream setup here... here are my problems with GSYNC. P1:since there is no gsync compatible capture card atm, i need to duplicate(through display cloning in windows) my 120hz gsync signal to a 120hz hdmi out and capture that output instead. P2: Since i ve hd60 pro only, and its max acepted refreshrate is 60, i need to set both displayport (gysnc) and HDMI(recording) outputs to 60hz. And even that does not solve the issues.. P3: Because gsync to be active, requires your "fps" to stay just beneath the max display refresh rate. . So when my gpu gives 59-60 fps , gsync treats it as a non gysnc signal, and when fps drops to 57(just 2 two frames below max refreshrate) gysnc activates, and when framerate goes back to 59-60 fps, gsync gets inactive and this switching of gysnc-on/off does not yield smooth results. Now, the solution looks like i need a 120hz capture card and this capture card looks like a temporary solution until proper gysnc capturing cards(on which they have display port input and out ports) arrive

Your older rig that was mentioned to be trashing your recordings, is exactly what's happening to mine -- With FX 8350 and 1060 (6GB Version). It's a shame, because it was fine way before NDI became a thing, even before upgrading from the 6300 to a 8350. Overclocked everything performance wise. The stuttering, even though OBS was not showing any dropped frames or any kind of lag at all, my Elgato Capture Cards just can't handle the outdated rig anymore. Perhaps it had to do with updates from Microsoft, or Elgato themselves. Who knows, but I have no future, for now, to upgrade my streaming/recording system to something more modern. I'm also not looking forward to bring my setup down to a Single PC either. :( Another thing, NDI recently is becoming less and less reliable with either the OBS Plugin or it's own. Same stuttering problems there, and confusing games to go back and forth from 60hz to 144hz all day long, no matter the game. I reinstalled my OS, but that didn't help much. :( Oh well. You're not the only one with such a curse. Lol

Unfortunately the NDI plugin seems to have been abandoned. It still uses an older version of NDI (it uses v4 but we’re on v5 and it’s amazing) and doesn’t support the great compressed NDI HX modes or anything :( I’d recommend installing the new NDI Tools from Newtek’s website and using the Screen Capture tool to send your desktop over NDI to OBS on second PC. Will probably work better for you.

@@EposVox NDI HX seems to be bit buggy. The audio in recordings skip when I check the clip, not quite sure what's up with that. But like the OBS Plugin for NDI (v4) and capturing from capture cards, games don't seem to know what to do with refresh rates -- bouncing from 60 to 144hz. I'm still getting the same kind of stuttering, but less often. Even less stutter when I bring down the refresh rate to 120hz, but.. it feels like an arm and a leg chopping down my refresh rate to even get any smoothness in my recordings. It's probably best that I make do with what I got. The stuttering isn't that extreme anymore, but I wish it would just stop coming back.

Does this new card work if plugged in to a USB Hub…? For some reason Live Gamer Ultra (usb 3.1) fails video signal on OWC thunderbolt dock, but when using the older live gamer portable 2plus (usb 2.0) works fine! Why?

I'm confused here, you say you can't use VRR on Nvidia cards because it doesn't support G-Sync just Freesync/VESA VRR, but haven't Nvidia cards supported Freesync/VESA VRR for years now? I thought they renamed the original G-Sync to G-Sync Ultimate and started supporting Freesync/VESA VRR but refer to it as G-Sync (to be extra confusing lol).

You can use GSync on FreeSync monitors through a forcing option they allowed - but you can't do it with capture cards here.

Thanks for video. Bought this card. Have a question is your secret sauce video is actual now? If yes, will it work with “very fast” or there is no reason. Also when I set color range l realise I dont know what to do with “buffering” parameter. Is it ok to disable it?

Those x264 flags will do nothing productive for the VeryFast preset. If you can only do VeryFast (or even Fast) just use gpu encoding

Im happy to see that i can play in 4K60 HDR now and stream the same time on FullHD60 for the stream. But they could do more 😭 My dream capture card is this: - 4K120 HDR VRR pass trough - 4K60 HDR recording - Integrated switch so you can plug in your PC, PS5 and Nintendo Switch at the same time without the need of switching cables aaaaaall the time - More outputs (switchable) so i can put it into my pc when i want to stream and play on my monitor and one plug into my tv whenever i play on the sofa off stream. So i dont have to switch cables here aswell THIS would be the ultimate capture card for me. Bring this and charge me what you want. Would solve all the problems i have right now..

I got myself the HD60X and what can I say? As far as I am concerned, you can play in OBS without an issue. That being said, I am a casual player, definitely nowhere near competitive gaming. I do not own a gaming display, let alone a 120hz or 240hz monster. So take my comment with a grain of salt. Still… to me, this card is pretty much perfect, even If I don’t use pass through. The difference in delay is there, but it’s negligible to me.

Anyone know the HD60 X wont allow me to play on 1440p 120 hz on my Xbox series x. Only maxes out on 1080p 120hz. I always play 1440 120 but once plugged into my elgato, it doesn’t work. Please help.

On the device tab try changing the edid from merged to display then hit apply try unplugging the device then replugging it in and see if that works.

Hi, i have 4K60 Pro and it's really awful. Quality creates slow stuttering and cutting the audio. I got one years ago and still has an issue. I think it's because of heating from graphic card below it that causes to inhale inside the heat (similar to 2:39). I don't know. But i've been thinking to get this one and hopefully wouldn't have a mess like this one. I don't have HDR on in game and my monitor supports both FreeSync and GSync with 144Hz and HDR (Dell Q3223Q). Both are turned off because i don't care for extra saturations feature. Did you come accross to any issue with this? I didn't on Elgato Game Capture HD that i used for years till i got in 2018 4K60 Pro. Still to this day that doesn't work right, even with updated RTX 2080Ti.

If I want to capture PS5 and upload my videos to KZfaq in 1440p (to trigger the better video codec). Is how do I do it the best way? Is it to get a pcie capture card and record in 4k60 and down scale the footage in premiere? Or can I do some OBS shenanigans like feeding OBS with the 4K feed and letting OBS output 1440p and record that? (I’m not streaming just recording)

@@EposVox Thanks for the reply. The thing is I record my PC games in 1440p (use OBS output to record the game and graphics + webcam). I don't really want to deal with two different resolutions. That's why I want to downscale the PS5 capture. But maybe it's the easiest to just set up a different instance of OBS in 4k just for PS5 and deal with having 2 different resolutions.

Well you can still put the 4K capture on a 1440p obs canvas and benefit. Would be better results. But if you want USB this or something like the asus tuf cu4k30

@@EposVox I thought there might be some weird scaling issues putting a 4k source on a 1440p canvas. But I guess it's worth trying. USB would be nice but I want 60fps and I guess USB3 just don't have the bandwith to support 4k60. So I'll have to get a PCIe card. Is the Live Gamer 4K still the best PCIe capture card? It's a shame that PS5 can't output 1440p. Love your content. I'm learning a lot.

4K -> 1440p and 1080p -> 1440p will have the same scaling factors, only 4K has more information to work with, so theoretically would be better as there's more to sample and smooth out the scaling. I still can't believe Sony never added 1440p to PS4 Pro or PS5

Does anyone know why I can’t put my series X to 4K 60hz using this? I have a 144 hz 4K monitor and my ps5 works fine with this in 4K but the Xbox goes right to 1080 when I put 4K on. Makes no sense

Try setting it manually to 60hz first. It’s probably trying to hit 120hz instead and can’t do that at 4K. May need to manually set the display EDID in the 4K Capture Utility app to 4k60 too

I mean the reason I’m still considering the Asus is because of the controller and headphone support I don’t know if that’s an edge over the Elgato or it’s still the same thing but I have trouble linking my PC audio (like music, stream alerts) and my console audio to my headphones so I could hear everything

Thank you for this video. So. .. HDR tone mapping to OBS still can’t be done. That’s so disappointing. I remember buying your LUTs for streaming RE Village but we should not be doing this with a new card. Bad. So so bad. Thanks for talking about this in your video.

That’s not about the card, just OBS doesn’t have a HDR pipeline yet. But it’s coming, just requires a big overhaul and takes time

@@EposVox yeah but it is still frustrating that even in the official video Elgato says with “on board tone mapping” we can convert hdr to SDR with OBS or any software. They lied with HD60S+ and they lied again now. Thanks for the explanation. You are the only one who talked about this in all the video reviews I watched.

Wait what? With both the HD60S+ and X if you play in HDR it will send a SDR tonemapped feed to OBS. That wasn't a lie. I'm confused,

@@EposVox but with colors completely messed up … only 4K Capture Utility can get a correctly tone mapped picture. OBS gets it all wrong. You even have a video about this … this is where I bought your Luts from haha. Elgato advertises it as if we got a perfect conversion in any software.
