Kenmore 80 Series Washer Lid Switch Repair - won't drain or spin

This captures the steps to repair a Kenmore 80 series washer with a bad lid switch. The broken switch keeps it from draining or spinning. The switch can be bypassed on the connector, which I am showing in the video but you are better of replacing it. I bought a new lid switch through e-bay, which cost me about $10 plus shipping. The repair takes only about 30 minutes and can save you a lot of money instead of calling in a repair man or buying a new washer. Overall this washer had been very reliable and I intend to keep it for another couple years.

A big thank you for producing a spot-on step-by-step video for fixing the switch problem as the plastic housing unit had split in half. It took me 30 minutes from start to finish and saved me $100+ for repair/replacement. I had to order the switch which took over a week to get here so I just taped the unit up into place for temporary use. Thanks again!

Happened to me yesterday. Thanks for mentioning that it's glued together. By pushing on the bottom side of the switch and pressing on the top plate of the switch with a screwdriver I could hear the click. A tie wrap will be the perfect fix.

I did it! I saved the repair fee and did it myself. I ordered the part online, and it arrived today. I followed your steps, EXACTLY, and everything was flawless. I have never done repair work but I was willing to try because the repair cost was too high for my budget. The only problem I had was putting the body back on, but I found another video telling exactly how to do that and I did it! I feel so good that I did not have to call "the guy". Oh, when I came into the kitchen, my Dad looked at me, and laughed, saying trouble? I was able to laugh and say nope, not a bit, just cleaning up, the washer is working just fine. This was the highlight of my YEAR! Oh this is my FIRST repair project so if I can do it, anyone can. I didn't even know how to put the socket wrench together to get that one screw off, so I have learned a lot. If it hadn't been for the body not cooperating, I would have completed well within the 30 minutes you said it would take. So thank you so very much, you saved me money that I didn't have. FYI, I am a senior citizen with bad knees, so I know that anyone can do this. My Dad is 93 and has a torn ligament in his knee or he would have attempted this himself.

Very good video. Clear picture and clear instructions. Here are some additional tips for newbs like myself: 1. Screws in a washing machine might be rusted in tight. A good screwdriver with a good head will be needed. 2. The nut holding the ground wire is small and you'll almost certainly need a socket to get it off. Mine was rusted pretty tight. 3. There are two clips that hold the wire under the top on it's way to the socket. The author doesn't go into these much but be sure to give them a close look before undoing the wire. I took one clip off and found the other was pretty easy to get the wire tube out and the new one back in. 4. The front panel (not the TOP panel but the whole piece that the switch is actually attached to) was easy to get off but tricky to get back on. 5. Take pictures of everything in place before you start work. It can be hard to remember just how something fits or goes back in once you have it out.

Amen to No.4. IMO, "tricky" is a little too nice of a word to use. I had to use some other colorful words to express how truly frustrating it is to get it back on. A little sugar, honey, iced tea was definitely part of the mix.

Thank you for this video. Saved me a service call, plus I’m a fixer from birth. DIY! The plastic flap that is pushed down, came out of the switch when the front piece of the 2 piece switch body split open. My washer is built in a small laundry room. I would have had to move a dryer, then a washer. I was able to lift the front panel off enough to get to the switch. I put it back together and saw it worked. So I cleaned it up, used some crazy glue and a very tight zip tie to hold it together. Worst case it buys me some time. I did take a picture of the P/N of the switch & Washer. Thank you for great instructions. Here’s a tip for anyone else who tries this: Don’t confuse the screws for the switch with the screws for the top panel. I did, luckily I didn’t strip out the switch. The switch screws are finer with a flat head.

Very good video. Thanks. I found another video showing how the switch usually can be fixed with a zip tie and that saved me from buying a new switch. I just glued the switch together where it usually separates and stops working (didn't need the zip tie). Internet is great for sharing information. Saving money.

Thank you, I was able to repair my washer following your instructions. Sears did not have the correct instructions for this model. Following the Sears instructions led to an immediate dead end. Thanks again!

Thank you for this video! In case anyone is trying to jump their wires to finish a cycle (do at your own risk), jump the far left and far right wire on the the clear plastic connector he unplugged in the first bit of video

Thanks for this awesome how to video! Saved me a few $$! If you are unsure if the switch is the problem just make a thicker gauge u shaped cooper wire between the white and grey wire on the switch plug. This bypasses the switch on the door and the machine will run in wash and spin cycle. If you pause at 1:55 in the video you will see this up side down u shaped wire between the two wires.

Thanks, The toughest part of these fixes is just figuring out how to get the machine apart.

Thank you for this video. I followed the first half of it and just figured out the rest on my own once I disconnected the plug for the lid switch. If I had to do it over again, I would have attempted the repair without removing the front/top/side facade of the machine. If you can locate, remove, and reinstall the bolt holding the grounding wire in place, you have done the hardest part.

I got a new lid switch from a local appliance parts store ($35; AUG 2023), and it took about 30 minutes to change it. Thanks.

I can not get the washer base (the whole outer shell) back correctly. Did you need 2 people to do it?
