Display connectors like HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, and DVI can be confusing for even seasoned techies! What are the differences? Which one should I use?

@@rasheen1036 first, check what ports are on the back of your monitor. Keep a note of which ports are there. Then find a matching port on the back of your pc and reference off this video or a quick image search would do the same job. Most monitors will auto search to find which port is being used but in some old monitors there is a button to switch between ports. Only one cable needed, usually one of the 4 in this video. Hope this helped

Before I begin my actual comment, I would like to apologize in advance for my inadequate level of English proficiency. I am not a native speaker of the world's current lingua franca which unfortunately leads to me making numerous embarrassing mistakes being made whenever I attempt to communicate using this language. Whenever I am reminded of how I lack the ability to convey my thoughts in an eloquent manner, I feel as though I have committed a cardinal sin, as though every English teacher in the world is simultaneously shaking their head and sighing due to how utterly disappointed they are at me. Although I know that saying sorry to those of you who are reading my comment will not change the fact that I fail miserably to write and speak perfect English, I am writing this as a way to deter a certain type of people who cannot stand poor English (Also known informally as Grammar Nazis) from mocking me by posting unwanted and unnecessary comments detailing my every blunder. In my humble opinion, making grammatical errors should be perfectly acceptable as native speakers should not expect non-native speakers to be able to communicate in their second or third languages eloquently. If you are able to completely understand what the other person wrote, is there really a problem with what they've written? No, because the entire concept of communication is the exchange of information between other intelligent beings, which means that no matter how the exchange of information is made, as long as the information is accurately shared there is not a fundamental issue with their ability to communicate. To see it in another way, remember that someone who isn't fluent in English is fluent in another language. When you think about it this way, isn't it impressive for someone to speak a second language in any capacity? Having empathy and respect are qualities that are sorely missing for far too many people these days, especially on the internet. That being said, I am aware that not all netizens who correct others are doing it to ridicule and shame. There are some who do so with the intent to help others improve and grow. However, displaying the failures of other people publicly will cause the person who is criticized to feel negative emotions such as shame and sadness due to the fact that their mistake has been made obvious which severely undermines the point they were trying to make in spite of their unfamiliarity with the English language. In most circumstances people are not looking for language help when they post anything online. Most people just want to enjoy themselves and have a good time on the internet which is why I would not encourage correcting other people regardless of your intentions. If you really do want to help others with their spelling or grammar, I would highly recommend you to help via messaging privately because not only will you not embarrass anyone, you can also go more in-depth with your explanation which I'm sure the other person will greatly appreciate if they want help, but I digress. I know that I've written a bit of an essay, but I hope I've made my points clear. Anyways, here is the comment I wanted to make: Facts

@IRMacGuyver
@IRMacGuyver 3 жыл бұрын
I think VGA got more updates. DVI was kind of a dead end and couldn't support much more data where VGA could be upgraded all the way to WUXGA. DVI required 2 cables be connected "dual link" to a graphics card to drive a 2k monitor but "VGA" could do it with just one cable. DVI sort of lives on through HDMI though since the original HDMI was basically DVI with a new connector. But VGA cables still work fine with any HD 15 pin dsub connector.

@@skaftiTH DVI-D is too slow and has too big of a connector. Totally incompatible with today's laptops. Also the max FPS at 4K is still a huge problem at 30 hz when pro gamers expect at least 144 hz out of a display. Worst of all the color space for DVI is crap RGB instead of YCbCr 4:4:4 which produces more accurate images to the original source.

7 years later, still a great resource. But a couple things to note: VGA was analogue because it was made for CRT, and thus old graphic cards were only VGA. Most LCD screens from the 90s only have VGA input because they were made to be compatible with these VGA only cards, but using an analogue signal for a digital display makes the image blurry, so for these old monitors you need the shortest and highest quality cable possible in order to get the best image quality. Also worth keeping in mind that the even older EGA (as well as CGA and the standards before it) was digital and CRTs had digital-analogue converters in the monitor input, so those monitors are only compatible with EGA, and not anything newer. Despite being digital, EGA is not directly compatible with modern monitors and must be processed during the conversion. Can't just stick a DVI connector to the end of an EGA cable On cards with VGA and DVI, the DVI is fed directly from the GPU, while the digital-analogue converter for VGA is hooked into this datastream. This was the only way they could make cards have both digital and analogue output. With more modern digital-only cards, it's much easier to have different output options, and it's normal for cards to have DVI, DP, and HDMI ports (it varies with model whether you still get DVI), although you usually can't use them all at once. Typically some of them share channel, but really depends on your card.

Yeah it was...but his "favorite" up and coming new video standard(the Display Port) didn't really pan out and become a widely adopted standard, did it? I found this because I'm trying to find the best way to hook up 2 monitors to my 9020 optiplex. It had a VGA, 2 DP's, and what looks to be a 2nd male VGA port that is labeled "ioio". You seem to know a bit about this subject. Any suggestions? For the info...My dell monitor only accepts vga and dvi, and I'm trying to use a tv with hdmi/optical/AV-component as my second monitor.
@Lynwood_Jackson
@Lynwood_Jackson 2 жыл бұрын
@@ej2796 it's been a month, so I fairly sure you found the answer out but in case you haven't: the "ioioi" is a serial port. It was a standard for periferals prior to USB. If I were you, I would go VGA to the monitor and get a Displayport to HDMI adapter for the TV. Honestly though, you might want to consider buying a video card instead of using the integrated graphics or whatever card they might have in it.

Hey man, can i ask a question about displayports judging by your enthusiasm? :P I am thinking about getting a monitor for black Friday. I am gonna buy an HDMI input one with built in speakers. However, I have a mini display port and I was wondering if audio will output to the monitor's speakers (using a mini displayport to HDMI adapter). I know there's google, but nothing beats a conversation. thanks in advance bro.

I don't know really if the adapter will output the sound, but HDMI and mini display port can output the sound by connecting directly. Sorry my english.

I work in school tech support. We have a mixture of VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI throughout our schools. It is annoying at times. One classroom can have a new SMART IFP (fancy way of saying large touch screen) connected to the teacher's laptop via HDMI and the room next door can have a 10 year old projector on its last leg that is running on a CAT 5 to VGA extender. And the teacher's laptop has a DisplayPort to VGA adapter and a VGA cable linking that to the CAT5 to VGA extender sender unit. Its a mess. We are trying hard to standardize our classrooms to only use HDMI, but it has been proving quite difficult.
@gamecubeplayer

my trade school class not only still uses vga for the projector but the projector itself is full of lies (it can take in 1920x1080 but the digital screen is only 1024x768 so it has to downscale 1920x1080 to 1024x576 and it looks like crap)

You forgot DVI's biggest "drawback" (from the industry's perspective), and probably the real reason for its coming obsolescence: No support for DRM. This made it utterly undesirable for use in TVs. Fortunately, HDMI is here for the rescue, solving this unbearable flaw.
@megakarlachofficial
@megakarlachofficial 2 жыл бұрын
DVI itself actually support HDCP (DRM), as the port is electronically identical to HDMI, but only few monitors support it. HDCP are optional on DVI but on HDMI required it.

ImperialDoor They don't even come close. Consoles are nowhere near in comparison to a high end gpu. Also Linus proved a 6 year old gtx 480 did the same compared to the xbox one and ps4 and that is sad. Also consoles struggle at 1080p at 60fps plus they use hdmi 1.4 which only supports 60hz at 1080p. Not hating on consoles as I own an xbox one but it was a waste of $350 plus the lack of backwards compatible games. Give me a break Microsoft. I can still play games on the pc that I have owned for over 10 years but a console no lol. Currently over 300 games on the pc that I own compared to the $120 I spent on 2 xbox one games.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 only supports up to 9W of PD and has half the bandwidth of HDMI 1.4 - while Gen 2 does support up to 100W PD but still has less bandwidth than HDMI 1.4 - best advancement of display ports in recent times would definitely be Thunderbolt 3 (same connector, totally different internal wiring) that debuted in Late 2016 iirc?

No locking mechanism is definitely a plus for HDMI cables, not a drawback.. What if your cat or dog gets behind the TV and gets caught in the cable? It will pull the TV and computer off my desk causing about $2k in damages instead of just yanking the cable out worst case scenario breaking the cable which would only be $20 in damages. For this reason I NEVER screw in those locking screws on my DVI cables. Also because sometimes I have to unplug and replug it often for my Oculus Rift to work right.

DVI master race. Why would you get HDMI for gaming on a 1080p 60 hz panel? DVI also has a cable that you cannot pull out by accident where as HDMI has no lock meganism. The advantage of HDMI would be that it carries audio, but who wants to use the crappy build in speakers? Not the mention the limited color range with HDMI you need to change and wierd driver issues concering both AMD and Nvidia. My friend got black bars around his screen using HDMI and DVI just worked. DVI was build from the ground up to be a PC monitor standard and is still a very good option. Dual link can even do 1080p 144hz and no confusing version numbers!
