Great simple to understand video! One thing to note is that Dolby Vision does not use only dynamic metadata. Dolby requires that Dolby themselves measure the TV to use the technology (like a certification process) and they develop what they call a “Golden Ratio” table so that the TV can correctly represent (according to its limitations) the content as close as possible to Dolby Vision mastering displays commonly used in the cinema industry. They are involved in the whole process from start to finish. With HDR10 it is up to the manufacturers to do this conversion with some manufacturers doing it better than others where with Dolby Vision it is more consistent across multiple brands.

Fun fact for Udemy, a jarring pause between the first two sentences of your commercial and a spokesman TELLING me what I should do is a great way to make me click the 'Skip Ad' button. Interesting- HDR photography has been around for years. It is simply a camera taking multiple pictures, each with different brightness levels, and then overlaying them - one on top of the other for a greater contrast between colors and light levels
@NGC1433
@NGC1433 2 жыл бұрын
What you describe is the opposite. That is dynamic range compression - you take a huge dynamic range in the nature(requiring more than one pic at different exposures to cover it) and squeeze it into a much smaller dynamic range that a TDR - tiny dynamic range monitor can display. This is also decreasing the contrast, not increasing. Contrast is difference between darkest and brightest parts of an image and all the fuss with the multiple frames is because camera will clip either shadows or highlights. HDR in this video is actual high dynamic range, where the display will sear your eyes with highlights and retain detail in shadows simultaneously.
@ogshotglass9291

The photography HDR is different from TV media HDR. What failed to be mentioned was that in HDR10 standard, the 10 refers to the 1000-nit max peak brightness. That refers to physically how bright the screen really is, which you really can't control in printed photos (unless you intend to set it on fire lol) In 1000 nits, it's equivalent to a 292-lumen light bulb (It's not the wattage of a bulb that determines how bright it is, but the lumens). HDR standards define how bright the screen will be. Dolby Vision requires a 10,000-nit, or 2,919-lumen, peak brightness, and HDR10+ is 4,000 nits (1,168 lumens). HLG brightness is dependent on your display, as it is also backwards compatible with standard dynamic range (SDR) screens at 100 nits. Photography HDR is designed to get the most detail by taking multiple pictures within an "exposure bracket" and then combining them. The only exception to that is data that is taken in RAW format (which file type differs by camera manufacturers. A Canon Rebel T6, also known as a 1300D depending on region, uses the .CR2 file extension for its RAW format). This really actually blends both ideas, only because the camera takes the picture, skips all processing, stores that data, and notes the camera settings so it can be displayed right. It's all uncompressed. Here's an example to understand it. In editing, a photo taken accidentally in black-and-white can be easily switched to full color in as little as one click because the photo actually WAS taken in full color, and is stored that way. But the camera made a note that it is to be displayed in black-and-white instead of all its color glory. The same idea goes for white (color) balance, and if you underexposed an image. It can work with overexposure, but nowhere near as much as underexposure.

Pretty much all Vizio 4K TV's include HDR10, Dolby Vision AND HLG. The P series (and PQ and soon to arrive PQ-X) does not only all three HDR formats but also provide an extremely large number of LED backlighting zones. My 2016 P50-C1 is the same and I watch a large amount of NHL & IIHL hockey and due to the many lighting zones the black puck is actually black (rather than grey) while the ice is white (due to the white paint below the ice). If you buy a Vizio make absolutely certain you add a 4 year Squaretrade extended warranty because if it or any part of it fails after the warranty ends they'll either fix it or refund your purchase price paid for the TV. I'm about to receive a check from them for my P50-C1 because Vizio sent a repair person to my home who changed my Mainboard and power supply board and on the very first power up after his repair, my upper LED's started flickering. Squaretrade decided to send me a check rather than bother to repair it. So I'm buying either a PQ65-F1 or a P65-F1 to replace it with that check & a little bit more money added.

So my Asus PB278Q doesn't say anything about HDR in the specs, but it's a professional PLS display panel and 4K HDR stuff looks pretty good on it except some of the brightest parts have a substantial 'glow', or light overflow. That is using VLC nightly 4.0. Every other media player outputs a more colorless picture with lower brightness, and that is with madVR codec as well as others. I don't know what result is the correct result i should be seeing and how much my monitor would be lacking since it is not listed as being an HDR display to my knowledge.

I'm not sure how KZfaq will do it, but I know that in the movie business, there has to be two different color grades for each color space / standard. 1 color grade for the REC 709 color space (standard), and another grade for the REC 2020 color space, to grade for the up to the 1000 nit brightness / darkness differences.
@richellebrittain2127
@richellebrittain2127 4 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason HLG was invented was to create a backwards compatible grading system, essentially an extension to SDR, so they wouldn't have to put two separate grades into broadcast signals. Basically everything other than HLG & HDR10 is an enhancement of HDR10.
@blue4059
@blue4059 2 жыл бұрын
Kind of late... Even though HDR color container is Rec.2020, movies are mostly graded in DCI-P3 gamut before being put in the HDR container and later converted to Rec.709 SDR if needed for a web-streaming service (because internet browsers use Rec.709). Compatibility is based on service provided, for instance streaming services usually offer multiple encodings including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and SDR in case the end user's device doesn't support one or the other. For local medias like BluRay, if the consumer does not have compatible equipment, they cannot legally play the content due to lack of any fallback mechanism, unless the digital file is ripped and tone-mapped to SDR.

@DocTime56 6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have infinite contrast, but since it has the darkest blacks you can get on a TV, and each pixel produces its own light, very high contrast pictures won't have a "bleeding" effect, and the darker blacks give them some advantage, because they're able to have very high contrast, even when they don't have the brightest peak whites.

@adrianburmester1159 6 жыл бұрын
I hope this will help you: In a nutshell: contrast ratio is the ratio between on and of, HDR is the resolution in between the two. While not independend, solving one problem does not solve the other. Long answer following: Standard Dynamic Range uses 8 bit per Color. 8 bit can represent 256 values, so 0 or of is the lowest/darkest, 255 the brightest value. This means that you can represent 256 different levels of brightness. This is not bad, especially if your Picture is relatively dark overall, like it is on an traditional TV or a cinema screen. The 256 Steps are close together, so they are sufficient for an undisturbed experience. But as the TV gets brighter (~100 nits traditional, ~1000nits in current high end), these steps get larger, and might become noticeable. Therefore, we now use 10 bit (HDR10) or 1024 values per channel, making the steps sufficiently small even for very bright pictures. The contrast between perfectly off and 1000 is infinite, but so is the contrast between off and 100. The contrast is not all when it comes to quality. The point of (almost) perfect black for OLED is, that you can represent the small steps in the very dark regions. Lets say, your Standard - backlit - Display lets through a minimum of 10 nits (completely arbitrary number), even when set to the darkest black. You notice this when your phone or pc starts on a black screen, but is actually grey. Any value between 0 and 10 will look identical, losing information in deep shadows. You also want to factor in, that each pixel is made out of three colors. Perfect red would be if you turn of green and blue completely. Due to aforementioned "backlight bleeding", this is not possible on traditional displays. you therefore will always have "washed out" colors to some degree. These are the reasons for OLED, and for HDR in general.

Even though i'm not quite sure if you are serious, let me answer that. 16bit would mean 65536 grey values per color channel, that to the power of 3 equals 281.474.976.710.656 different values in RGB. Standard dynamic range is the well known 16.7 million value. So yeah, you will not ever be able to see that fine differences. Assuming your point is that we can have fixed values for each brightness, so you never have to touch display intensities again. This is not how our eyes work. we adapt to different brightness, so as soon as you exceed a certain threshold, you will adapt to the bright and loose all information in the dark. There is simply no point in cranking the bit depth that high up, as it would never be used. Even if you definetly want to stay on fixed brightness levels, the very bright values are very, very scarce, so you would carry mostly empty bits

If it says "HDR" but nothing else, it's 99.9% certain to support only HDR10. Except for HLG (which exists largely for backwards compatibility in broadcast & similar signals and is too new to be common yet), all the other formats (DV, HDR10+, etc.) are just extensions of HDR10.

I'm a total noob but at 3:00 (scene-by-scene optimization) the top sequence is supposedly better. But isn't the bottom one more realistic? When you look at the sun, it blinds you and objects in shade are darker when coming from lighter environment?

OLED and HDR is magic. 99.99% of LCD TV's can't show HDR properly (100% of the cheap ones can't).

Just wish more devices supported Dolby Vision. XBox One X/S only support HDR10. Netflix only has Dolby Vision support for a very small number of devices. Roku TV, Sony, LG OLED, and Vizio. XBox One X/S support Dolby Vision for Netflix, but not Vision on 4K discs that contain it... which is super annoying. Still... waiting on Dolby Vision for the nVidia Shield TV. It's like... the ONLY thing this device is missing.

What you really have to watch is all the tv's that say hdr that aren't Hdr! Gotta do your research and find one that hits 1000 nits peak and doesn't drop down to 300 after one second, which most of them do! I went with the Sony xbr65 900e bc it hits 800 and stays there indefinitely, no annoying dimming every other second.

Can you guys explain how to play HDR movies from my PC to my OLED TV without the movies looking dull and washed out? I'm so tired of trying to google the answer and failing. I don't know how to technology good enough. :c

I bought a 4K TV Last year, I'm still confused to whether I have to enable HDR on my TV or it's enabled by default.
@richellebrittain2127

Depends on the TV. I didn't have to enable anything on my TV (TCL 43S517 with HDR10 & Dolby Vision); my 4K Blu-ray player (Sony UBP-X700) requires you to turn on DV in the settings for DV content, otherwise it's just HDR10.
