Coffeehouse is wildly off on this. They didn't cut off his road, he had the same road access as before, and is the same access road that is there today. They didn't cut off his sewer, he never hooked into it. He was just pumping his overflowing septic tank, which was just a cement truck barrel burried into the ground, into a local stream. He could have paid 80k to build the necessary lines into the sewer system, which is what everyone else did, build a proper septic tank, or if he dropped his lawsuit against the cement plant they would pay to have his line hooked into theirs. If the actual accounts of the dealings are true then it does look like he was getting greedy thinking the larger cement company would keep biting on his higher asking prices because they had the deep money pockets and would need the extra space. I also don't get how he was cut off from his property if the trash company leased it and liked it enough to offer $400k? They must've had access to the property including reasonable plumbing and electrical power. Something doesn't make sense there which is why I'm wondering if we are getting the real or whole story. There's a book written by a local journalist (Patrick Brower) who witnessed the rampage and had covered the 10+ years of ongoing bad blood between Heemeyer and the city (Heemeyer had filed many complaints/suits against other businesses/the city for various reasons over the years leading up to the incident) which paints a much different picture and backs it up with Heemeyer's own audio recordings and writings as well as court documents etc. In it he points out that Heemeyer's property had an easement allowing access the entire time (complete with a picture of the property the day after the rampage clearly showing an access easement behind the shop.) The access "road" running through the property bought by the concrete company was not actually a road/easement. It was just a path he'd been using because the lot was empty. The only mention of an easement in the audio recordings and other evidence refered to one he needed to attach his property to the town's sewage system. It was never denied. When Heemeyer found out what the cost would be, he stopped his attempt to get one and never tried again. The author could only trace mentions of the "access easement denial" part of the story to the internet and assumed it must have been an intentional/unintentional misrepresentation of the sewage easement issue which ended up becoming part of the internet legend. The author also refutes the idea that Heemeyer never intended bodily harm to anyone by pointing out that he had guns mounted on the dozer which he did fire a few times when approached by police and that there were people (including the author) in the town's newspaper building when he started dozing it who barely made it out before their areas collapsed. He also points out that Heemeyer ended up selling the property on his own (for ~10 times it's appraised value) long before the rampage (surprising the town as there were still some decisions on the matter still pending at the time) and rather than use that money to purchase new land and build a new shop etc., he used it to build his dozer instead.

The destroyed private property was most likely insured, which means that all the customers of the that insurance company paid for the damage through higher premiums. Public property may have been similarly insured, or repairs might be paid by taxpayers. At the cost of his life, he harmed the finances a lot of innocent bystanders, and likely did nothing to the individuals he targeted.

Yeah, he was driving a hard bargain for his land, but the cost of moving and rebuilding everything would be substantial. Then for the City itself to deny access to a business? Then further fine that business with ‘nonsense’ when the city lines didn’t even come near his property. That was a buddy or in-law in power. I’d hope my death could be as poetic if I’dve been wronged that bad. Destruction with zero loss of life.

Marvin lost an auction for land that was adjoining his property. He lost not because There wasn't some big conspiracy against him, and his access was never blocked off (that seems to have been made up for effect by someone). In fact, the person that had supposedly "wronged" him even offered this idiot access to the local sewer line from their property. This would have resolved the whole thing, and he wouldn't have had ANY fines. But you want to know what Marvin did? He threw a fit like a small child because he wasn't going to "win" the argument. Then he spent more than a hundred thousand dollars on a brand new top of the line bulldozer (Komatsu D355A), and then poured many more thousands into the parts and tools necessary to turn it into a weapon. This is was a multi-millionaire narcissistic asshole that was unable to let go of his grudges; not some poor downtrodden man at the end of his rope. His business wasn't even failing, and he even had a million dollar home with an excellent view. The dude had an amazing life, but it wasn't good enough for Marvin. Even in his own ramblings left behind he states the following, "God blessed me in advance for the task that I am about to undertake. It is my duty. God has asked me to do this. It's a cross that I am going to carry and I'm carrying it in God's name." This guy was not some hero to be worshiped, you have been sold a bill of goods. You would do well to look more into the reality of this case rather than the folklore.

He agreed at first, and then demanded that they also build him a new 4k sq ft building on the new lot for him. He was never reasonable. I think it had more to do with him not being connected to the sewer line since he was dumping human waste into the local creek, which is illegal and for which he was fined. Also the negotiations for the selling of the land occurred before the zoning proposal was even presented, so Marvin going back on the deal basically threw a wrench in everything that was already agreed upon, since he was suddenly asking for more money. 2 wrongs don't make a right, and the same can be said for Marvin as well.

They didn't really cut him off though. He had sold the business months prior and the new business owners brought everything up to code immediately. He leased the property from the new business owners for months and lived in his workshop as he made killdozer and then went on his rampage. Brilliant engineer, absolute dick of a human being.

I totally agree! sure he could have made a few different choices but he felt he was being railroaded and didn't get treated fairly in his mind. he was there before the cement plant and after trying to get treated fairly they started attacking him with ridiculous fines to pressure him...would I have done that nope lol but respect to him for standing firm in what he felt was unjust and unfair treatment...and he never hurt or killed anyone it was personal and targeted...I literally cried when he killed himself....I don't see him as a hero but I respect his choice....RIP Marvin happy sledding beyond the veil ❤🇨🇦

Why the hell some concrete company gonna try to put him out of business? He wasn't even competing with them, totally different businesses... But the concrete company and city officials F'ed him over. @@southernflatland You must've missed the part where he was offered far more than the land was actually worth TWICE, agreed to sell it TWICE, and then raised the price TWICE! All he has to do is honor one of his agreements to sell the land and he would have been fine. He had every opportunity to get out of there with a huge load of cash and reneged on the deal. Town council was a corrupt good old boys club. They were out to get Marvin for buying that piece of land. The concrete company wanted the land but didn't out bid Marvin and was a sore loser. The man and his dozer are the hero's in the story.

The concrete company had enough money to put the city council in their pocket. Big business always beats government.

Watch the documentary on Netflix that goes much more into depth. The guy was crazy. That's not what happened.

While I agree that no one should be blocked access to their property, Marvin made a mistake. At first he agreed to sell his land for 250k, then 375k which the other party agreed to. Asking for 1M AFTER he said yes to 375k is not right. You either be a man of your word or say no when offered the 375k. I don't know how much land costs there but is 1M reasonable?

Can't say I know small town Colorado real estate circa 15 years ago. Just because they talk about multiple times what he paid, does not mean that it was an unwarranted sum (though I am inclined to believe it was, as you do). The house I live in is currently valued at something like 4x or so what I paid 7 or so years ago when I got it, due to the market being a buyers market at the time and getting it as a foreclosure, then seeing a rebound of the market. And it isn't like I have some super valuable place in the middle of a giant city or something where the price would naturally be sky high. Just some food for thought. As I said, I am inclined to the same opinion as you are. But since I don't have enough info....

He only targeted those that ruined his life and only damaged buildings. I do not know the value of his property, but if he felt it was worth more than a few hundred thousand dollars it probably was. The city will never buy a property for what it is actually worth, usually they will only offer a fraction. Imagine you save up money all your life for a property and are forced out of it while being offered only a fraction of what you put in. Then he came back and said that he wanted $1million. He was being a jerk. What the town ultimately did to him was wrong, but he was not some angelic simple working man being bullied by big government. He was a bully who got done in by a bigger bully.
