Fun fact about Snape's self-title, the half-blood prince, it's based on his blood status as his mum was a pureblood but his dad was a muggle, and the fact his mother's maiden name was Prince which is an old wizarding family. Hence the Half-Blood Prince. Hermione discovers the part about his mother's maiden name in the books which gives context to the name.

I just have to say Book Ginny kind of had it all. She was fun, confident (with integrity!), sassy, a powerful witch, goodhearted, a really good quidditchplayer and with looks that turned the boys' heads. That would had been more fun for Bonnie Wright to work with, than awkwardly feeding Radcliffe and attending to his shoelaces 🤦🏼‍♀️ And another thing. She shared something with Harry no one else did; she too had been posessed by old Voldy, although That's in movie two, but she brings it up again in book five.

The awkward feeding & tying his shoe reminds me of K-dramas & C-dramas, where the girlfriend or wife shows her love by being subservient like that. Not at all what you would expect a daughter of Molly Weasley to do. There's a big difference between showing your love by caring for someone & being subservient. Makes me wonder who came up with those scenes. I know they were short on time trying to get all the big plot points & small clues in, but surely there was a better way to show the budding romance with Harry.

I do really feel for Bonnie in that regard because she personality wise has a lot more in common with book Ginny and would have played her beautifully if the writing for her scenes was better. One thing that many film watchers miss is at the start of the movie when they are showing all the newspaper headlines. One article tells us that Draco's dad was sent to Azkaban prison for his part in the battle that took place at the Ministry of Magic. The tidbit they left out of the film was the fact that Draco was chosen to perform a task for Voldemort, partly as a way to punish Lucius for failing to retrieve (breaking) the prophesy orb & then being arrested. Since Lucius, as head of the family is now imprisoned, the role falls on Draco's shoulders as he is the only heir to Malfoy Manor. That is why his mom, Narcissa (Bellatrix's sister), is so scared & asked Snape for help in protecting Draco as he tries to fulfill Voldemort's secret plan.

The movies never dwelled much on Voldemort's past like the books do. For example, the first memory that Dumbledore showed Harry belonged to a Ministry employee that visited his maternal family. In that memory, we learn that the Gaunts (Voldemort's maternal side of his family) were a pure-blood family, descendants from Salazar Slytherin whose obcession for pure-blood caused them to do inbreeding to the point they suffered from an unhinged personality and had their magic weakened. Voldemort's mother was deeply bullied by her father and brother and her crush over a Muggle boy was a great deal of shame for her family. After her father and brother got arrested, she was able to enstrength her magic enough for her to bewitch Voldemort's father and force him to love her. That empty love gave birth to Voldemort, who became a loveless being as a price for his mother's actions. When she was pregnant, Voldemort's mother lifted the magic that was keeping his father in love with her, hoping he would stay with her for the baby, only to be abandoned. Voldemort's mother ended up giving birth to him on an orphanage and lived only enough to name the boy, Tom as his father and Marvolo as his grandfather.

In the book, Ginny tells Harry that she’s always been interested in him, but has been following Hermione’s advice on the matter. Hermione is the best wingwoman one can have. That's basically what she told Ginny. To be more especific, she told her to try to be Harry's friend, instead of crushing over him, and to date other boys. Not sure if this was mentioned but Dumbledore has a funeral service in the book. It’s a huge deal and so many people attend- the Minister of Magic comes along with some of his workers, the Order, Centaurs from the Forest, Merpeople from the lake, Hagrid’s brother Grawp, all the students, the teachers, Hogwart’s ghosts, and way more. The merpeople sing a song from the lake and it is so sad. He was so well known and loved and it’s so heartbreaking to read. Fawkes conjures a flame at the funeral which covers Dumbledore’s body and then the flames become a white tomb. Fawkes never comes back.

It's interesting that Snape's teaching in the 1st ever lesson of Potions is what saved Ron's life. One of his questions to Harry was where can you find a bezoar. He was bullying Harry, sure, but because of it Harry remembered the significance. Snape explains: "A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons." And good that he did, because years later Harry manages to save Ron's life thanks to it.

This isn’t entirely true. I could see this line of thinking if you’ve only seen the movies but Harry read about it in the halfblood prince book under the antidotes section. “Just stick a bezoar down their throat” Harry impresses slug horn with it during class and Ron gets mad he didn’t grab an extra one for him. Though since tho movies are technically it’s own thing I’m fine with your theory.

The brute looking guy at the start(and at the window) is Fenrir Greyback. He's the werewolf that bit Lupin when he was a child. What's the point? They hate muggles. Harry gave the twins his prize money from the Triwizard tournament. Dumbledore's age is kinda debated because two answers have been given. 116 or 150. Dumbledore was born sometime in 1881, and he was killed on the 30th June 1997, making him either 115 or 116 depending on when his birthday is. Wizards do have longer lifespans than humans. For example, the headmaster before Dumbledore, Armando Dippet lived from 1637-1992, making him 355 when he died. Although, it should be noted, he was considered old, even for a wizard.

The only thing that would have made Professor Dumbledore's death more tragic than it was is if Richard Harris was around to continue playing the character to that point. But sadly, he passed after they wrapped Chamber Of Secrets. Also, this is one of the few times where Ron was shown to actually be intelligent in the movies. The scene on the Hogwarts Express where he's explaining the Unbreakable Vow to Harry, specifically. And I've caught crap for this in the past, but I don't care: it's only explained in the deleted scene from the movie adaptation of Philosopher's Stone: A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat that can remedy most poisons.

24:31 Ron’s poison scene absolutely destroys me, I still remember reading it for the first time and feeling physically ill… Ron was basically dead, Slughorn was paralysed with fear/shock, and Harry's mind was going through 100 thoughts at once. The bezoar suddenly comes into Harry’s mind out of nowhere in this fugue state of panic and fear and confusion, and it’s total luck that there is one in the room. Even Slughorn admitted earlier in the book (perhaps not the movie) that bezoars are quite rare. As it's the Potions teacher's room, there is one stored nearby - Harry actually had just used a bezoar in Potions class earlier in the year, to try and impress Slughorn when the Half-Blood Prince's book was not helping with something, and Slughorn luckily still had the bezoar. The bezoar is actually mentioned in Snape’s first class in the first book/movie - it’s extremely advanced magic (and Snape was being a jerk by testing a first year on that knowledge).

Emma Watson was seriously considering not coming back. In the 20th Anniversary she explained that she often felt lonely on set and felt like an outsider like Hermione. She also had difficulty coping with the instant fame and attention from fans. Hero Fiennes Tiffin who plays Tom Riddle at age 11 is Ralph Fiennes' nephew. Dame Maggie Smith finished filming this movie while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Talk about badass. Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy) was originally cast as Bellatrix but had to drop out due to her pregnancy. She was subsequently cast as Bellatrix's sister and Draco's mother in this film. She died of breast cancer on April 16th 2021, aged 52. She was married to fellow actor Damian Lewis at the time of her death. Robert Knox, who played Marcus Belby (the kid from the Slug Club who ate a lot) was tragically stabbed to death when he intervened in a fight to protect his younger brother on May 24th 2008, just a few days after filming wrapped. His murderer was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 20 years before being considered for parole. Several of Dumbledore's memories of Tom Riddle were cut from the film, like the one where young Tom is shown two valuable trinkets from two of the Hogwarts founders, which would later become important to the plot. The book reveals Voldemort is the son of witch Merope Gaunt and muggle Tom Riddle. Merope fell in love with Tom and with the help of a love potion, she married him and became pregnant. J.K. Rowling has said it’s important that Voldemort was conceived as a result of force rather than real love, as it explains why he cannot feel love. Merope eventually stopped using the potion hoping Tom actually loved her, but he abandoned her and their unborn son. This explains Voldemort’s hatred of muggles, as well as half-bloods, as he himself is one. As an adult, Tom returns to Hogwarts to ask Dumbledore for a job as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, but is denied. This may be why the position is cursed and why the same teacher cannot be for more than a year. Instead the film adds a (in my opinion) pointless and out-of-nowhere scene of the Weasleys' house getting burned to the ground. The filmmakers said they wanted to add more action but trying to solve any mystery involving wizardry is just as compelling as any action scene. In the film, after Snape reveals himself as the Half Blood Prince, there is no further explanation. But in the book it is explained that Snape was half-blood and his mother's maiden name was Prince, hence where he got the name. Hermione actually figures this out. In the book there is a long fight sequence between The Order of the Phoenix members and students vs. Death Eaters. Ron's oldest brother Bill Weasley's face becomes disfigured after he is bitten by Fenrir Greyback (who bit Lupin), but thankfully it isn't a full moon so Bill doesn't become a werewolf. He and Fleur Delacour (from Beauxbatons who competed in the Triwizard Tournament) are engaged at this point. Another difference from the book is the Harry and Ginny relationship, which is honestly very poorly executed in the films. There is also NO chemistry between the actors whatsoever. Ginny's had a crush on Harry since forever but Harry has never shown any interest in her. While in the books, Harry has a huge crush on Ginny, which culminates in a passionate, surprising kiss after that year's Quidditch final, in front of everyone. They are in relationship throughout much of the book, but Harry breaks up with her for her safety. Harry gave the twins the 1000 galleons he earned from winning the Triwizard Tournament and that's how they paid for their shop. Harry also inherited Grimmauld Place and Kreacher after Sirius' death. Dumbledore's funeral was cut from the film, as well as all scenes with the Dursleys.

This is a great comment, I forgot some of it, thanks! What drives me mad more than anything in the books (and also the movies) is how JKR views, explains and uses love. The idea that Lily loved her son "enough" to save him implies - at least to me - that others didn’t love their children enough to do so. And the idea that if you have shitty parents you won’t be able to love it’s just… horrible. I’m not saying it doesn’t completely mess you up. And what happened with Voldemort’s parents is terrible and definitely paved the way for him to have issues. I just think she described it in a way that sounded like it’s inevitable that your parents terribleness would make you terrible too. And like it doesn’t matter who you’re with, where/what you learn,… maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic 🙈

Ginny is such a great character in the books and they made her as bland as wallpaper paste in the movies. There are so many more memories about Voldemort in the book they could have shown and let the cheesey romance take a back seat. Tom actually said he could do things to people who annoyed him but I guess they thought that was too grim even though we had 2 attempted murders and one murder in the same movie. Snape's witch mother's maiden name was Eileen Prince. His muggle father was Tobias Snape so he really was half Prince and a half-blood. Ron has always had problems with confidence. If you'll read/listen to the books some day, This book is Very different from the movie, and i would say the same about the fourth. The books are more to the business and less teen hormons, even if that's definitely there too. The fifth book is thick as a Bible. All my favourite bookscenes stayed out of the movie. There are more complex characters, sidestories, and it's sprinkled with loads of dry humor! Each time I reread them, the humor surprises me 😊 Much recommended. 📚📕

Some kid yelled “SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE” in the hallways at my high school right before I had gotten to that part when the book had just come out. I’m still mad about it almost 20 years later, I wanted to knock that kid out. I had read the series since it came out and I was always a year younger than the characters so I grew up with them and I was so pissed that he ruined probably the most important part of the entire series besides the defeat of Voldemort. It’s the worst part you could spoil in the entire series. What an a-hole

After the release of the sixth book, there was a big conversation amongst fans about whether Snape was good or bad. Everyone knew he was a double agent, but there was debate about where his true allegiances lie. We find out in the seventh book, and it is one of the best-told twists in literary history. Ginny had a much bigger role in the novels than she did in the movies, which is a shame because she is a really awesome character who was pretty much ignored in movies 3, 4, and 5. The character of Draco Malfoy is very well developed in Half Blood Prince, and we actually see the character arc of his loyalty to his family, his fear of Voldemort, and his desire to not have the task that he has been given as a 16 year old. Tom Felton played it perfectly, very close to the novel.

It’s funny you asked about the impact on the muggle world because the books include a whole section where the minister of magic visits the current Prime Minister to explain that Voldermort is back and how it will affect muggles. He mentions that every Prime Minister is aware of magic and meets with the minister of magic but that they never repeat it to others because it sounds too crazy.

I wish they put how dumbledore put a curse on Harry to stop him from doing anything when the death eaters where on the tower. Harry realizes dumbledore is actually dead bacause his spell is no longer affecting him. So Harry was there couldn’t move and had to watch snape kill dumbledore and couldn’t do anything but watch. That kills me.

The curse Harry uses on Draco was in the margins of the Half Blood Prince's textbook, which is why it was on Harry's mind & he used it. But it didn't describe what it did, just said "for enemies" & didn't say the counter for it. When Harry saw that he could've killed Draco with dark magic if Snape didn't know what to do, he realised his ignorance & how dangerous that can be.

I really hope that you react to the Ryan George Pitch Meetings after the series, especially the one for this film. While I think that the score and the color toning captured the mood of the book perfectly, they really could have done better with the content. Not only did the writers massacre Ginny's character, but they completely missed the point of all the romances, which paid off massively in the book. Also, they cut so much of the "background" out, the constant news of disappearances and attacks that really made it clear that Hogwarts was holding on by its fingernails as an oasis in an increasingly dangerous and unstable world. Lovely reaction, though. I still enjoy this film, and I'm glad that you did as well.

Love the way you look at the relationship between Harry and Ginny in this movie, cuz clearly that’s the direction the movies alluded to since the second movie, but definitely they could added more scenes in each movie to kinda build that up like how they did with Ron and Hermione. Cuz Harry has never showed much interest towards Ginny until this movie, unlike Ginny who’s been interested for awhile now. But all in all, it’s not the worst depiction of teen romance. The awkwardness is pretty realistic

One of the things I don't like in this movie WAS that the mishandling of the Harry/Ginny relationship. In the books, it had been building for a while. Also, it was Harry who kissed Ginny, not the other way around. Basically, Harry had been given detention and was unable to play in the quiddich match. He was so anxious about whether or not the team won. But then when he came into the common room and saw that Ginny had lead the team to victory, he was overcome and just kissed her right there in front of everyone. In the movie, they made it so that Lavender kissed Ron. Another cool thing about that scene in the book is that, after kissing Ginny, Harry looked over at Ron and Ron just shrugged like (yeah, I saw this coming).

You are my FAVORITE reactor so far (and I've seen sooo very many!). Your Philosophers Stone intro (where you mentioned magic stuff was discouraged to some degree or banned when you were younger) is what made me feel that you'd be fresh and authentic. Some reactors fall a bit more on the emotionally invested side while others lean a bit more into the action (production value? The flashes and booms?). I'm into what the characters are feeling/thinking (or *may* be f/t). Backstories, motivations (justified or not), inner turmoil, dedication -- all of it. And really, we've experienced our own equivalents throughout our human lives. The viewer/reader CAN relate in some way(s) and, in so doing, can connect to the characters/situations -- IF they allow themselves to do so (anyone who doesn't is a puzzle to me..).

The reason a lot of things felt like they came out of nowhere is because of how much they condensed the material from the books. The books got longer as the series went on but the movies stayed the same length (excluding the last one). It sometimes gives me mental whiplash to watch the movies because my brain is expecting all the events of the books lol. If you enjoy the HP world then I highly recommend reading the books (or listening on audio book). For the first 2 movies, they only cut a few scenes and extra characters. But with the later movies, they removed whole subplots and whatever they did include, they expedited quite a bit. I'm not saying the movies aren't worth watching but there is a lot more content in the books.

Snape was friends with Mulciber and Avery who were Death Eater aspirants. It’s likely they took advantage of their propinquity with Snape to learn a few of the spells he made. That or, during the “duels” with James and Sirius, Snape used the spell and James copied it. Hence why Snape wrote “For Enemies.”

This is my favorite book and movie and as an avid fan i understand they missed lots of the details abd storylines but it is my favorite movie just based on the acting!! Tom Felton(draco), Alan Rickman(snape) and Richard Harris(Dumbledore)play thier roles so impecably well in this movie! I applaud them every single watch! Scenes i love for their acting, not only with words but facial expressions 1)Dumbledore drinking the potion, wimpering and the "kill me!" You feel everything he is feeling! Impeciable acting, my favorite scene in the whole entire series!! 2) Draco in the bathroom before he and harry starting fighting. You can feel all the stress abd pressure he is going through just by his faces 3) then again on the tower when draco disarms Dumbledore you feel that stress and personal turmoil as well Lastly when snape does the killing curse HIS FACE😱 im in awe every single time! You feel his pain, almost like you can read his thoughts, he is so PAINED to have done it Such amazing acting all around 👏❤

In Harry's very first potions lesson in The Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone Snape asked Harry where he would find a bezoar. Even though Dumbledore died, remember his words, "Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it."
