In this fact-packed video, we unravel the fascinating life of William Hopper, a man who made an unforgettable impact on classic Hollywood. Starting with his early days under the stage name Wolfe Hopper, pushed into acting by his famous mother, Hedda Hopper, we explore his initial foray into summer stock and the New York stage. A contractual stint with Paramount between 1935-37 and lead roles at Warner Brothers paint the picture of a rising star.
Hopper's career saw unexpected turns, from his lack of ambition that returned him to bit parts to a stressful wartime military service that led to a drinking problem. After being demobilized, his nine years as a car salesman might have seemed a fall from grace, but his 1954 resurgence brought him back to fame.
A deeper dive into Hopper's personal life reveals his relationship with his mother, his unexpected early encounters with acting, and his role as a Navy frogman during World War II. His remarkable turnaround in the acting profession, culminating in his iconic role as Paul Drake in "Perry Mason," showcases his resilience.
We'll also look at his intriguing connection with Humphrey Bogart through nine films and his brief but memorable appearance in well-known classics. Hopper's life was filled with ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies, but it was always compelling.
Uncover how Hollywood reacted to his untimely death, delve into his legacy, and hear from those he inspired within the industry. Quotes from fellow stars illuminate his impact, not only on the silver screen but on the lives of those who knew him.
William Hopper's story is one of talent, turmoil, and transformation. Join us as we uncover the life of a man whose journey through Hollywood was as multifaceted as it was unforgettable. His influence continues to resonate, a testament to his unique character and enduring contribution to the world of entertainment.

He was an iconic figure in Perry Mason . The king of cool . His private detective part was perfect. From his hip attire, cool cars and an eye for the beautiful ladies. He was made for the style of the late 50’s and early 60’s. Never gets old watching him.

Love the Thunderbirds, and he always had the latest model so he drove several. Of course Perry always drove a Lincoln. Clearly Ford Motor Company must have had a hand in producing that series or paid for product placement. I have a 1960 Thunderbird and had a 1961 at one point, great cars in my extremely biased opinion.

In comparison to many Hollywood celebrities of today, William Hopper was a great one! He was not only talented, handsome and patriotic enough to serve in the Navy during World War II even though he was from a wealthy family, but he was amazingly HUMBLE too. Modern entertainers could learn some lessons from past actors like William Hopper! Thanks for telling us his story. 👍👍👍

I still watch Perry Mason every night. Hopper added extra class with the other principle cast members! Paul Drake had that little knock on Perry's side door, announcing him before coming in. Perry, Della, and Paul always seemed to share little private jokes between the three of them, always with a twinkle in their eyes. ❤

This was fascinating, I knew nothing about William Hopper other than he was the son of a famous woman. Respect for his service during WWII! He was one of my favorites in "Perry Mason", in part because he always drove the latest Thunderbird 😻. I bought my first classic T-Bird while in the Navy around 1990 in part after seeing Paul Drake driving them. The chemistry between Hopper, Burr, and Hale is what makes the old "Perry Mason" series so enjoyable.

About 6 months ago I read an article about him that had all these same facts in it, it's probably where the creator's of this video got their information from, they even used the same photo of the tattooed UDT guy that's not him in the article I'd read so I'd lay odds they simply ripped that article for their video, I've found a lot of these high volume video creator's doing the same thing, not long ago Dark Skies did a video on an American unit of the USAAF that at the end of the war was task with gathering up as much as much Luftwaffe tech as it could, curious about them I Googled the unit and found an article on them from the US Air Force's historical department and the video I'd just watched that was less than 2 hours old was taken word for word from the Air Force's article that'd been posted online 3 years before. The content creator's for these high volume video channels apparently surf around the internet looking for things they know would interest their subscriber base and use them to create their video's.

Perfect as Paul Drake, he came across as a genuine person with integrity and high standards. He was always a gentleman, similar to how he may have been in 'real life." A pleasure to watch an actor, yes, he really shone as a member of an extraordinary team which presented a brilliant crime and mystery series, certainly unequalled at that time and completely unequalled to the drivel and slime offered by writers and actors alike in 2023. The camera work was also phenomenal - creative ,thoughtful AND actually an important art of the successful series. I'm honoured to have grown up with this quality of TV. Not only has intellect and education been reduced to a very watery lemonade, worthy of being spit out after the first taste, but it truly seems current youth, their parents and their offspring are DE-evolving, alive only as competition to an ant's intellect. Could this be someone's or some group's intentional plan?Is the world becoming TOO physically crowded? Why are we accepting such low standards in entertainment or even education???!?!?!?!?!

The complete facts about his military service are very impressive. UDT ops were very high risk, both from the enemy and the sea itself. They were what later morphed into the Navy Seals. His formerly deep blonde hair turned white during the war, a result of the stress and trauma of the dangers he routinely faced. (It was long disputed whether stress could turn someone's hair white, but recent research has conclusively verified that it can happen.)

William Hopper's character on Perry Mason seemed to complete the show to me. He was needed not only to be an investigator, but for comic relief also. He was incredibly attractive. This was a man that definitely got more handsome as he got older! May he forever rest in peace.

As Paul Drake, William Hopper brought to life the concept of suave and debonair. He provided a role model for adults to achieve and youth to aspire to. By the 70's culture had radically changed and such embodiments vanished.

During the time Perry Mason was originally aired, my late father controlled our one TV, it was usually tuned to "horse operas". Fast forward 50 years and I along with my friend from Jersey, UK watch Perry Mason every morning. We wait for the coda, we call it "Flummoxed Paul", where Perry or Della explain a particular case point to Paul. His mannerisms and facial expressions speak volumes. Thanks. Narragansett Bay
