Famous last words -"This job is going to be easy!" - We join Ross from RS Electrix on-site to install a new EV Charger from BG Sync EV. The BG Sync EV charger is packed with installer-friendly features, including full inbuilt RCD, PEN fault protection and wired and wireless connectivity options. We are installing the tethered version, which comes with a generous 7.5 meters of cable and a type 2 connector.

Nice to see that finally a manufacturer designs in decent waterproofing (and dust/insect proofing) provision for silicone sealant. I have been using a ring of silicone around outdoor box screw holes for at least 25 years, it is SO obvious! AND it's simply not necessary to load up the back with half a pound of silicone as I've seen some sparkies do, yet miss parts of the hole surround thereby creating a massive FAIL!

Nice little unit that.. Not to bad price wise at about £500 ish for the tethered unit.. Not a massive fan of BG consumer units as they are always the cheapest at screwfix and often mean its been installed badly but I do use the BG outdoor sockets and have used the small garage consumer units and they are ok, I guess its not so much the product that is the issue, more the people that buy it and install it but that charger looks the business..

I’m looking at installing one of these chargers, I have no concerns of the property overloading the main fuse whilst the car is plugged into the charger but is it recommended to fit the CT clamp for good practice? Or is it not necessary

Just a cautionary point that may have been made many times before: never open circuit the secondary side of a CT while there is current flowing in the primary.

It’s never made before - what’s the issue
@johnlloyd3377
@johnlloyd3377 Жыл бұрын
@@efixx The short version: If the secondary of a CT is open circuited no current will flow in the secondary winding so no secondary magnetic flux is established in the core to oppose the main flux created by the primary winding. The flux in the the core will therefore be higher than under the designed conditions and will generate a higher secondary peak voltage which can pose a shock hazard and may cause the insulation to breakdown. This open circuit voltage is a peak voltage so an RMS voltmeter will not register it.
@TheAviation101

@@johnlloyd3377 thankfully these CT coils usually have built in TVS diodes which will clamp the voltage but it shouldn't be relied on.

I'm not sure if i'm missing something obvious, but did you just install a plastic consumer unit inside a dwelling? Not a professional, but I seem to recall something about the 17th edition amendment 3 requirement for these to be metal (or metal enclosed) and the BG site shows the interior models to be metal. Just wondering how this installation would pass an inspection.

Personally, I'm not a fan of combining data cables in with power. Possibly this dates back to my telecoms days when you don't even share ducts between power and cable lines, let alone within the same cable. However, I can see how it does make it a bit neater, but it's not something I'd like in my property. When I have to dig up the garden for ducting a cable to the detached garage it will be with separate power and data cables. I am also of the mind that if I go to this effort, then using 5 core 6mm^2 SWA would maximise flexibility for the future as it would allow for 3 phase in the future. Also, to minimise resistive losses I think it would be within regulations (as the cores are the same cross-sectional area) to parallel up two of those cores for line and another two cores for neutral when running as single phase. The CPC need only be single core when there's a 32A breaker. It's about 20 metres in total, but I still calculate that would save about 60 watts on a 7.2 kW load. Less than 1%, but every little counts.

I do hope the current transformer burden was fitted AT the transformer not the other end. An unburdened current transformer can be quite dangerous if care is not taken as it can easily produce very high voltage, safe as houses when burdened. No mention was made of this burden so I guess if as part of an overall kit it comes prefitted to the transformer. 🤔🤔

When Ross drills a hole through the outside brick wall for the charger cable to go through it looks like he goes straight in. Isn’t it better to drill slightly up at an angle to prevent rainwater getting through? I know it’ll be silicone sealed, but just for extra caution.

Still not demonstrating a proper drip loop on that great thick cable piercing both skins :-( And he was using proper sturdy clips, so really no excuse whatsoever. A "little bit of silicone" is not adequate to prevent moisture tracking into a horizonal hole like that over an extended time -- the intended lifetime of that equipment -- especially in Yorkshire! ("Prevailing weather is to the opposite wall" says Efixx; "Insurance companies and building inspectors don't care about 'the most common' wind direction " says I.)
