After a horrible car accident he had numerous operations to restore his face, and he became even more addicted to alcohol and tablets. Despite- or perhaps because of- his troubled persona, Clift won the admiration of almost all his female costars. From Elisabeth Taylor to Jennifer Jones they fell in Love with him, Katharine Hepburn is said to have spit in the face of director Joseph L. Manciewicz because she thought he ill- treated Monty and Marilyn Monroe, his costar in THE MISFITS, was his troubled soul sister. Their scenes together are poignant and somehow painful to watch.
