One of the most talented actors of his generation, Montgomery Clift was also one of the most troubled. Dependent on alcohol and drugs, he also had to hide the fact that he was gay from the movie going public. After a horrible car accident he had numerous operations to restore his face, and he became even more addicted to alcohol and tablets. Despite- or perhaps because of- his troubled persona, Clift won the admiration of almost all his female costars. From Elisabeth Taylor to Jennifer Jones they fell in Love with him, Katharine Hepburn is said to have spit in the face of director Joseph L. Manciewicz because she thought he ill- treated Monty and Marilyn Monroe, his costar in THE MISFITS, was his troubled soul sister. Their scenes together are poignant and somehow painful to watch. Apart from stills shot during the making of that film, the photographs in this tribute come from the years preceding the accident, from a time when Montgomery Clift was not only a wonderful actor, but also more beautiful than any man should be allowed to.

He out-Brando'd Brando, out-Dean'd Dean and laid the carpet for Paul Newman to walk upon. The word deserved at least one beautiful person like Monty. The only one he didn't out-do was the Monty Clift he'd have been but for fate.

Это был самый тонкий, самый волнующий талант, который навсегда изменил облик американского кинематографа...к тому же он был божественно красив...таких больше нет, не было и не будет.. - несравненный Монтгомери Клифт ...

He was a later answer to what could have bin a new Valentino, not as a compensate, but simply the gifts in total, connected to his personality. Women adored him, and he had the passion for them to, but he was troubled in his mind and his soul was broken at all four edges. He did not act, he was himself all the way just like Rudy, there was nothing to learn, it was all there. He was another type, but just as beautiful, because his eyes could have talked in a silence movie, and one would still understand every single 'word'. There will never be another Rudy, and there will never be another Monty, so you se so much alike......R.I.P. Darling Monty.....

@001Broadway : Monty was a frontrunner, he knew what cinema needed and was a rare soul, his own worst enemy, I love him for all his faults, he was real and enabled identification with everyone who's fucked-up = everyone!

"more beautiful than any man should be allowed to"!?!? Sorry, but beautiful men are a joy to look at, and in the cinema industry there have been so many: Stephen Boyd, Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner... As a rule men are nicer looking than women, though the average person may believe otherwise. All the men I have quoted were very handsome and very masculine in their looks, regardless of their erotic preferences.
