Headliner in a boat. Headlineing

I came up with the idea of headlining my boat in pine cladding, it works very well,and I reckon it only cost around £100 to do the whole boat,and you don't have to take the old heading down! I'm not a skilled carpenter,and a skilled guy could do a lot better job,but it works for me, and I'm very happy with it!

Interesting video - particularly the idea of leaving the wood unfinished. I would have expected the cladding to have warped but it doesn't look as though that has happened.

It looks very nice. I'm likely going to use the same material in my v berth but with relective aluminum insulation behind it. I have been wondering about painting vs leaving raw wood. Based on your experience, I think I will not paint it, as I imagine it could be prone to condensation like the varnish.

Yes I would not advise painting it, I did my v berth a couple of years ago, tricky job but so worth it, I just left it bare wood and it still looks perfect. Good luck 👍

Hey Jeff ,I'm Jorman, months ago I decided to make the same in my boat as well and I also think It's a good material so I made It in my fwd cabin and now I'm up to do it in my aft cabin but I'm just wondering what would you use to seal, stain and varnish all the surface cuz you know that should be done some how, so "?????" if you could give me a hand please just let me know what would you use to seal, stain and varnish

Hi Jeff, well done! I've got a Westerly Berwick from 1979... and its got the "Westerly Droop". Like you say you tend to lie in your berth thinking what can I do? My ceiling, or should that be deck head, is foam vinyl on removable boards. Westerly stared to do this in the late 70s when they realised the problems with drooping foam. Sooo... I should be able to take the panels out and re line them. The problem is the sides. A previous owner literally slashed them and re stuck them... sort of. It ;looks a right old mess. I saw the rope around the port holes but how did you do the main windows.? Did you take them out? How did you fit that flexible plastic? Was it also from B and Q and do you get problems with condensation on the windows damaging the wood? Youv'e done a great job ... one I must do now I've replaced the fore stay, sorted out the 35 year old Volvo Penta (I hope).. etc...etc... Regards John

Hi John,thank for your positive reply. I did not take out the windows,once you start putting it up it seems to hold its self with just a couple of screws (as shown in the video) and the battens. The plastic strip dose come from BnQ £1 per window! it bends very easily and holds its self in position,plus a bit of evostick. So far Ive had no problems with condensation on the wood but I put up double glazing in winter. Good luck!Regards Jeff

I see you've also got a storm lantern, are they not as good for heating as your Aladdin lamp?

Yes there's that,but the Aladdin has a round wick so more flame and more fuel used.

Hi Jeff, hope you don't mind but I've added a link to your film clip on the Westerly Owners Forum... "Hi, This is one of the "to do " jobs on my 1979 westerly Berwick. A chap called Jeff Hall has a solution that he has posted on KZfaq. He lives on a 32 foot Mac Wester which he has partly lined with cladding from B and Q. Interestingly he says he left the old lining up and put the wood over it.
