This is the easy part of the job. If you have never done a headliner removal before, allow like two days for removal and prep on MK5/6, you need to take your time. The fucking front is a beast! I finally got mine out today prepped and doing this part tomorrow. Can't wait to get it back in, the Alcantara I bought is going to look beautiful! Also wrapping the pillars but probably only the A pillars this time and return to the B and C. Need to figure out how to work the B pillars and its a 2 door so the C pillars need the panels removed where the doors would be and those have to come out for a stereo install and do them then.

This is no joke, I've been working on mine for three days, and the new fabric's not even on it yet. Get ready to have your car out of commission or be ready to drive it some quite deconstructed. The sunroof and the front by the windshield gave me a lot of trouble, vacuuming up all that rotten foam dust everywhere, and I'm sure the c-pillar is going to be a pain on my GTI during the re-install.

Anthony Hector a lot of mk5 have a front folding passenger seat. That seems to help a lot as well. The other easy option is to remove the passenger seat.

Amazon or Ebay, or directly from an upholstery shop, they usually sell it by the yard.

Headliner material is normally 60” wide and you will need 2-3 yards. If you have a sunroof buy 3 yards

As long as the fabric is thick enough not allow the glue to seep though and it stretches at least in one direction you should be fine.

I purchased mine on Amazon. I thought my interior on my GTI was black, but now that I looked more closely, it's "charcoal". Black would have been too dark. Headliner Magic and Headliner Doctor both carry it. I'm using 3M too, it says to apply it between 30 seconds to 15 minutes while it is "aggressively tacky", I'm guessing humidity and temperature affect it too. The most important part at getting it to stick is removing all of the old foam and glue residue.

You can find a local distributor in just about any town. GTI and GLI use a color Called ebony. There is three shades of black. Though it looks a dark charcoal it’s really not.

mundeyn I usually just take a clean rag and wipe off as much of the adhesive as possible. But it will always be sticky

After you've dry brushed as much of the foam off as you can, I used a couple of tablespoons of Tide in about a pint of warm water and a nylon scrub brush. Then rinsed the soap off with the garden hose. It's drying in the sun today on my patio table, it'll be 92°F today, so it should dry thoroughly in the sun. I removed the wiring harness for the cabin lights btw, it's just taped on. New glue won't stick to old glue and foam, I learned that from the mistake I made with my Beetle.

Score a line in the foam down the the material and peel it off

I scrubbed mine off with some diluted Tide, a nylon dish brush, then rinsed. I used a cleaning toothbrush for the parts around the sunroof. Let it dry in the sun. It's not good to get it wet repeatedly, but I'm sure never doing this project again on this car. Tide strangely works better than Dawn. No more tacky residue.

@@jessicah3450 thanks for the advice! Yeah I didn't want to get it wet, nor sand until the material begins to loosen up. To me a solid surface to adhere to is just that, another solid surface. Amazon pushed back my order so I have time to test it out before trying it. No foam just residual solid glue.

Hey josh. So yes there will be glue left over. As long as all the foam is off the headliner you are good to go

Not recommended on large areas. You can buy aerosol contact adhesive that works pretty well.
