How To Repair A TV That Won't Turn On | How To Replace A TV Power Supply Board | Sony KDL 40W5710

How To Repair A Dead TV | Dead Power Supply Board Replacement
In this KZfaq video tutorial I will show u how to diagnose and repair a dead tv based on these specific symptoms for any TV.
This is the 40 inch LCD TV Sony Model KDL 40W5710
Warning: This type of repair does come with risk of electrocution and damage to your device or other related electronics. Therefore consult a professional if in doubt, or do at your own risk.
There is no power when turned on, no led lights whatsoever, no backlight (back light).
Please note for this type of repair, ie no power and no led lights, until you actually replace the faulty power supply there is no telling what else could be wrong with the TV. Once you repair the power supply then you can investigate further depending on the numerous other symptoms that may appear.

this is why my tv/audio stuff is on a line conditioner. if lightning strikes, it will blow the fuse in the line conditioner and save my equipment.

My 87 yr old Moms 2011 Panasonic 42" TV would shut off after a few hours of use. A red led light would slowly flash. The remote would not turn the TV back on?! I figured out that if I removed the TV's power cord from the wall, and plugged it back in, the TV would RESET. In the old days of computers, we would call that a "Hard Boot"! She would sit for hours staring at a black screen. Thank you for putting this simple step by step video together. We cant afford another TV, so THANK YOU for helping me! Michael Seattle WA USA!

10:45..."if you want to ask a question..." but questions posted months ago go unanswered. I enjoyed this tutorial. I'd have replaced that huge black capacitor before the whole board, however, as modern capacitors are poorly manufactured junk components and are likely the power failure cause....and cheap!

My xbr9 is getting 15Vac 6Vdc to the 2 boards that attach to the screen (are these the backlight boards)? The boards are labeled 12V. Can you recommend component testing on the power board to fix this? If not, does this indicate that the main board is bad? And is it worth replacing, if it's supposed to supply 12Vdc with no AC is it possible that both of these boards are now blown as well?

Thank you, now I have to go test my DC voltage. My TV is a 110v US model KDL-40V5100 manufactured in May 2009. It doesn't have the fuse in the plug like that Euro model. There was a near lightning strike that took it out. I tried to check the fuse that is on the power supply board and it ohms out at 0 ohms but I'm not sure if it is correct since It's not removable without desoldering it. I checked the voltage to see if it comes through it and it does have 110 (117actual) volts on both sides. The 3.3vdc is present all the time it's plugged in. One Question I have is about my standby/power LED at the bottom of the front panel. It will come on if I unplug and plug the power cord back in but still a black screen. When it is plugged in I hear a relay clicking like it would do when I powered it on before the lightning. Only, it's is a double click and the the standby/power LED comes on for 12 sec. then goes off for 4 sec. and then it cycles again repeatedly. Does that mean I need to do anything different or test anything else than what you were explaining and testing for?

Its such a shame that such a huge board cant just be fixed. I guarantee its probably a blown capacitor or something simple. That circuit board is so huge and DOESNT use SMD components. It SHOULD be cake to fix :(

Hi, very detailed video , nicely explained .highly appreciate it!! I had a question on my TV- I've a sony XBR65X850E which is not turning on , no power on the screen (black) when I plug in it makes a squeaky noice from inside. I tried to reset couple of times from power but no help , is it a faulty power board problem or something else?

HI thanks for the great info . We have a Sony XBR 85X 850D which was working fine in the morning but when we came back from work was dead and no power or light will come on . We were able to take off the back cover . Noticed there are 4 boards in the back . Tested the 1st board using the multi meter and verified the 110 AC coming in and out . But the 2nd board which we think is the 2ndry power board had 110 Volt coming in but we couldnt verify voltage going out . Now we couldnt test the 3rd( some kind of green tuner board) and 4th board (main board ) . We are in the process of ordering the 2nd power supply board but would like to know how to test the 3rd and 4th board . Any insight in this will be helpful . Donot wanna junk the TV as its just 4 years old and was working fine before went to mars

Hi, I've got a Sony Bravia KDL-40EX503 that turned off on it's own, but the red standby light flashes twice. Could this be power supply issue? I've tried soft reset and factory reset, still get the same result. Any ideas please?

would each tv model have the same reference number? for instance if anyone had the tv your referenced in the video will they be looking up the same power source board that you referenced in the power board in the video?

We replaced the power supply board with a brand new one. Tested it with a voltage tester on DC and should show 5 amps and it doesn't. The old one did the same. Do you know what the problem might be from here? There is power going in from the plug but not power going out to the mother board. Like I said the old one did the same so I am guessing it must be something else. Any suggestions?

My TV won't turn on. On the power supply board there's a connector with two pins labeled 5V and two labeled 12V. When I connect the AC power cord, I get 5.1 VDC on the 5V pins, but 0 VDC on the 12V pins. I bought a replacement board from a repair shop but it did not fix my problem and I get the same readings on these pins. Do you think both these voltages should be present when AC power is applied? Does this means both boards are defective?

But what's the fun in that? Search the faulty Capacitor, Triac, Transistor or Diode and replace that. It's just like art; it takes some time but the end result is so rewarding.

Good morning. Our TV went out last week a Sony 85XBR X950G I tested the board and though we had incoming power there was no standby voltage on the pin. I thought I had found the issue and ordered a new board that showed up today. Everything checks out but the standby pin still has no 3.3VDC on the new board. Any idea what you would check next? Now it has me wondering if my power supply board was the issue in the first place. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, my sony bravia DKL-55W800B was working one day and the next nothing. No light on the screen, no light on the bottom of the tv. I checked the transformer with a voltmeter and that is fine. Next i changed the LED driver and that wasn't the issue. So I changed the Main Board and nothing. What do you think is the problem. Thank you

I have a Sony KVL-26BX300 tv...When I m switching it on then its standby green color light is glowing continuosly but the screen is totally black....I checked the power supply board and it is supplying correct voltage to the logic board...can you tell me what could be the problem and how to resolve it?? My Phillips TV is not turning on. It stopped working when it was 1 1/2 years old it is still not 2yrs old. I don’t have anything to check the power on the board so I just bought the power board. However, I just changed the power board ,the TV still doesn’t turn on. What else could be the issue ?

If you dont have standby voltage, its not necessary that the power board is defective, problem could be also elsewhere as everything is connected.

I was reading some forums and few people said that they replaces power boards, but still no standby voltage... then one expert replied that these boards are all connected and the problem could be anywhere. If there are no service schematics for it, its very difficult to repair.

The video ignores the fact that the capacitors on the board could remain fully charged, even with the mains power disconnected. Some people are in for a shock.

@@jeffw825 Now...I'm not saying this is the safest or most efficient way to discharge a capacitor, by any means. But that said, most people I've met who regularly work with common electrical equipment will simply take an insulated screwdriver or something and very quickly connect 2 of the posts with the metal on the tool to discharge any electricity stored in the capacitor. Do this at your own risk, it is definitely not the safest way to discharge a capacitor.
