Health Anxiety - Learning from false alarms. If your anxiety causes you frequent visits to hospital or the doctors, a tool used in CBT called worry records could help reduce these unnecessary visits and reduce your health anxiety.

The bad thing is that once you get to a certain age, doctors keep telling you the you might have this and might have that. And even prescribe preventative medications... just in case... they scare you even if you feel good.

I have Sjogrens and my general health is a roller coaster so much that the slightest irregularity makes one feel that there is a major medical problem. Your Worry Record is such a valuable take-away from this video. I learned from my frequent hospital visits that running to them were not the solution to my ever-unpredictable anxiety (also a Sjogrens symptom). But I had nothing but general notes and memories to reflect on when the feeling that a hospital emergency room would be the best answer to what I was experiencing. In time I assessed each new situation which developed and learned not to jump to dial 911, but I still felt that nagging anxiety tug. I look forward to using my Worry Record- I created one using the notes you provided in this video- should I be visited by this situation again. Thanks so much for this and all of your other videos- especially the Blood Pressure ones. I needed a way to see beyond that nightmare.

I’ve always had anxiety but I developed panic attacks about dying and physical symptoms from my anxiety after working as EMT during the pandemic. I know all the signs of decompensating shock, and my anxiety mimics all of them. I get a high heart relate, low blood pressure, cold clammy skin, rapid respirations… it’s so hard to convince myself I’m not gonna die alone and terrified. That it will pass.

I also work in health care, after my father almost died of covid my health anxiety got worse. Some days are bad, feels like I'm gonna die on my sleep or something. It's suffocating. Even though i know it's just anxiety it didn't make me feel better. It's hard to convince myself but i still keep telling my self that this will pass.

My hypochondria is currently raging. Yes, I've had much progress over the years, eg, I used to Google, go to doctors, test...now rarely. Now I'm afraid to go to doctors or get tests. This too is hypo. When triggered, belief in imminent peril seems irresistible. The things that have worked for me are regular vigorous exercise and continually challenging the fear. Because it's all about the fear!
@TheAnxietyAttic
@TheAnxietyAttic Жыл бұрын
Yes its good to challenge the fear and also to do the opposite of what your anxiety is telling you. Doing the opposite disproves the belief driving the anxiety.

I have frequent health anxiety around transient abdominal pains. I often think the worst, and sometimes have recurring pains after lifting things, so I tell myself it’s probably a muscle. I frequently google symptoms and come up with all kinds of things: colon or stomach cancer, kidney failure, pancreatic cancer, etc. Most of those diseases start with abdominal pains or back pains right? I will ride a wave of fear for a few days and then the pain will go away for a week or more. Sometimes the pain comes in a different area, so I focus on that. It’s an exhausting and draining cycle of fear, “being good”, freedom and then fear again.

@@TheAnxietyAttic Martin I just watched it. I have been avoiding airplanes for 7 years now but I just got a job in New York and I have to fly from California to get there. Is getting a one time prescription of a benzodiazapene a safety behavior that could make me have a panic attack on an airplane? I just don't want to have a panic attack while I'm trapped in the air.
@TheAnxietyAttic
@TheAnxietyAttic 4 ай бұрын
@connorgrant8604 Its a trade off. Benzos are a safety behaviour so in the long term make anxiety worse but in the short term it will likely calm you down for your flight. If it works it can be very tempting to take benzos for any situation where you fear panic attacks but they are very addictive with some bad side effects if used regularly. If you do decide to use it because the flight is so difficult, once it is over try to work your way up your graded exposure list over the next year without benzos so that if you have to do a flight a year from now it will not be so daunting and will not require the Benzo.

About the brain practice, its absolutely true! Whille knowing i have anxiety my logic said - "Well, this is reality its nothing but Anxiety, if i would ever die from it i would have done so already but i wont, and im completely fine, also,.. i am challenging you, go on, bring me that heart attack, whats wrong? where you hiding? come on Anxiety im waiting to give me that panic attack i want so bad again!" (This confuses Anxiety and completely the oposite happens) Iv done that as many times as i felt that a panic attack would strike me and surprisingly it goes away and since then iv never had any of it. 😁👍 Please, we just have to be mentaly strong as anxiety effects our nervous system as well, Anxiety is only a "pathophysiological" symptom with a phsycogenic origin. Wich means, the more you think of yourself of being sick, the more you will feel sick from it and it will lock you down making it hard to go away. The less you think of being sick the more it goes away, think positively and be happy not worried or neither sceptical. 🙂

Can you do a video on health anxiety when there is something wrong with you? For instance. I have cardiophobia… but I also really do have PVC’s SVT Lupus and Graves… my blood tests are always a little funky. Sometimes I think that my health anxiety is hardest to get over because I do have things wrong with me they’re just not as bad as what my anxiety is making them out to be. If that makes sense?

This is a good idea. I have something similar - every time something unexpectedly good happens in the world... something that I was sure wouldn't happen... I write it down. Such as when Elizabeth Smart was found alive. And I review this when I am sure the very worst is going to happen to me... this is a good idea but 30 years of HA and I have forgotten all the times I have been to the doctor and it has been nothing. But I do remember the one time I went to the doctor, pushed and she found a condition.

but anxiety cycle not necessarily starts from the thought. For me, it starts from the symptom - for example dizziness, when I suddenly stand up, then I think that I have a brain bleeding and am dying now, then I get scared and my body follow along with heart palpitation and shallow breathing, where I start feeling even more dizzy and even more convinced that I die. And then I am in full panic attack :( how to stop being afraid of the symptoms? especially when you have been checked and you have experienced symptoms many times without dying? why the brain does not learn that symptom is not dangerous?
@TheAnxietyAttic
@TheAnxietyAttic 5 ай бұрын
In the diagram the cycle is shown as starting with the thought but in reality it can also start with a symptom or a feeling. For people who suffer anxiety, the cycle is constantly going around and around so it is difficult to pin point where it started. The reason the brain does not learn is because safety behaviours keep reinforcing that the symptoms represent a genuine threat so it keeps sending the thoughts. Only by gradually reducing safety behaviours can you reduce the thoughts, feelings and physical symptoms but it is very difficult to do and takes a lot of time and will power.

Hi Martin thank you so much for your videos, I find it so reassuring listening to them. I have been a health anxiety sufferer for as long as I can remember, which has been quite tortuous at times. The thing with my anxiety is I avoid going to the doctors, for fear they might confirm all the fears I have been having. I'm scared of having my blood taken or blood pressure readings, which simply results in me festering over my symptoms and convincing myself that I have this life threatening illness. I recently took my blood pressure which came up really high and since then I've been too scared to take it again, ultimately leading myself to now believe I have hypertension, or some other heart disorder. Any advice?

Hi Amina. In my health anxiety playlist you will find a few videos that will help. Use the video on countering negative thoughts to deal with the thoughts that are driving the anxiety. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gtt4eadl1qjTk3k.html. Start journaling and reducing your safety behaviours as described in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9-JppBinK2ulqs.html . Try the exercises in the behavioural experiments video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g651jLh23dyvZIU.html. There is no instant fix for health anxiety but if you use these tools regularly the anxiety should start to reduce of a period over the months.

You’re not alone, I’m taking blood pressure medication since I had my panic attack in 2020. I’ve come to the realization that I have white coat syndrome, an anxious attack during a bp test. I worry that I had heart problems so I went to a cardiologist and I was told that I was normal, but my bp machine said otherwise. I was beginning to get frustrated because I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. Now, I’m more active, I meditate and I’m more connected with the outside world. With my deep breathing exercises I finally get the results I’ve always wanted. My bp results always appear high in the first try, but I relax myself and meditate and the second and third result always come out normal. I always bring my bp journal with me to doctor appointments because I still get nervous when they do it. So if they see it and say something about it I just show them my bp journal. It’s okay to feel nervous, but you’re okay and you’re not in danger. Remind yourself that your not in danger, you’re okay. Focus on the present day, not in the future

Once the anxiety cycle is established the anxiety can start with a thought, feeling or physical symptom. It does not necessarily happen in the order shown in the anxiety cycle diagram. The cycle is going around and around all the time and its hard to pin point what started the anxiety or symptom this time. One thing you can be certain of though is that you will be regularly using safety behaviours and these keep the cycle going.
