Do you wonder why you have health anxiety? In this video I look at the common factors that can cause health anxiety. It is part of a series I am making on what causes anxiety disorders?
Understanding the factors that can cause health anxiety is the first step in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. CBT uses a tool called a formulation to help you understand how past events affect your anxiety in the present. In this video I show you how to make your own formulation.
If you want to try a formulation you can download the form for free here :-

My thanks go to Carol Vivyan of getselfhelp.co.uk for allowing me to use her fantastic resources.

My health anxiety stemmed from my aunt passing away from a heart attack/stroke combo. It was the first close death I’ve ever experienced and it really messed me up and I was afraid I would essentially drop dead from some random illness. I developed a case of mouse shoulder due to my hobbies of being on the computer a lot and was afraid it was my heart. For a year I dealt with very crippling anxiety and through tons of helpful KZfaq videos I’ve mostly overcame this anxiety I dealt with. You can get there, it takes time. Not all time is the same so just keep pushing forward. I didn’t want to live with this my whole life and you shouldn’t either.

My health anxiety started after my mother died from a sudden heart attack. Ever since I have had reoccurring thoughts this would happen to me, which has led to palpitations and some ER visits. Even though it will be a long road, your videos have really helped me ease the symptoms so thank you for putting them out!

This when my health anxiety started when my dad suffered a heart attack and I had to call 911 and watch it all happen. He did survive but was extremely lucky. Ever since then I have noticed randomly heart pain,chest and stomach pain. one night I had a worst chest pain and that’s what started my first panic attack, I actually thought I was dying, I called 911 but they told me they didn’t have anything available at the moment, which made it worse. Feeling absolute doom. I called my dad and he drove me to the hospital and they said I wasn’t having a heart attack just anxiety Ever since then I’ve had a few smaller panic attacks, but I still can’t shake the belief that is it a heart attack even though I’m 22 years old 5’10 185lb not overweight and my diet is decent but not the best or worse.

I am currently exploring this with a therapist but your first point resonates strongly with me! My mother was dismissive of my feelings as a child and emotionally neglectful. I was indirectly taught there are “bad” and “good” emotions, and punished for displaying the “bad” emotions. This made me suppress me emotions and I feel the hormones and chemicals are transferred to my body because they are just stuck because I don’t know how to release them in a healthy way. My therapist is helping me learn to actually deal with my emotions and it has reduced a lot, which help from your videos too!

Your story really resonated with me. My mother did everything for me and my brothers, but she didn't talk to us. She's different now. But for some reason she acted like a robot when we were kids. She would pick me up from school and when I got into the car she wouldn't even say hello. I had dreams that my parents were trying to kill me. I had a lot of pains and most of the time when I mentioned them I was ignored. I think there's a lot to untangle here and I'm really grateful for this channel. It's so different from the others on here.

@@deniseg4028 that’s so terrible you had such traumatic dreams! It’s really shows how deep the emotional neglect embedded into your psyche. After a year of therapy, I am starting to see my mother cannot truly be blamed for her actions as she’s learnt it from somewhere (my grandparents). All I can do is set boundaries and fill my cup elsewhere, but it is heartbreaking that the one person in your life that is meant to love you the most of all, can’t express it 💔

For me it started with chronic nausea and vomiting which lasted more the 2 years straight. The feeling that would never go away sent me into a tail spin and from there I got worse. Then I had eye symptoms and those have now lasted a full year and still going, in the midst of it Ive suffered from heart palpitations, sweating tinitus so bad I couldn't sleep feeling cold just to name a few. I wake every morning with anxiety so high I'm sweating before I open my eyes. I'm now 3 years in and not seeing results as I still have fear it's insane what the body can do.

Problem name: Anxiety If we consider this problem as a "neural vulnerability", I have some suggestions for you. Continuing with the suggestions from the book: 1st suggestion: Thyme is boiled and a glass is drunk. 2st suggestion: Mustard is boiled and a glass is drunk. 3st suggestion: "Lavandula stoechas" is boiled and a glass is drunk. 4st suggestion: With laurel oil, the muscles are massaged. 5st suggestion: 3 grams of "Ruta graveolens" is swallowed daily. 6st suggestion: Eat cabbage or drink a glass of cabbage juice. 7st suggestion: Garlic should be eaten. 8st suggestion: Anise and Eagle wood (Aquilaria agollocha, Agalloch, Bois d'aigle, Calambac) are boiled and a glass is drunk. 9st suggestion: It is cooked and eaten with dehulled wheat chicken meat. 10st suggestion: Sesame oil is drunk in the morning and massaged on the numb areas of the body with sesame oil. 11st suggestion: Chicken broth soup is drunk and almonds are eaten on it. The recommendation of a doctor who says he is an expert in herbal treatment is as follows: A tablespoonful of lavender and half a tablespoonful of dried roses. Put these herbs in a teapot and pour freshly boiled hot water over it and cover it. After half an hour your tea is ready. Cool your tea and drink it with honey. This recommendation is recommended for chronic stress and fear. Another bit of information from the book: To get rid of fear, shyness and disturbing thoughts, 5 grams of powdered cloves are drunk with a glass of milk.

Great content on your channel, I was wondering if I could get your advice on my health anxiety predicament. I explained to the doctor I've been suffering from chest tightness, tension, palpitations etc and they sent me to the hospital where they did an ECG, chest X-ray and the blood test. Everything can back normal, which was reassuring and tbh expected. My hangup is that the Doctor's never entirely reassure you and leave you with enough doubt that you can never trust it's only ever anxiety. I asked the doctor when they have me the all clear "so next time I'm feeling this way, I can trust that my heart is healthy and that I'm suffering from anxiety/panic and treat it as that, and use anxiety tackling techniques?". Instead of getting reassurance they popped the bubble of hope and instead told me "every instance has to be treated on its own merit and if you have worrying symptoms i.e. the anxiety ones we all have, then I should be calling 111 or the doctor or hospital. How can I ever feel confident to tackle this if I need to worry every time it happens?
@TheAnxietyAttic
@TheAnxietyAttic 2 жыл бұрын
Your predicament is very common with health anxiety. An intolerance of uncertainty is what drives health anxiety. Unfortunately we cannot have 100% certainty in life and the more we strive for it the worse the anxiety gets. And the worse anxiety gets the more physical symptoms we get which makes us more uncertain. This is the anxiety cycle and the only way to stop it is to reduce the reassurance seeking behaviours that fuel it and challenge the catastrophic thoughts and beliefs that drive it. This is best done with the help of a therapist. But if you prefer a self help approach, a good exercise to start with is the reassurance seeking behaviour reduction exercise shown in this video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9aDpdd42dLWlX0.html. It will not give you certainty but it will help you reduce your craving for it which should reduce your anxiety and physical symptoms.

Similar thing happened to me. I had constipation cramps and bloating. At the end of 9 months of tests there was no diagnosis. So I changed doctor and finally got a diagnosis of IBS. IBS can cause diarrhea, constipation or both. As soon as I got the diagnosis I was able to manage it myself through diet and have been largely symptom free for years since. Has your doctor mentioned IBS? There are no tests for it so it is diagnosed by exclusion of other conditions.
