My father died from prostate cancer so my Dr. has had me taking PSA tests sin my mid-40's. So far so good, but screening for cancer in all forms is the best chance of beating it. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery.

I am so sorry to hear of your father. I didnt mention in the video but I had a good day or to where I went though "survivors guilt" strange really but throughout the diagnosis I kept on walking in the countryside near my home and found a particular walk that I would do and think and make sense of what I was facing. Once i was fit enough to do this again some 3 months after surgery I went there alone thinking it would complete the circle going with the mindset of its all over. It had the opposite effect and brought all the anxiety back along with how come I have been lucky, and have I really been lucky. I think its just my subconscious making sense of it all.
@Lunalysis

@@MyRetroWatches I think the luck in your case was convincing your doctor to get you the test in the first place. Everything after that was science and medicine. You could also say you were lucky to have discovered it now, rather than 30 or 40 years ago when most treatments were either ineffectual or worse than the disease. Don't think of it as being lucky to survive and be declared "cured", but instead, think if it as contributing to an ever-increasing medical database to make future treatments even better, with less impact on the patient. And speaking openly and honestly about your experience increases the chance for others to catch a disease before it has the chance to kill them. Thank you for that.

Mike, you can be that "Stuck record" as you called it. It could even be a new mission in life. Personally, I was blown away by your honesty and openness about the aftereffects of your surgery. You said some things about the types and levels of cancer that I never knew about and I've worked with people in my past who were diagnosed with prostrate cancer and they never went into as deep of an explanation as you have here today. Screening should be mandatory after a certain age, surely it would save the NHS money in the long term? Your courage is outstanding, thanks for this upload.. 👍

I think a lot of guys just don’t want to talk about it. Especially if they have gone through it . To tell people you set yourself and have little control and then might not get it back up again could be shameful or embarrassing. Also makes you feel less like a man. How I feel sometimes. The reality is if you have PC then there is cures but every path out leaves you with problems which I feel angry about at times. It’s bad enough to have cancer and treatment but then to find out your left with life long problems as a reminder.. Men should be told of these issues as it can scare some into being proactive with their health.

Well-spoken mate. I've just turned 70 and about 5 years ago I had my first PSA test added to my yearly cholesterol check and the numbers came back fine. My doc's finger still became intimate with my inner self though, which was a little embarrassing at the time, but it was over in no time and with no discomfort. The experience was something I could laugh about later with my mates and was an excuse to urge them to get themselves checked also. September 2023-asked for Man’s Health Check-by-passed the Doctor and asked nurse to also do a PSA. Nurse said would likely get nothing conclusive but would do one. PSA 310-Biopsy of 32 cores. Gleason 5+4=9. Just in middle of Chemotherapy along with ADT. Get a test and don’t take NO for a doctor’s answer. Age 79 - otherwise was perfectly healthy. PSA now down to 0.44

Talking to the camera is not easy and about such a personal and sensitive subject is even harder. The information you just gave about prostrate cancer was excellent. Making the film was made possible by your love of sharing watches and watch mending. Without one the other would not have been made. I'm sure you will have made a difference to many listening to your explanations about how important getting tested is. Well done! I know the importance of blood tests and checking for PSA. I have mine tested every 12 months. This is because my brother had the same operation that you had and I was advised to keep up the blood tests yearly. It's still early days after your operation and I'm pretty sure in the fullness of time the setbacks will improve for you. All the best in the "Santa Run".

Michael-just found your video. Great news that you are cancer free . I was diagnosed in may 2023 psa 56 . On ADT and just had radiation therapy- which was no problem at all. I feel great and I have decided to give this my best shot to cure this. The prostate should be done now-next job to go for the little mets in my lymph node’s. It is crazy that we don’t get our psa screening in the uk. Hopefully we won’t be getting any more videos on prostate cancer and as I subscribe I will learn a bit about watch restoration. ( I am doing a bike ride for prostate cancer in the summer and will check out your just giving for your run) Good luck

Thank you and good luck with your journey. I did a first video around 6 week post surgery and this one a year later . August 2024 I will do my 2 year update. In this time I have done a lot of awareness and work with Prostate cancer uk. It’s the only positive thing I can do from the negative of having cancer

Thank you Mike. A very personal experience told with an astonishingly candid honesty. May I suggest you create a post on WatchCrunch to the same effect with a link to your just giving page. Some great people there who I'm sure would be generous in their support. Keep the videos coming and, more importantly, stay positive and get back to 100%.

Excellent video re Prostate cancer. Had mine removed in September 2021 at the age of 67 by the same method as yourself. I had had symptoms for a number of years and saw my GP as soon as the symptoms started. Now having PSA tests every six months. Water works are now good. I think because my GP kept a check on my prostate ie regular PSA tests etc. I always felt that at some point I was going to develop prostate cancer and therefore I wasn’t shocked when I was told that I had developed the disease. Keep positive. Look forward to following your progress and watching your videos.

Pleased for you Ian. I feel cheated at 50 to deal with this and those side effects. Now the constant worry of a return due to my T3A diagnosis. My consultant is a man of very few words which is not encouraging. For now I stay positive. My PSA test is tomorrow… (nervous already)

Hope all goes well tomorrow and hopefully the results will be available before the weekend. After my prostate was removed and sent for biopsy it was found that the cancer cells went up to the edge of the prostate where it had been attached and that there was a possibility that not all cancer cells were removed. However, none of my PSA tests have shown any sign of cancer. After watching you on You Tube I am for the first time attempting to replace the quartz mechanism in one of my watches. So far no disasters. 🤞will finish tomorrow. Take care.

Thank you . I have found talking about it always helped me. This video is to help anyone out there watching but also still helps me. talking stops me thinking. Thinking alone and for too long at least for me always goes to the negative and dark side of "what if "

Thanks for this message, Mike. Your articulate candour is much appreciated. Perhaps a good analogy to your message is changing your car’s oil regularly. Many guys feel a responsibility to keep the car maintained because the whole family depends on it. Similarly, our kids, partners, families, coworkers and communities depend on us, and this obliges us to maintain our ability to continue to contribute. So, next time I see my doctor, I’ll setup the next appointment at that visit.

Until you mentioned Prostate Cancer UK, earlier on in the series, I'd never heard of them. I now have one of their little pin-badges on my jacket. You may recall that I wrote saying I'd had brachytherapy for prostate cancer, earlier this year - this was my second time around with the disease, having first had it about 15 years back, and had radiotherapy - when there were just two choices, surgery, or frying it with x-rays. I owe my support to my (now deceased) wife, who put up with all the sulks and hiding from the world, and Macmillan nurses, who would answer all my questions, no matter how obscure, searching, or intimate. I'm pleased that you had the courage to discuss the side effects - the loss of function, because a lot of men just don't want to know. They seem to think that because it won't stand up any more, they aren't men. I suppose it's the equivalent of a woman who has had a mastectomy, so doesn't think she's a woman any more. I don't wish to concern you, but I never regained the ability to achieve even half an erection, although at 72, and a widower, I'm not concerned about that. I don't normally have leakage problems, but I have found that when I have to 'go', I have to go right then! So if I'm out anywhere, I make sure I know where the toilets are! - With the benefit of hindsight, my first symptom was that I was tired all the time. I had absolutely no other signs, so put it down to pressures of work, and a job-change. Until the morning when I went to the bathroom after getting up (bit tricky the other way around!) - took aim - and nothing happened - until a little trickle began, that slowly built up to full flow, then faded off again to a dribbly trickle. I thought maybe I'd overdone the 'team press-ups' the night before, and it would sort itself out. Of course it didn't, so I went to the Doc, thinking I'd somehow strained myself. That started my merry-go-round of blood tests, x-rays, mri scans and some other scan where they injected a nuclear short-life isotope into my blood, then photographed me to see where it collected. (apparently it collects in cancerous cells), biopsies, and all the rest. So far, I'm still here. Occasionlly, friends ask how I've been, and I usually reply - "I woke up this morning, so it's a good day!" Sometimes I add - "The day I don't, it's too late to worry about it!"

Hopefully your PSA is now negligible. I never fancied radiation and hormone therapy, it was an option but due to my age they recommended surgery. The realisation that things would not work again really messed with my head but what was the choice… hoping with one nerve bank something might happen one day but so far nothing .

@@MyRetroWatches 0,1 on the last six monthly check. I hope yours stays low as well - the psa, that is! 🙂 You might regain some function after a while, but don't bank on it. As my wife said - she'd rather have me than sex. In the event I got neither, because inoperable lung cancer took her from me, in 2011.
