In episode 46, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and journalist Jo Confino talk about healthy boundaries. In this busy and complex world is it possible to remain open and vulnerable whilst also ensuring our safety and protection? This question is answered via stories from the Buddha’s time and Thich Nhat Hanh’s life and teachings, as well as from the presenters’ own life experiences.
Brother Phap Huu further shares about practicing awareness; the two protectors: the warrior and the bodhisattva; teaching and the importance of understanding those you teach; deep listening and loving speech; friendships that end and being OK with someone not loving us; setting boundaries with people who have passed away; and creating a bodhisattva heart. Also, if there’s no self, why are we protecting it?
Jo shares about courage and communication; speaking the truth; protecting ourselves from abusive behavior; loving people from a distance; change and shifting boundaries; and the power of presence.
The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu.

It's nice to hear thay voice "the way out is in" he is so present in my life and has been for many years. I am so grateful for you in these podcasts for more understanding of how to transform my suffering. I have volunteered in the Thai Buddhist temple teaching English to the monks and other things years ago. Now that we have smart phones it is easier for them to learn on their own and more monks are English speakers. I am so glad that you speak of that the Buddha was a human being and that there is no violence in your teachings. I listen and practice every day. I am becoming the mountain. Thank you so much for all you do to help me take care of my suffering. Peace Marley

Thank you so much for sharing the teachings with us. I have a very hard time with boundaries and push myself beyond my bounds to the point that I abandon me…sometimes I want to be NOT me: more kind, more understanding, more whatever so that I can do the “right” thing in a situation as if it were an abstract, given thing. I didn’t realize that i was failing to recognize who I am RIGHT NOW, and embrace my limitations. Thank you

Br. Phap Huu and Jo thank you for this new episode. It has touched me very especially, I just retired, my last 25 years, by vocation, I was dedicated to teaching and Thay's teachings helped me to enjoy my work, contact with adolescents is not always easy and thanks to mindfulness my last 9 years as a teacher I was able to transmit Thay's wisdom in workshops for teachers. Listening to you, Br. Phap Huu, my heart was filled with joy, because on a small scale and with my limitations, I feel that I have collaborated with these healthy boundaries that are so necessary for education. Thank you 🪷🙏

The two of you make a great duo. You compliment each other very well. Joe your story about your isolated colleague at The Guardian made me very sad. A man in my circle of acquaintance is going through the same issue. When schedule changes were offered, everyone got the ones they requested. He got ignored and had to keep pushing. When promotional opportunities were offered, he was snubbed even the opportunity of an interview. No one privately conferred with him as to why he couldn’t qualify and what would be necessary for him to qualify. Like your colleague this man has experienced a decline in optimism and hope at that workplace. He’s seeking opportunities elsewhere. It’s passive aggressive and a total disregard to boundaries to expect others to mind read & not communicate expectations. I agree to that expectations must be communicated with tact so as to help & not humiliate the individual. Thank you, Brother Phap Huu and Joe, for these podcasts.

With gratitude I loved this lively podcast. I think it has so many ideas and right views regarding how one can put into practice and de escalate hard situations and tak care of oneself and others and make something sustainable out of the situation. I was listening in a time of a bit of illness pain and a real feeling of sensitivity, enoying the breaks, when just before the Aguli Marla i thought " i need to turn it off now!" then i understood as the serial killer bit came on ...lol lucky i did not judge myself for that sudden negative thought!

In the magic of each moment, Love blooms like a red flower, Eyes open to the wonder, Of raindrops falling like a shower. Clouds dance in the sky above, A reminder of our infinite nature, Beyond the limits of our minds, A vastness we can't measure. So let us cherish each moment, With love as our guiding light, And see the beauty all around us, In the darkness and the light. For magic is not just in the fairy tales, But in each breath we take, And if we look with open eyes, We'll find wonder everywhere. So let us dance in the rain, And embrace the clouds so free, For in this moment we are alive, And that's where we're meant to be.

Thank you so much for this and all the podcasts. They are beautiful and much appreciated. I have a few questions about monastic names and wondered if it might be of interest to others too. How are the monastic names formed? How does the Vietnamese form translate to the English form? Phap and Nghiem seem like common elements, what do they mean? Thank you for all the hard work. I appreciate the conditions which come together to bring each podcast to us. 🙏

Hello, Dear Brother Phap Huu and Jo Confino. I enjoyed listening to you today but I didn't think (or I didn't get it) that the initial question on how "to be open and vulnerable and sure that we are safe and protected" was answered. Could you please send me some insights to get that? Thanks. Lotuses and Smiles. Regina
