Did you know hearing aids can now do some pretty cool things besides allowing you to hear better and stream wireless Bluetooth audio and phone calls? Audiologist Matthew Allsop looks at 5 features that you may not know about in the designs of the latest hearing aids. He details how certain models of hearing aids can use motion sensors to improve their speech enhancement and noise reduction features, function as health trackers and step counters, allow for tap controls, and even immediately contact people if it detects you’ve fallen.
And that’s just for starters! Matthew also explains how the Starkey Thrive app has employed a live translation feature for 27 different languages, and how Phonak has used its ActiveVent technology to toggle between an open or closed fitting-meaning it can move between providing both the most natural sound and the strongest/richest acoustic signals depending on your listening situation. He also explains how telecoils work and the benefits they bring, as well how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning is improving hearing in millions of unique sound environments.

This is a terrific video, Matthew. I routinely use several of the features mentioned here so can testify to their usefulness. Since we just met @CES, a relevant story. I was first fitted with Phonak Marvels just ahead of CES 2019. They were so new the app wasn't even ready yet. On night a bunch of us were walking down the Strip when I felt a tug on my collar. When I turned around to see what it was, a colleague behind me commented that my hearing aids must not be working because he had called to me 3 times. I realized on the spot that the noise of the Strip had caused the mics to focus forward. At that time I had to have my AuD program the omni mode so I could force it with the device buttons. Now my newer Audeo Life does it automatically via the inertial sensor you discussed. A useful feature for sure. I won't go on except to mention that I routinely use the inertial sensor's tap feature too, as in (2 taps) "call xxx" or "send a text to xxx."

Mathew I have to say as someone who has used hearing for over 45 years, the Telecoil is not at all what it advertises to be. I’ve so often been disappointed by it; movie cinemas, trains etc all an upsetting and upsetting experience. They’re are very sensitive to reception; very dependent on where you are sitting and often very poorly maintained/monitored. The people who set up the loops have no idea what they are doing nor how to fix the various issues. It’s old technology which really needs to die out and be replaced with Bluetooth/streaming technology. The Bitterness is not an overreaction - it’s simply a result of many experiences of having nights ruined by promised hearing aid assistance only to result in me going home being left out of it.

I saw a video put out by a group of British acoustic engineers who tested a bunch of telecoil installations. Their findings were that about 20% of them were working properly.

Hey Natasha, yes you're right. A telecoil is only as good as how well it is maintained, and sadly not everywhere maintains them well. When it does work it is great! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Matthew

I am think the Live Translation by Starkey would be real helpful for many situations. Especially if it could auto detect the language, stream it directly into your ear the translation in your native language. Then ask you what you would like to say back to he person. Then give you how to say what you would like to say, and stream it he translation, into Hebrew for example. Then you just speak what you heard in your HA's to person. That would be a help tool in your hearing aids. Especially if you ha a job that has you traveling to other countries or even on the Phone to o her Countries.

You do not mention Oticon"s neural network, which by advertisement implies that it does a lot of the directional hearing and music hearing benefits automatically. Is that correct? Health features are another thing that it clearly does not have and it would be nice to have.

Your explanation and examples of how the accelerometer would work in conversation would be completely wrong for my requirements. As a person who is totally blind I would most definitely need to converse with someone leading me from the front and to the side. Furthermore, I was trained to turn my head towards people when speaking with them, particularly in a static conversation, so my question is this. Is the device going to actually learn what my specific requirements are, or will it be limited by the assumptions built in by the manufacturer?
@HearingTracker
@HearingTracker Жыл бұрын
Hey Kylee, that’s a great question and I think you would still benefit from this tech from what you’ve described. However they won’t continually learn and automatically tailor themselves to the user no. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Matthew

The Telecoil debate rages on... I had a telecoil at home... it was terrible. I also found that it was very rare to find an effective telecoil at tills etc, they would be badly positioned mics, or mics under the counter., not switched on or just totally useless. mentioning this would frequently get an irritated response. Since getting More 1's a year ago I just don't need that kind of support ever.

Hi Bob! You're right in the sense that a telecoil is only as effective as how well its used and maintained. I'm sorry to hear about your experiences, but thank you for sharing them. Matthew

You are obviously a big fan of Telecoil. But when Auracast, BT 5.2/5.3 and LC3 Codec become available in all hearing aids (P.S. When, oh when, will THAT happen? We've been waiting TOO long already!) won't Telecoil be out-dated technology?
@HearingTracker
@HearingTracker Жыл бұрын
Hey Bob, haha! Busted you’re right. Ive had so much positive feedback from people using it! I’ve also recorded an intro to auracast video and have yet to put it up. This will take public space broadcasting to the next level, but it won’t happen overnight. Sadly, I think that it will be a while before it’s available in all venues. I hope I’m wrong on this, but the cost plus the fact that loop systems are in place may mean that it’s not at the top of the priority list for businesses. Thanks for your thoughts, Matthew
