Different players focus on different aspects of the game, and that's fine. Sam just seems to be more interested in the stuff that's not on the sheets, but between the players. As I've grown older as a roleplayer, I find that I care less and less about stats and features and dice-rolling, and just want to get to - what is for me - the good stuff, namely telling a good story and having a good time with the others around the table.

Okay but the person she confessed that to was Orym. A lot of this group has confessed to not having fallen in love yet or having strong emotional connections to others that arent blood (and sometimes not even that). And right now the only two that know are Orym and a high chance of Imogen due to her strong connection to her. I think it it perfect because Orym is the only one in the group that we know went through something that could deeply hurt her, loosing Imogen/facing the reality she could loose her. And I'm not saying that type of pain/trauma is worse and I won't play that game but since we don't know what happened with Laudna's family and she has been chased out and unable to make connections sense being brought back it is a different type of trauma and pain to face and when she does the one other person that knows what she went through and her feelings on it can be there so this time she doesn't have to grow through it alone if that fear is brought up to face.

It's the job of every good DM to torture the characters, and we all know Matt is a good DM. I mean come on your biggest trauma can't be in your back story you're a PC not supporting cast. If the worst was past we'd be playing that game and this would be your "happily ever after".

Pretty sure they came to that rough realization when they found out that Laudna was undead and “D” was first brought up. This conversation just confirms it, especially after the public release of that hang-tree scene from the animated series. So it’s still fresh in their minds. I just want to know what Taliesin was saying to Marisha afterwards!!! I can’t read lips 😅

I love how each of Liam’s character in the three campaigns represent a very distinct kind of sadness. Vax was relatively happy early on, regardless of his backstory. But then his arc took an emotional turn and we saw him going through stages of grief. In the end, he became the tragic hero, the only one without a happily ever after. Meanwhile, Caleb started as a tragic character already laden with grief it literally paralyzed him. But in the campaign, we saw him going through the process of healing. His story became one of overcoming past trauma. And now with Orym, it seems like he began right where Caleb ends- acceptance of grief. His resigned sadness when talking about his husband will resonated with anyone who has lost someone. His grief didn’t go away. Instead, it became a part of who he is and what drives him to move forward. I know most of us like to make fun of Liam for playing sad characters but damn he’s just so good at it.

@@normak7041 - FCG has a diamond for revivify to bring someone back to *life.* But *animate* dead turns a corpse into an Undead creature, like a zombie. That's very different from *raise* dead; it doesn't restore a soul, it just uses the body as your servant. Unlike most characters, FCG doesn't believe they have a soul. Maybe they don't see necromancy as evil? Definitely interesting possibilities for where this goes, but someone may need to sit FCG down and explain that "ensouled" creatures think it's not cool to create undead. Shez might be right about Laudna, though, that's also very plausible. Or Sam just extracted a list of spell components without reading the spell descriptions. (Given that Sam didn't know two of the party members were sorcerers, I think he could have seen the spell name without realizing it was the bad kind of necromancy. He seems to maintain a willful ignorance of much of D&D.) Well spotted on the spell component, BTW, @Stephen. I was looking through lower-level cleric spells and saw that blood alone is needed for Bane, quite a useful spell, but didn't look for the rest of today's requests.

Marisha's detailing of Laudna's backstory is such a magnificent moment, the way she delivered that was phenomenal........ If they ever get to have this campaign turned into a animated series....that scene right here....the freaking power it would hold....

I think with the success (so far) of c1 it's likely we will get a c2 show, but there is still SO much left to see in c1. And animated shows are very expensive

I love this. I was doing something similar with my character arylo. Her adoptive mother is just an undeadarchfey who wanted a play thing for horrific experiments. And now that im free from that abuse i want to live the life. Or at least thats how i envisioned her. So far its been just wierd encounters

@@toshomni9478 Fostering a rebellion was entirely Vox Machina's doing in the C1 game. It was a major part of the plan they came up with to provide a distraction, aid and cover so they could slip into the castle and unlike the animated show it wouldn't have happened without their direct involvement. While all the players did RP that their characters cared about the civilians - when shit started hitting the fan most of the group started focusing purely on the "game play objective" as it were. Matt peppered in allusions to civilians dying throughout their push to the castle and intimated a few times that certain decisions they were contemplating may result major collateral damage but since these were just nameless background NPCs it was mostly being glossed over. It was Marisha that kept bringing this up, and that they were the reason civilians were fighting and dying, while the other players were often just not thinking about it given the more immediate gameplay concerns. I believe it was when they were fleeing the tide of bone that Keyleth was the one who, when the others wouldn't stop to help the npcs, did so herself to force the group to save them. From a pure gameplay point of view it potentially wasn't a good move since saving random groups of unnamed NPC's didn't actually offer any obvious immediate benefit, which I think is why most of the group just kept glossing over it. But Marisha was trying to do something narratively focused rather than gameplay focused, similar to Sam pushing to try save that random guard a couple episodes ago in C3.

@@captivatingheir season one spoilers obviously, but when pike died in pre-stream games, she was brunette haired, then when resurrected, her hair changed colors. There is president that a being brought back has their hair change colors in this game world. Also, IIRC, the one who had the antlers attached and ears pointed, to represent keyleth also had red paint in the hair. So it could yet be Keyleth?

I know we talk a lot about everyone strengths here on emotional delivery and the like, but I think its a good thing to showcase Travis's amazing player etiquette on display here. Despite Chetney being a very acerbic and excitable character, when Liam starts dropping his heavy backstory his tone shifts entirely. Becoming sympathetic, kind, complimentary and sad. @@abbykiehn865 I don't want to spoil too much cuz it's really good, but basically Marisha's backstory relates to heavy C1 plot stuff that shocked everyone. If you want real SPOILERS, reas on... Laudna's warlock patron, Delilah, was a major villain in campaign 1, a powerful necromancer who decimated the village of Whitestone, where a lot of the campaign took place. When the party arrived in Whitestone, they were met with 6 citizens hung from trees who were costumed to look like each member of the party. It was disturbing. Turns out Laudna was one of the human corpses used for the welcoming party.

I just remembered a scene from EXU, when the party was at Gilmore's. Orym was looking to buy a Sentinel Shield, but was reticent about leaving his own shield behind, saying that it "has a lot of sentimental value". So he had Gilmore enchant _it_ with the Sentinel traits instead. Perhaps Orym's shield used to belong to Will and that's why it's so meaningful to him...

The scene at 3:40:00 hit me really hard because I lost my fiancé almost 6 six years ago. Time really does seem to creep and fly by at the same time. It feels like you were just holding them yesterday, but when you are looking back, 6 years feels like a lifetime. The grief, it feels like a boulder; a crushing weight that you can't ever put down, but after a while you get used to the pressure. Liam does a great job of portraying that in Orym, Chet wasn't the only one crying by the end of it.

In vox machina they literally said that her nemesis are undeads and people trying to cheat death. And even at the ball at this campaign, the general dancing with Laudna showed her a symbol of the raven queen (duskmaven if I remember correctly in marquet) as way to show his disdain

@@pepperypeppers2755 Delilah might not have directly granted her her life as a Hollow One, but everyone who died in Whitestone at the time were said to rise as undead. That was part of Delilah's influence on the land. We also never saw what happened to the Sun Tree farmers, only that they'd been cut down and disappeared. There's a chance that Delilah's soul latched onto Laudna's undead corpse and made it a Hollow One that way, or that Laudna was already a Hollow One and Delilah latched onto her after. Delilah might have found her interesting since Laudna was already a sorcerer born with innate magic, or maybe that's coincidental too. I don't know how far it goes. What I mean by Delilah having "control" of her in undeath is the relationship between a warlock and patron. I'd be interested to see if it goes beyond that.

The queen fulfills a function, but doesn't go around telling bees to do this or that, they just... do it, in accordance with their function. But beyond that, I think xilliaz was more making a point that having an assertive man is less acceptable than having an assertive woman (gender bias). Whether that's a legitimate complaint or not is another story (that is, I'm pretty sure Travis intentionally made a parody character so shutting down his character's "alpha wolf" talk isn't to be taken seriously because the character isn't meant to be taken seriously).

Mad respect to Liam for giving himself a point of exhaustion. It's an odd coincidence but I had a very similar experience just last night where I couldn't sleep after a friend told me a traumatic story about someone hurting them. That little moment in the episode hit so hard emotionally because of it and reminded me just how great at RP these guys truly are.

FCG saying he was having problems processing things yesterday after dropping down to verrry low health was such a wonderful gameplay choice. He never said he was low on health or needed healing, but started acting off as soon as they got out of the stressful situation. Which is such a mood.

@@georgercop I'd bet on Vex's because Kiki's also had holes in her head for getting antlers nailed to it. Though in the end whether it's Kiki or Vex's body-double is really an irrelevant detail imo. Both girls were just innocent impoverished peasants at the (non-existent) mercy of the Briarwoods.

THIS is the best episode of the season so far. Campfire confessional's needs to be a thing. Orym is working his way through the group learning about them is some of the best RPing from this campaign. Almost cried twice with that. Liam is amazing and Marsha as always is just the best with her character.

Yeah, a lot of times the less action type episodes aren't as interesting to me, but every once in a while you get a travel episode that ends up almost entirely focused on roleplay and lore like this. They end up even more interesting than the plot motion. Sure doing their things in town were important and interesting, but eventually those things get left behind. Backstory like today is always going to be there and influence the things that they do.

@@aquament I'm leaning Vex as well. Remember Vex had fur lining in her blouse, and Laudna wanted a dress that reminded her of the "fancy women back home in Tal'dorei". She was remembering the one time she dressed like a fancy woman of Tal'dorei, AKA Vex. Also, Marisha made a point of having Laudna show her clipped ears, but didn't bother to show if she had holes in her forehead from where antlers would've been nailed in.

god i love this weird little group. i love how trusting and open they are with each other, even with ppl they barely know lol. i love that so many of their conversations go like "heres some fucked up shit that happened to me" "damn thats some real fucked up shit, im so sorry and also i will now kill and die for you" its refreshing as hell to see their characters commiserate over their traumas and similar experiences

There's literally nothing else happening and there is nowhere to and nothing to do. You just sit there on watch and players have no choice but to start opening up.

In the theater, you could feel everyone's breath taken away. Then everyone started to freak the fuck out including me. Such a horrifically beautiful moment. The campfire lookouts make for the best character interactions and moments.
