He is not exactly a Corporal, the Guards have a different ranking system and because sergeant means servant they do not use that rank in the Guards, hence the rank Corporal of Horse

The Household Cavalry don't have sergeants. Their equivalent rank is "Corporal of Horse." Apparently Queen Victoria thought the word "sergeant" sounded too much like "servant," and decided it was beneath her lifeguards. 🙃

@@monicawarner4091 well at the time to be an officer in the regiment you had to be "of the aristocracy" so yeah, referring to a peer by a word that sounded like "servant" might have been an issue to Victoria who was always VERY aware of positions and relative hierarchies.

I did wonder why a Corporal had three stripes.

I do wish commenters knew the difference between a ''Worn Rank'' and an ''Operational Appointment''. If CoH is confusing you, don't go anywhere near the Navy. The Navy appoints quite a range of different ranks as ''Ship's Captain''. Oh and most Sergeant Majors in the British Arky and most Commonwealth Armies do not wear stripes at all. Don’t be silly, why would a rude tourist thank a guard for their service? It’s quite obvious these people think the guards are there to entertain them. A lot of people dislike Americans, and yet we found the American people respect service men and women no matter what country they are from. My husband was in the Royal Australian navy for 23 years, when ever we went to America for a holiday and he wore a hat or a T-shirt with the navy insignia, people would come up to him and thank him for he’s service. In Pearl Harbour, the tour guide asks if there are any military personnel in the group, and then he proceeds to thank them for their service. They respect the service men and women from all over the world.

Corporal of horse is a rank equivalent to sergeant and unique to the household cavalry, originally even the lowest members of the household cavalry were gentlemen and rank sergeant comes from the word servant, being that no gentleman would be another gentlemans servant the household cavalry don't have sergeant's

If you watch a horse in a field, they will often stand still for lengthy periods, relaxing or sleeping, maybe just shifting from foot to foot, occasionally swishing their tail. The Guard horses stand for an hour, three days a week, taking turn and turn about - not strenuous or unnatural in and of itself, except they are 'dressed' and in an unnatural environment. Most soon get used to it, some take pleasure in it. The rest of the time they are in stables, being ridden, being trained, out at grass, on holiday ... a good healthy active routine. It is well recognised that being 'on guard' can be difficult for some horses - a psychological strain. It used to be that many of the horses would be so relaxed that they would take the opportunity to doze off and had to be nudged awake by their rider, but in recent years far fewer of them do this, due to tourists being so stupid, noisy and badly behaved. Nowadays some of the horses learn naughty tricks such as pulling off people's jackets/jumpers with their mouths, and who can blame them!

CoH aren't known for being cheery in the main. They're busy people with a lot of responsibilities. They're not there to be nice, they're there to ensure that things run as they should, and that the image presented is a credit to their regiment. For him to smile and wave is a big deal.

Somewhat risky with such little ones. They were so good and the memory is in their heads.

Horses and mounted guards change every hour and the horse guards parade opens from 10 am - 4pm.

Quite honestly, some of us adore watching these videos and we are delighted by a smile or a wave. If such small happenings make us happy, leave us to enjoy the moment.

CoH waved the tint tourists through to be in a good spot when there is a guard change...too small to see anything from the front..that is what he did..he beckoned the carers through to the Courtyard away from the crowds...noisy stupid frowd..

Someone has already explained this. He is not a Sergeant, he is a Corporal of horse. The household Cavalry don't have sergeants.

In any other regiment he would be a sergeant, but in this regiment sergeants are called corporal of horse.
