This week, learn how to forage for elderflowers and make some delicious from scratch elderflower recipes with me. I make elderflower cordial, elderflower Basque cheesecake, strawberry sauce, and a sparkling strawberry limeade flavored with elderflowers. It was also an incredibly tough week as we dealt with a raccoon attack on our flock of chickens. Thank you so much for your kindness and love as we move forward with this loss.

I am so sorry for your loss , although I have never raised chickens , my grandma had a flock of "" girls "" as she called them ! I can still recall the bond she had with them and every summer we spent with her was magical ! We learned to care for the girls , feeding , watering , scooping poop and collecting their eggs . I still have and use her wire egg basket and special crock that was used to preserve eggs in waterglass over the winter when as grandma would say "" the girls needed a vacation "" so eggs were scarce ! Once in a while , one would disappear and she would tell us "" that darned fox must have got her "" and until later years we never realized that the wonderful chicken dinner and subsequent pot of soup came from the missing hen ! After all we were city kids and I think she felt the need to shield us somewhat ! The "" deed "" was done by my grandfather because grandma didn't have the heart ! As she would say "" it's part of farming , but farmers have hearts too ""! thanks for your lovely offerings , you always evoke a memory or two that makes me smile !!!

Oh my goodness - this made me giggle!! I love this story so much. We also raise Cornish-cross chickens for meat, so I completely understand how your grandma felt. I couldn't agree more. The hardest part of being a farmer is dealing with animal loss and butchering day. Thank you so much for sharing this with me and watching!

Your sigh at the end of the video spoke volumes. It was so very sad to hear what happened to your chickens. I thank God the little kittens weren't killed in a similar fashion. Life is bitter and it is sweet. Thank you for sharing this reality in your life. They are your pets and deserved to be mourned over. God bless you and keep you safe from harm.

I just found your beautiful channel, I’m a retired chef. Your amazing produce and your handling of it is to be commended. I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful birds, I’d be distraught myself. I understand that’s nature. But I’m afraid I get emotionally attached to quickly. I have a dog called Connor, he’s a Moodle, (Maltese / Poodle, and is about to have his 18th birthday. Love this tartan dress! The baby chickens/turkey are so sweet. Aw. Love watching you cook and bake forever. :) I think this is the first time I have watched a chicken lay an egg. I have seen chickens and eggs in person, but never seen the process of an egg coming out of a hen. Cute bottles by the way! I am sorry to hear of the racoon issue! That is dreadful! I wish I could smell what you are cooking!!

I'm so sorry about your flock. We lost our entire flock to a racoon last Fall and it took me 6 months to get up the courage to get more chicks. We've been raising chickens for 14 years. I understand your heartache. 😞

I too would have been devastated losing my hens. Why do the hunters/scavengers always take the whole lot! Can never understand it. I also used to live on a farm and had chickens and a strawberry patch, as well as my cows for milk - what a life. Enjoy yours to the fullest despite the heartache every now and again. Thank you so much. It is certainly interesting how some animals will just take what they want/need to eat and leave the rest. This was that style of attack - we found all of the bodies scattered around with parts missing, which was how we identified the raccoon. I have always dreamed of having a family dairy cow. Maybe someday!

I made this year's batch of elder flower cordial just a few hours ago. I tried adding a couple table spoons of lemon & lime marmelade this time as a "secret" ingredient, not sure it made a huge difference but still tastes good!

My mom had a small flock that was killed by a raccoon. It didn’t eat them, just killed them and left the bodies. Mom was horrified and called it “murder” because the attacker didn’t eat them. ☹️ I’m so sorry you had this happen to your flock, too.
