www.Heart-Valve-Surgery.com - Patients diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation have several important considerations specific to their treatment options. A critical consideration for patients is the use of traditional or minimally-invasive techniques to access the heart, repair the mitral leaflets, fix the annulus and/or correct other cardiac disorders which may include atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, and multiple valve disorders (e.g. tricuspid regurgitation).
In this video, we interview Dr. Marc Gerdisch, a leading mitral valve surgeon and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Gerdisch has performed thousands of successful mitral valve procedures using new technologies to minimize patient pain, shorten hospital stays and accelerate patient recovery.
Key questions asked to Dr. Gerdisch during this video include:
1. What is mitral valve disease?
2. Is mitral regurgitation common?
3. What are the symptoms and risks of mitral regurgitation?
4. What are the treatment options for patients?
5. What are the benefits of mitral valve repair vs mitral valve replacement?
6. Do all surgeons perform mitral valve repair? Why or why not?
7. Can the procedure be performed using minimally invasive techniques? If so, how?
8. What are the advantages of minimally invasive techniques for your patients?
9. Can you talk about why and how you treat the tricuspid valve during mitral valve surgery? Are both the mitral and tricuspid valves treated using minimally-invasive techniques?
10. What is your number one piece of advice for patients needing mitral and/or tricuspid valve repair?

I got a referral to a surgeon, he was taking to about open heart surgery in order to fix my leaky valve and when I asked him about the mitral valve clip procedure, he said that procedure is for older people since I'm only 53, he would only recommend open heart surgery which I'm really scared of the open heart surgery to fix my leaky valve.

I had minimally invasive mitral vale repair in 2010. I am well and active now. I had atrial fib after the surgery. Took meds for a year. Then doc took me off meds. Question…is is uncommon to develop a fib after surgery? I didn’t know to expect that. Wouldn’t have changed my mind about the surgery… best decision my cardiologist helped me to make!

I have a leaky valve and I’m terrified, I’m a single father of a 7 year old girl and I’m terrified of dropping dead in front of her, and I can’t leave her she needs me, I’m out of breath constantly and getting palpitations all the time, I live in the UK and the NHS has massive problems right now, I’m on a waiting list, I wish I lived in America and had health insurance, I can’t think to the future as I don’t know what’s gonna come, and I’m terrified for my daughter, I wish I was rich and could get this operation done, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I was once the British champion freestyle wrestler, I’m still relatively fit, ( until I started getting shortness of breath) I’m absolutely shocked that this has happened to me, I consider my self strong and brave, but ever since the symptoms have got far worse I look at my daughter while she’s asleep and feel like I’m gonna cry, I realise I’m not the brave strong guy I always thought

Can minimally invasive mitral valve repair be done in someone who has previously had open heart surgery ? I had a quadrangular resection of the posterior leaflet 16 years ago but the MR has recurred and is now severe. If a further repair can be done by a minimal invasive technique, I would be interested in this option. Any recomendations in New Zealand where I live ?

My first echo was a month ago and shows that I have mitral regurgitation and showed moderate to severe. My second echo show moderate regurgitation not severe but shows moderate in the aortic valve as well. Is it normal for a valve to show moderate to severe in one echo then just show moderate in the second? But what happens if I have moderate in 2 valves at the same time?
@HeartValveSurgery
@HeartValveSurgery 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jlady, You raise a great question. In the past, we have heard of patients getting different echocardiogram results. However, this is typically not a result of the heart valve getting "healthier" given the nature of structural heart disease (which is progressive). More times than not, this can be a result of variable technician interpretations of the images seen during the echocardiogram. Have you thought about asking your medical team this specific question? We imagine your medical team may want to perform another echocardiogram to know - with certainty - the current state of your mitral valve. You may even want to invite your cardiologist to the echocardiogram so that they know exactly what is happening with your mitral valve. Hope this helps!

So yesterday I had a TEE and a heart cath. Some of the notes state mild MR at most. This was the TEE report. So how do I know which is accurate. I have shortness of breath and fatigue. The shortness of breath is not all the time. I guess I’m struggling with the fact that the echos are different from the TEE. I SEE MY Cardiologist on Dec 7th to discuss how he wants to proceed. Does that seem normal for the echos to be off from TEE. Sorry, it’s my health I am concerned about, just confused. Thank you

I continually feel my heart pounding it is so bothersome that I don't sleep much and I have edema so bad and fatigued, plus hard time breathing going up stairs. She wants me on Metoprolal and that is it. I'm 58 and on Medicaid, I'm not sure if it's because of being on Medicaid as to why she isn't allowing surgery. My friend said he's willing to pay for it if that's the case.
