Hi everyone and welcome back to the channel, in this video I weld in a new closing panel on one of the GT Beetle's heater channels, its not a how to but you should be able to do this repair if you watch the video!
This is a really common area for rust and there are a few tricky parts involved in the repair, I took it slow and took a step by step approach. I was really happy with the end result!

Nice video! That's exactly why I bought the hookys a pillar repair and the alignment tool! You removed your closing panel exactly the same way I did, only I was outside on the concrete under the body! Lol, and then I decided to replace both of them anyway haha. You could have left paint on the lip of the channel where you plug welded to and uses a bur to clean up through the holes giving it a better chance of not rusting? Did you check the holes lined up on the new closing panel when attached to the channel? I'm thinking of welding channel in place then attaching closing panel to chassis then putting body down and then welding. Not sure yet. Probably the only way to guarantee they line up

I take it the hookys panel fit better? I didn't need to line up the bottom plate to the heater channel because I cut the channel out totally, I lined it up when welding the channel back in by bolting it to the pan first. If I left the heater channel on the car though, I would have bolted to closing panel to the pan, set the body on it and tacked it in place, lifted off the body then weld it all in

I read that the GT1600 Beetle was also made lighter by 100lbs...I wondered how?

Cool video! Please, forgive my dumbness. You actually fixed the old heater channel instead of buying a new one!

Yes, the closing panel is a cleap and easy repair and this is my own car so I didn't want to spend too much money, it would have been quicker to just replace the whole thing but this was the better option for me

@@classicandcustomrestoratio273, you saved a good amount of money. I bought a 1969 Beetle and I can see how it's easy to pile many dollars for materials. So, anything that can be fixed instead of replaced, is good.

@@classicandcustomrestoratio273, when you opened it up you scraped the "cover" where did you get the same part to put back?
