In this video I show you step by step how to replace your heater (control) valve on a 1997 Ford Ranger (v4, standard, 2.3L). This replacement process may be similar to other heater valves you may need to work on, so use this video as a general (loose) instructional guide. WHAT YOU WILL NEED: The replacement part (part no #74809 heater valve at auto zone), a gallon of 50/50 anti-freeze, a funnel, pliers, a flat head screwdriver, and an hour or so of time for the job. I did this on my '02 Ranger, which uses the same part, but is easier since it's right at the top.

Looks like I'll have to replace mine as well. Problem is I replace it twice before in the past 2 years. Maybe the plastic is super cheap, or something worse is going on....

I have to replace mine again. This will be the 3rd one in as many years. Always starts leaking from the vacuum plunger that opens and closes the valve... frustrating.

If I have a leak on the hose that leads to the engine do I loose the suction on my suction line? My ac won’t blow out of my regular vents just through the defrost as default i guess, maybe this loss of pressure is the cause of it? & if I do change said hose would there be any air bubbles in the system if I don’t leak it?

Where does that vacuum line go from the heater valve? I broke mine off and have no idea where it goes to.

It goes inside you’re cab under passenger feet

So when I run the heater on cold days I notice coolant hits the engine block creating a lot of steam and the engine runs hot. When I turn the heat off the engine temp returns to normal. Is that valve usually the cause of a problem like mine?

I cannot really give you a straight answer on that Parker. I would take it in and have it assessed. If they say it is the heater control valve then just DIY.

Yes it’s the heater control valve it leaks just replace it.

Hey bud I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XL and you absolutely have to take the entire - apart, steering column and everything your entire - is going to be sitting on your seat in order to reach the heater core it was a b**** of a job so I recommend watching a bunch of KZfaq videos cuz you're really going to get into it to get to that little bastard lol it was a nightmare

So why do these leak? Do they look through the screws? All the tubes seemed closed with clamps and dry. Anyone know about repairing it?

On mine the metal shaft wore out the soft cheap plastic they are molded from putting additional stress on the cheap seal causing leaks. The mainland is pleased to sell you a new one every year or two so I doubt they put any replacement seals on the boat. Even if the seal is replaced, the plastic will remain worn with larger than desired opening for the shaft. Maybe someone might find a higher quality seal to possibly make a repair last? It probably requires less energy to mold these soft cheap plastics so they don't need to import as much from their sanctioned ally. So a win-win?

@@fredwilliams8898 Thank you. I find your explanation laments and solutions useful and agreeable. I ended up putting a new part on but as you say I don't think it will hold up like the original. On that note I since learned one can find improved parts for the Ranger at a lower price then the dealer by searching for the a niche high speed romping off road after market suppliers. Seems they really like Rangers. Cool.

Why didn't you explain the hose that control the valve? You just call it "this little guy" lol. It's a vacuum hose that controls the valve when you turn your heat on or off inside the truck. Sometimes that's the broken part and you can actually pull the vacuum hose off, plug it and tape the valve in heat position for emergency heat u til you can replace the part.

I called it "this little guy" lol because I am no mechanic. I learn by doing and by help like you are giving me. Thanks for the info though, that is a good tip about emergency heat. I like that!

Hey bud what's that little cable called that you unplug from the heater valve? I need to find a replacement for it cuz mine is brittle and it snapped literally at turning the hard plastic over the years lol but I don't have it connected to the heater Val that you just replaced, I'm trying to figure out what it's called so I can order one or figure something out

You should be able to use just any kind of hose from a hardware store for that. Nothing special.

Why did you re-use the hose clamps? If they were original as the valve... They too should have been replaced! Those clamps are a "one time" use installed by the factory.
