Its a fucking sad state of affairs in the industry when somebodys doing 5 plates for dips + bodyweight over = 400lbs and not a single fuck is given. Yet if you were benching that, people would be bertstaring. Yet the dips for me a more "dangerous" exercise and the balance required through the wrist joint is insane. Back in the old days a handlebar moustached man would of given you a brisk handshake after this. And yet you dont even get a passing glance.

granny spinner personally I would rather be laying down on a bench with a spotter and 400 than relying on 2 little wrist joints to stabilize and support 400lbs. But that wasn't my argument good sir, both lifts are impressive! Its just a shame its not even recognised any longer and yet the old greats swore by the dip. (For the sake of clarity Im not saying this in a condescending or argumentitive way :). Good to talk shop!)

Last time I did this exercise was March 15th, 2017. It's been over 8 months of doing ZERO DIP TRAINING, yet I've maintained my strength. Previous best was 180x5 and 225x1, and that's when I was peaked to the max! Going to start doing these again and see how it carries over to bench.

AlphaDestiny WoW that must be very hard with all that added weight. I find that dips give my triceps a better workout than my chest. Is it supposed to work the chest more because I hardly feel my chest when I do dips. I feel it 80% on the triceps. So I don't do the exercise anymore as I want a bigger chest not bigger triceps.

mark it depends on hand positioning on bar width. the closer the range the ore triceps u work. Also it depends how u go down if u go down more straight ur hitting trieps but more bent is chest.

this is off-topic but about the novice program, which i probably will try out when my back injury is fixed, why is it that you do box squat, trapbar deadlifts, floor presses, etc instead of the conventional lifts? Is it because progression is easier in these movements because to me it seems more logical to do the lifts you want to get good at. If this question has been answered already, which i guess, point me in the right direction

Yo alex I'm doing stronglifts 5×5 with weighted chinups and dips added. Would this be enough exercise variation to eliminate imbalances? Also, I do BJJ and am worried about overly fatiguing or hurting my lower back while lifting and being out of practice and competition. Because of this, I've been doing trap bar deadlifts as I have never had a problem with form or lower back discomfort doing them. Will replacing the 1×5 deadlifts with 1×5 trap bar deadlifts still give me optimal results? Or will i need to ass something like hyperextensions as well?

Freddy Medina I know but it still sucks. Like I was going to try get a strong dip so by the time I could do like 5 bodyweight reps my sternum was dying in pain like it was going to rip apart. The thing is i was hitting depth like the perfect amount too so it's not like I was doing anything wrong.

@sgiuliana8
@sgiuliana8 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would stay to make sure you get a good foundation of strength with the bench press before switching to only dips. I had the worst sternum pain ever when I first wanted to do dips bc my bench was poverty. I moved my bench up to 225 for 5 and now even weighted dips don't hurt. Get a good foundation of strength first, practice good dip form with band assistance to take some weight off, and get strong sternum ligaments from accessory exercises like cable flies then I feel like its safe to replace bench press. This is all my experience btw.

I never benched in my life. Well, I did, and I think I stopped at 135 because I didn't like it nor did I feel any pump in my chest because of my long arms. Though, I'm REALLY strong at dips AND weighted dips and feel no pain whatsover. It actually feels great on my joints and shoulders. I really think I am dip-dominant, but have shitty leverages for bench press and can't stand it! Also, I train for gains, not for the big 3. I don't give a shit about the big 3.

Yo Alex I have recently observed a trend that I would like to know your thoughts on, So what I see a lot of the time in powerlifting is a lot of ipf lifters for example Ben Rice have a really minimalistic approach to their training, where as lifters who compete in untested federations for example Cailer Woolem, a lot of the time have a higher exercise selection and also they run a conjegute system a lot more often. Now I think this maybe be related to drug use, (I am not saying all ipf lifters are natural) where something like westside works a lot better for enhanced athletes then naturals. Now I know there are athletes who compete in untested federations who have a more minimalistic approach like Malanichev, but I cant think of a Ipf lifter who uses a conjugete system. Any way that was my rant. All feed back appreciated!
